Coaching rumors UPDATED: full-time ST (Webb), Wheatley at RBs (Balas)
Look for Michigan to hire an assistant that will coach special teams exclusively. No position
— Sam Webb (@SamWebb77) January 7, 2015
This is thread-worthy, I think, because I'm pretty sure that this is Sam's way of saying something without revealing the name of the person who is going to take the job...
EDIT: Balas seems to be indicating that Ty Wheatley is our new RB coach:
Tyrone Wheatley officially in as Michigan's RB coach? Sounds like it ($): https://t.co/6VzBjjy9BA

#1 job criteria: Count to 11.

Just use one of the mats where everyone stands on a number. No rocket science here.

is when some of the FG or punt team are also regulars on offense. For instance Dileo being the holder for the FG team. The same of course applies for the other side of the ball.

Call Cedar Point. Offer to buy up some of those gates with the numbers on the platform like they have for roller coasters. Everybody lines up on a number. When the gates open, take the field.

This was my exact thought as well . . . sigh.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:27 PM ^
Better idea: line them up in gates on the sidelines like it's Churchill Downs.

We had something like that for my community swim team when I was 6.
We would all stand over our lane assignments that were on the ground and then we would hold hands and walk to our lanes when our heat came up.

Swim lanes! I wonder if that's what Hackett had all the coaching candidates do. Harbaugh holding hands with Mullen who was holding hands with Miles, etc.

Go, therefore, and smite ye the Urbanites and the Dantonioavites, until they be dung upon the earth, yea, LAY THEM LOW.
So it shall be, evermore. Harbaughamen.

but you know.

I have it on good authority, Sesame Street characters do not count against our limit of 9 assistant and 2 graduate assistant coaches!

Is this common across college football?

Seems like a waste when Durkin is pretty good at ST. Harbaugh knows what he needs though so I trust him.
January 6th, 2015 at 7:44 PM ^
Not a waste at all, special teams is 20% of the game
January 6th, 2015 at 8:01 PM ^
I think this is a very good idea.
January 6th, 2015 at 8:04 PM ^
When was the last time we had good special teams? I know we've had some good punters, but I can't remember the last time we had everything put together.

2005 and 2006

I think Durkin is probably going to have his hands full just keeping an eye on the defense. Even though most of us feel like Durkin is an up and coming talent, he's still only been a DC for 2 years and this will be the first time that he'll be completely in charge of the defense (whereas Muschamp was undoubtedly heavily involved with the defense at Florida).
It would be fine to have someone at a position coach level in charge of special teams, but I dont think we want our head defensive guy spending his time anywhere else.

The kicking game has needed this

of being competent in all three phases of the game.

agree Beamer would be a good hire, though I'm not sure he'd accept the job. Unless it's maybe called a Special Teams Coordinator?? That way it's only one level down from head coach, but the upgrade in prestige and working with Harbaugh balances that out maybe?

The partial block of the Texas game winning field goal that still went through?
