Hoke meeting with Hackett at noon

Submitted by redsoxaa on

According to Feldman, the meeting is taking place at noon.  Hopefully the news will leak soon after and the blog can get in a few productive hours of work today.

On a side note listening to Mark and Rico show John U Bacon says he feels 98% sure that LesMiles will come to Michigan if JH stays in NFL..he also thinks that Hackett's first choice is def JH and will be pursuing him first.

I agree, if you're good at this process you don't do this right unless those conversations have at least begun.

On the other hand, who has information that Hackett is doing this the best way? It's possible that he wouldn't want to make those calls until he has terminated the prior coach. An argument can be made that he wouldn't want anything to get back to Hoke without an uprfont, man-to-man discussion of Hoke's future.

Until yesterday, JUB qualified all of his statements with the equivalent of "this is just wild ass speculation, and I am speculating from no knowledge at all" or some such similar language to indicate that he was not providing inside information.

On SportsCenter last night, JUB said that he would lay the odds at 51% Harbaugh, 25% Miles and 24% someone else, but in so saying, he did not provide any type of disclaimer regarding speculation vs information.

Did he offer and disclaimer on his statements on Mark and Rico?

No matter who the coach is next year (including Hoke) I hope we can give them and the players our support.

I feel sorry for the players first, students and alums second, fans third, Hoke's staff fourth, and Hoke himself fifth.

I wish it would've worked, but at the end of the day, Brady accepted this responsibility, and he simply wasn't good enough.  It's too bad for him, but it was his own doing.  He had all the support in the world and fantastic recruiting classes (something his predecessor didn't) and still his teams got worse every year.

Yes, the team was very young, but the great coaches show progression, not regression.  And like Bob Thornbladh said on Sunday, Bo used to say that young teams that lose usually turn into older teams that lose (under the same regime).

I will say this: at least he left the cupboard stocked.

Lastly, the reason I feel bad for the assistants (or at least the ones who did an excellent job) is that they had no control over their fate (save Nussmeier, Mattison, and maybe Funk).  Guys like Hecklinkski may have done an amazing job, yet are now on the coaching bread line.

Going forward, it cannot be underestimated how important having great position coaches is.  The game is about fundamentals, as these are the people tasked with coaching them.

Some guys need more than 4 years--Mullen has only reached 10 wins after 6 years. But at a place like Michigan, you don't get 6 years. And I think most elite coaches only need 3 or 4. Meyer tends to win right away. Harbaugh, Dantonio and Beliema all won 10+ in year 4 at Stanford/MSU/Wisconsin. Lloyd went undefeated in year 3, Tressel in year 2, etc.

So does it make sense that there is no official press conference scheduled? If the department has made known that there are two meetings, they want the fans and public to know that decisions have been made one way or the other. How is the information expected to get out if there's no press conference? That's kind of a rhetorical question, but still.....how?

Good question. Can't they call one later? You probably dont call a press conference to announce you are retaining the current coach. You release a statement. You do call a press conference if you are firing the coach. So calling one would basically pre-announce the decision.

you might not call a press conference to announce you're keeping a coach (unless there is a major contract change). The current circumstances are far from normal. Whiile I think, based on the timing of the announcement, Hoke is probably gone, I wouldn't read to much into them calling a presser to announce the decision.

I'm in this camp with a slightly different angle.  Think about all of the players that have squandered their playing time not getting better?  With his recruiting profile, DG probably expected to be an NFL QB.  I don't think any of us can see a situation where that happens.  All of the OL that have been recruited by Hoke and have not developed as one would expect.

Hoke and his assistants will likely get another chance to coach elsewhere, but the players only get once chance to play college football and have the success and development they dreamed about, and it has almost all been wasted.

I'm sure that Hoke is feeling awful and I don't wish that upon him, but I feel much worse for the opportunity cost that has been borne by his 115 sons for Hoke's incompetence.

I can't decide if it's something I want to hear, especially if he were to turn it down. This kind of thing is a very double edged sword. And the person I got if from admittedly had no solid source other than "from a guy who's brother knows someone who etc., etc.". He's had decent info before but he couldn't confirm it 100%. Just wanted to see if others in the area may have gotten similar info.

I am not a fan of Brady Hoke either, but this has to be a horrible time for the guy. He had his dream come true and then it blew up in his face. I feel for him right now, knowing this is probably the last day he's the head coach of his alma mater.

If Michigan wants to continue their long tradition, this move has to take place. Brady seems like a great guy but he just couldn't increase the number being placed in the wins column.

This is what organizations have to do to stay competitive when the winning formula isn't already in place. Auburn fired their DC a year removed from the NCG & Nebraska fired Pelini despite the fact that he won quite consistently.

Now it's our turn to get this right and swing for the fences. Whether it's JH or Miles or someone else. Just go get the best possible coach we can get.
