I'll take it and run. Go Blue!!!
We're going to be a tough tough team in March. It's going to be painful at times, but it will happen. A lot kids grew up some today.

This was an awful game, just awful. But Syracuse is a weird team in the 2-3 zone, one you don't see often. I'd love for Levert to take over this game more, as he didn't look like "the guy" today. Loved what I saw from Doyle, and Kam really had his best game of the year. Can Spike really be the guy going forward, even getting more minutes than Walton?
December 2nd, 2014 at 9:43 PM ^
Syracuse's zone is not normal. You don't "take over."
Burke and Stauskas didn't, neither did Levert. He passed the ball well, hit a few shots and got a ton of deflections. He will be fine.
Walton is the starter
You guys overreact to every game
December 2nd, 2014 at 9:48 PM ^
How anything I said was an overreaction. It was a simple reaction to the game, and a quite rational one. And while my Spike comment was more tongue-in-cheek, it's at least a question that can be asked after tonight. Yes Walton is still probably injured, but with Spike playing that way I don't see how you can take him off the court and get more minutes (like I said from the beginning).

Because UM was playing a 2-3 zone which 99% of teams do not play
Not a hard concept to grasp
It nullifies guys like LeVert and Walton who like to get to the rim. It is not something to apply to anything going forward.

Good learning experience, and the team will continue to get better.

But we kept choking on our FT to give them the possessions they turned it over on.
December 2nd, 2014 at 9:35 PM ^
Final stats
Cuse 50% FG, 35% 3 pt
UM 38.5% FG 33.3% 3 pt
36-31 rebounds Cuse
19-13 assists UM
19 turnovers Cuse, 7 UM
last line item won the game. Cuse shot out of their mind.

Michigan also went 3-17 on 3s in the first half and our big 3 barely showed up. Spike n Doyle got us out of this one.

Kam better but still not super good at 4-11. Rebounding was excellent with 9.
Doyle super efficient with 12 pts at 4-6 shooting 6 rebounds
Caris and Walton not good tonight
Irvin 18, on 7-17
Spike out of his mind
8 man bench including weird guys.
December 2nd, 2014 at 9:40 PM ^
KenPom was right again!
A work in progress, but happy with a win over a team that, like Michigan, may be one to watch out for next spring.
December 2nd, 2014 at 9:42 PM ^
because of their zone. Even their freshmen play it smart.
Boeheim pegged Chatman to beat them. Coach B got him out, then switched away from that hi-lo 3-out offense with Caris at the foul line and went to his preferred 4-out. Spike's penetration and dishing opened them up just enough.
Nice to not waste energy with all the baseline movement and off-ball switching against that zone - just a little flare screen now and then from the 5.
Little too tense at the end. Man do we ever not box out. Doyle has to stop going down like he's shot EVERY time someone penetrates. But hey, we made our possessions count more in that last 10 minutes.
Good to win while still having a lot of work to do.
December 2nd, 2014 at 9:43 PM ^
Syracuse so desparately needs a point guard. Lot of talent over there and that zone is nasty like usual. Thought we played OK offensively. A lot of open jumpers didn't fall. We really need the non-Doyle bigs to be able to finish in traffic near the rim though.
Defensively, Doyle was the only one who could do anything with Christmas and even he couldn't manage much. But we forced a good number of turnovers and got a few more fortuitously. That game was a bad sign for games against Kaminsky and maybe Dawson, but the Big Ten doesn't have a ton of offenses that go through the post. Maybe good Hammons could kick our ass, but he's inconsistent to say the least so I'm not goint to worry too much.
Overall, I bet this win looks a lot better in February and March. Boeheim's a good coach, he'll get everything together. I assume we lose to Arizona and then we're right on track with my general expectations, which were lose to Nova/Zona, beat Cuse and be in fairly good shape overall.
December 2nd, 2014 at 9:45 PM ^
Very nice. Iots to like and lots of teachable moments in a win. We're 6-1 with that loss coming to a good team on a "neutral" court and one where we could have won the game.
This has the feel of Burke and the three point shot. He kept missing and then finally made it when it really counted; the problem is these of of game FTs can really hurt us with a lot more frequency but I have a feeling they will improve there.
Don't worry be happy.

hideous at the end, but I don't care.
Great to get that win under our belt with what we have coming up.
Wish we would foul with 2.2 on the clock up 3. Personally, I think that's a no brainer in that spot.
Poor Walton was really limited with his lateral movement.
Hope he can heal up before Big Ten season.

think it's really the clear move with about 3.5 to 4 left and shouldn't be a question under 3. Wish we would adapt. How many times must it happen?
Again, I am a *huge* fan of our staff, just think this is one where they need to change their thinking.

i predict this is a pretty good win for our resume at the end of the year.
nice to see kam get a little more involved in the game. dont see him taking over any games this year, but he should become a factor at some point.

Good win though ! Spike and Doyle were awesome!
December 3rd, 2014 at 12:04 AM ^
The only independent division 1 team!
They almost beat Marquette and did beat Duquesne, so they aren't awful.

They just blew the call.
A number of us were swearing about it up in the thread when it happened.
It was a terrible job of refereeing to miss that.
And Syracuse got rewarded with a 5 on 4 because Irvin was injured and got an and one on the play.
It was garbage.

on the FT miss right before Syracuse turned it over in the backcourt.
He fouls going for the offensive rebound there and we're in trouble.
Good discipline by a true freshman.
