CC: Does OSU getting 4th seed help Michigan?

Submitted by jaggs on

Late to the party here, but didn't see it come up in the open thread.

With OSU jumping TCU and also staving off Baylor, does this show Patterson (and Briles I guess) that having 1 loss at a blue blood school will always trump their current schools and hamper their bids at getting to the NCG?? Could they see Michigan as an easier route to a title by being in a shittier conference and getting more credit for ending up at the top of that conference?

Could this help Patterson see the benefits of making a move to Michigan? Hopefully this is all moot once JH accepts the position, though Patterson could be the 2nd best option out there.

EDIT: Granted this is not enough to move the needle for Patterson to jump ship, however it does demonstrate the value of the big name programs right?

The vaulting of OSU over TCU and Baylor reflects two things:

1. The Big 12 screwed themselves over - there are other articles in USATODAY and elsewhere pointing out that the ADs of the Big 12 decided NOT to declare a definitive champ - perhaps because they were hoping to sneak in both teams or just because they like to split the title. Even though their league actually is a true all play play league so the head-up result should have trumped the equal records.

2. There is still a strong current of support for the Big Ten among the committee which were drawn from a wide swatch of CFB people - maybe it reflects true support in the strength of the league, maybe it is in recognition of the large fan bases and TV supporters, maybe they just thought OSU looked very good.

The latter can help UM in the long run - by long run - however many years it takes to see a good team (like about 7-9 years ago) - I hope that we'd get that sort of support. By then the tourney will probably be 8 teams.

Did Texas and Oklahoma being good last decade help Nebraska in the Big 12? Nope. If you have enough Colorados, Iowa States, Kansas's like we have Purdues, Rutgers's, Marylands, Indiana's, etc. it doesn't matter how good your # 1 team is. What we need is Iowa, Illinois, Northwestern, PSU etc. to step up and win 9-11 games to show that we have depth. That is way more important. The Buckeyes running away from the conference is probably the worst thing that can happen to us possible from recruiting to perceptions of us as a program to other things.

I had the same thought "OSU going to playoff helps UM" but for a completely different reason.

OSU played its best yesterday granted but it showed the massive gulf between the 2 teams.  If they had played like junk, lost or won close, and missed the playoffs I think a lot of people would still be in a dream world that UM and OSU right now are close on the field due to Hoke able to get his team up for the 1 game a year vs a real team.  So a close game would have allowed for the hire of an "Adazzio" type candidate.

So I think OSU looking like world beaters makes that fantasy go away and puts immense stress to hire a baller.  The Greg Schiano's of the world are going to make us BEST case into Wisconsin w/ better athletes.  So yesterday's game I suppose was good in offsetting the OSU-UM game the prior week where it looked like the 2 teams were within some sort of realm.  It was a rivalry game and a young OSU team...young teams go up and down a lot.  Next year they are going to be scary as pretty much the whole offense returns and other than 2 guys on the DL just abut the whole D.

You had to think there were a lot of big money donors watching that game going "fuck".  Meyer is just now truly getting his offense built and if we continue to respond to RPGs with a pistol we're going to be Minnesota.

I had mixed feelings watching that game because the gulf between the two programs may lead the best candidates to have second thoughts due to the massive rebuilding that will be required to make us competitive with them (which of course, is the standard here; we can't accept anything less).

I'm also fearful of an overreaction by the AD that may lead to a "quick fix" hire.  I view Patterson as a quick fix hire because while he brings an exciting offense, in reality, with the players we have now, it will require another 3-4 years before he gets his players first before we can run the system (which means we have the spread option, then the pro-style, then the air-raid).

We need a guy that can get the most out of the current players and then transition to what he wants to do.

It's proof that even in this new system, brand name programs are going to continue to receive the benefit of the doubt over programs with minimal name value.

Anytime OSU gets press or plays in a big game or bowl it hurts Michigan any way you try and analyze it. Wake up tattoo this isn't fantasy island! We're in a fucking long ass ride unless we can get a ass kicker in here to coach and tuff up these boys. Kills me to see them in the final 4 and I don't give a rats ass if the other Big12 coaches say oh now I will look at Michigan. If you think that's happening your as crazy as that little guy who rang the bell on that said show!

First and foremost, I don't foresee Patterson moving outside of some "can't refuse" offer, and even then I think he seems comfortable with this good thing he has going in the middle of a talent-saturated area. That being said, if the general question however pertains to OSU's presence in the CFB playoff still shining a light on a largely beleaguered Big Ten, then perhaps it does, but I don't foresee this as being the primary reason any coach would take the Michigan job.

Saw an interview on Sunday morning with Gary Patterson and he pretty much admitted that the college football climate being what it is, that TCU has to go undefeated to get considered for a slot in a 4 team playoff.  He also went on to comment on how a large portion of his team is returning next season and he thinks they have a good shot at going undefeated, so it didn't sound like the needle had moved for him to consider leaving TCU.

As long as the CFB playoffs are four team, yes, it helps (though painful) as there is a significant popularity contest component to getting invited. But once it goes eight team, which it will soon, then, no, it hurts us. So I guess my answer is short-term good, long-term bad. Anyway, it's more fun to root against Ohio. So that is reason enough. But the SEC solidarity has gone a long way in helping them build their monster conference.

...in recruiting, but will have little or no impact on the HC search.  Urban Meyer now has another big star to put on his bulletin board while we continue to fade like a burned out comet.  Ugh.

If a coach is considering an offer from UofM, they will pay little attention to OSU's accomplishment.  We already pale in comparison (when one looks at the last 10-15 years), which is all that matters, historically.

...will the results of the OSU-WI game finally convince some of the bloggers here that a Spread offense can be really good in the BIG and that a Manball offense might be considered a dinosaur?

For the life of me I'll never understand people that want Ohio State to go win championships to add gloss to our conference and rivalry...  It's ludicrous.  Look at how shitty we are and has our shittiness inhibited Ohio State from reaching their goals and reaching the play off?  No.

Further, Ohio State is our primary recruiting rival and people are talking about wanting them to win so we can take pride by proxy in our lousy conference?  Holy @#$@# why not just everyone go out and buy Buckeye paraphernalia to boot?

Ohio State beat a terrible Big Ten and lo and behold, it didn't impact their seeding at all.  If anything, the fact that everyone was terrible made it easier for them to win every week, including beating a way over-valued Wisconsin team that appeared good why?  Because they beat a bunch of teams in this same, bad conference.

The best thing for Michigan is for Ohio State to get embarrassed by Alabama, period.

Couldn't agree more. I take absolutely zero pride in the fact that OSU is doing well. If we burn, I want them to burn down with us. If we're good too, then I still want them to suck.

OSU has not been inhibited in the slightest by the fact that we and the rest of the Big Ten are just down right turrible. I still think they'll lose to Alabama (as we see in Big Ten basketball, there's something to be said for playing better competition week in and week out), but the fact of the matter is that OSU is getting recoginized on the national stage as an elite power, and we're struggling to stay out of the news for anything other than national embarrassments, blowouts, and firings.

So to answer your question, no, OSU being a 4th seed does not help us at all. It further cements OSU as the premiere program to be at in the Big Ten. If I was an unbiased top recruit, I don't know why in the hell I'd ever choose to go to Michigan right now. We're a program living in the past that seems to never be able to get out of its own way.

It TCU and Baylor played Saturday night, the winner would've gotten in over OSU.  This was a championship game issue and the Big 12 doesn't have one.  Most people still consider the B1G an overrated and underperforming conference so that perception has not changed.
