Coaching rumors UPDATED: full-time ST (Webb), Wheatley at RBs (Balas)

Submitted by dnak438 on

Look for Michigan to hire an assistant that will coach special teams exclusively. No position

— Sam Webb (@SamWebb77) January 7, 2015

This is thread-worthy, I think, because I'm pretty sure that this is Sam's way of saying something without revealing the name of the person who is going to take the job...

EDIT: Balas seems to be indicating that Ty Wheatley is our new RB coach:

Tyrone Wheatley officially in as Michigan's RB coach? Sounds like it ($): https://t.co/6VzBjjy9BA

He blocked a punt.....and then likely was "coached up" to where he is now after. Consider that! His first game he blocks a punt and looked real speedy coming off that edge. Hair on fire. Then he spends the next 24 games in purgatory. How? I'll bet right now that he sees the field in a major way next year (maybe two ways or a position change). Either way, he was like the slightly poor mans Peppers of that entire recruiting class. I think both go ape shit next year if healthy.

You just wanted to brag again that you were at the game, huh?

haha

The ball came out funny, was barely long enough (from 37 yards out) and I remember watching it (and even after watching replays) thinking it was nicked on its way over the line.  I don't think ABC ever showed a side angle replay nor do I remember it from SportsCenter.

Did anyone ever ask Burgess (think it was him) if he got a piece of it?

I realize the playing TE is different than being a WR or OL. But why can't we just have the TE's work on blocking with the OL and catching/route running with the WR's?

I admit that I'm clueless on how most college programs set up their staffs.

Some schools do this where the TE will work with both groups and they dont have a specific coach. They also go with a certain group when they have meetings. The school I spent two years at ran the ball extensively and by that I mean 80% of the time we ran the ball. So us TE were in meetings with the O line and then when we were practicing we would run routes and work on open field blocking with the WR group. when you work on routes as a TE like this you usually run only the routes that the TE will run in the offense and from a position where your hand is down.

Have to imagine if Coach Harbaugh measures everyone's effort and posts results for all to see that some of the players will be rewarded with special teams time.  Will be great if special teams can win a game this year with a return for a TD or two.

5 star on rivals. He was a top 20 player who came down to FSU and us. After he committed to FSU he wanted to visit Michigan again but Brady Hoke had already passed up on him. I remember his recruiting I followed it closely. I would love to get him to play for us he really has a great upside. Also his main reason for keeping us in his final 2 was because of the close relationship his father and him had with Greg Mattison.

I like it. Special Teams to me is about getting the most electric players on the field. Some players really shine on STs and just have a knack for the ball. With Peppers, D. Thomas and Norfleet, somebody has to break out sooner or later.
