OT: NYT Reports - For FSU Player, Hit-and-Run Becomes Traffic Ticket
At least this time, it's not Jameis Winston -- just starting cornerback, PJ Williams. Two cars totaled on 10/5 and Williams, driving on a suspended license, flees into the darkness although he comes back later. Also in the car: another FSU cornerback.
Police did not test for alcohol, etc. Campus police intruded even though not in their jurisdiction.

or watch extra film.
The punishment should match whatever aligns best to help the football team win.
November 14th, 2014 at 2:03 PM ^
Probably will have to sit out a series too.
November 14th, 2014 at 6:09 PM ^
the laws matter...if it were you or me, our asses would be in jail, and charged appropriately.
The players are above the law, and the Tallahassee PD and FSU make that perfectly clear. It's right in your face. They are under the spotlight, yet they still don't give a flying fuck. They will do what they want to.
No wonder players think rules do not apply to them. They don't.

that is really fishy - Other driver on his way home from work, at Olive Garden, at 2:30 AM? Does not add up. The NCAA can launch an investigation into FSU, but ijohnb is going to launch an investigation into that guy. i will get to the bottom of this and report back.
November 14th, 2014 at 2:07 PM ^
I've got a buddy who is a pilot in the Navy. He has talked about living in some rough southern towns where the Olive Garden is the number one hotspot for getting after it.
November 14th, 2014 at 2:19 PM ^
the OG? It is plainly the hot spot for eating so much garlic, salt, and starch that you wake up at 3:00 AM with severe dry mouth and heart burn. Like getting after it in that way?
November 14th, 2014 at 2:28 PM ^
i really hope so b/c that is hot
November 14th, 2014 at 2:45 PM ^
I was with him at an OG in rural Ohio once after a long drive. We had just checked into a hotel and needed a late dinner. I assumed the OG would be closed. He was confident it wouldn't be. I'm guessing it was around 11. We went, and they were open and fairly busy. He was hoping the ladies would start showing up at any time. They did not.
November 14th, 2014 at 3:38 PM ^
I hear they don't need ladies there

Those jackasses call themselves "aviators." (I keeed, I keeeed....I actually spent one assignment flying with the Navy - very professional flyers. I loved working with them.)
November 14th, 2014 at 4:32 PM ^
It makes sense it'd be a hotspot for getting after it in the south. After all, when you're there you're family.
November 14th, 2014 at 2:18 PM ^
What doesn't add up? The guy leaving work at the Olive Garden at 2:30am? That is normal if you've ever worked in a restaurant that serves booze. You close up no earlier than midnite then clean the joint for the next day. Getting out at 2:30 is perfectly cromulent.
November 14th, 2014 at 2:22 PM ^
you mean "night" but whatever. And I served at the Garden for two years. You close up shop at midnight (at the latest, many locations it is 11 PM even on the weekends) fill a salt shaker, bissel 12 feet of carpet and you are out of that joint. 12:40 AM would be like the worst possible scenario.
November 14th, 2014 at 3:02 PM ^
Hmmm, well I never worked at an OG but everyplace I did work we would need a couple hours to clean the kitchen and dining rooms top to bottom before we left. So, to me leaving at 2:30 doesn't seem that strange. Also, I was never a server but rather a busboy or dishdog. That might be why I was stuck staying late.
November 14th, 2014 at 3:05 PM ^
What do you guys keep referring to with "OG"? Original Gansta?
So confused...

Mmmmm...beer (Homer Voice)
November 14th, 2014 at 6:34 PM ^
It doesn't matter where the guy was coming from.
That doesn't change the fact that this person hit his car, ran away, and the police did nothing about it.
November 14th, 2014 at 6:54 PM ^
Maybe they were open late b/c they had to make a special crab leg run for Jameis Winston?
November 14th, 2014 at 2:08 PM ^
Is this the job of the local newspaper, in this case The Tallahassee Democrat?, who at this moment has an article at the top of its website, "'Eggplant' more than a vegetable at FSU". http://www.tallahassee.com/
Our local papers would be killing each other to get out in front of this story, and in this case, I'd applaud them. Same country, different world.
November 14th, 2014 at 2:10 PM ^
Reminds me of Spurrier's "Free Shoes University" crack back in the day. Pretty obvious that everyone from Fisher to any and all law enforcement agencies in the area are highly dedicated and committed to making sure that none of the players get in any trouble whatsoever no matter what they do.
For those that hate the NCAA, it's also pretty funny that these are the defending national champions, possibly heading for a repeat. Not only does that mean every story like this gets huge publicity, but it further highlights the impotence of the NCAA to so much as lay a glove on this obviously out of control program.
November 14th, 2014 at 4:38 PM ^
And the dept of Ed will be interested in Winston
November 14th, 2014 at 2:11 PM ^
This is starting to sound like Oklahoma and Barry Switzer
November 14th, 2014 at 2:12 PM ^
Yet, a university spokesman said all they wanted was an after-hours phone number for a football coach to tell him two of his athletes had been in an accident; campus police could not locate a phone number.
There isn't a readily available hotline number to report potential problems with players to the FSU football staff? You would think that by now they would have at least employed some sort of paging system whereby Fisher and his assistants are notified of issues. Florida State is behind the ball yet again.
This is just bizarre on a lot of levels, and I would love to hear the explanation of how you "unknowingly" drive with a suspended license. That has to be a fascinating story unto itself.
November 14th, 2014 at 2:15 PM ^
Not the only school this happens at. FSU seems to have been particularly bad of late, but I don't know if they're just under the microscope because of Winston.
Similar thing happened at MSU--cops were supposed to be cool, then couldn't take it anymore--and that set off the chain of events that led to Smoker's dismissal.
MSU isn't the only school in the Big Ten where that happens.
Everywhere.

conscious. I think if this kind of thing was going on most other places, and the microscope was on because of unethical funny stuff with a police department, AND a university security/police dept., they would start caring how it looks.
FSU just doesn't even care...or so it seems.
I think they'd flip us all off, but they don't even care enough.

You can win on the field without losing off it. FSU is winning with a bunch of hooligans who can't stay out of trouble. Beilein is a great example of the fact that you can win games and do it right. I don't want our football program to look like Jimbo's, I want it to look like Beileins
November 14th, 2014 at 6:54 PM ^
Up voted for hooligans. You just can't use that word often enough for me.

in like february after they play for the NC and winston is no longer enrolled in the school
Admins are going to say how tough they are, and how they don't accept this sort of thing
he will get suspsended by FSU for 6 games and it will carry into the NFL a la T. Pryor
but it won't matter b/c he won't start his rookie year anyway - he will fall in the draft b/c of his past issues
his past issues will come back to haunt him a la Josh Freeman at Tampa bay
he will bust out of the NFL by the year 2018 and be in debt for the rest of his life
true story - a gypsy told me all of this in a bathroom stall at an olive garden

Exactly, as unethical as it may be, to save your ass if you're driving when above the limit, it's best to flee and go to a bar and take a few shots immediately. Better to get a hit and run than a DUI. Although, I also don't condone this, it's pretty clever.
November 14th, 2014 at 2:57 PM ^
still get charged with a OWI, there would just not be admissible breathalyzer evidence. But there does not need to be as long as the person is "visibly impaired." The breath test is like DNA evidence, it is not necessary to charge and convict. If numerous witnesses see your drunk ass running to a bar, zig zagging and shit, you can be charged with it.

I don't fucking drive when I'm drunk.
I know you're not condoning it, but I don't like the mixed message even so--don't kill people, don't go to prison: call a cab.

The Jameis sexual assault thing is one thing, but this is another. As appalling as it is, sexual assault cases can often get muddled and set to the side just because of the whole "he said, she said" nature of it, as well as the victims unfortunately all too often not pursuing it as much as they should (for various reasons I can emphasize with but not fully condone). However, when you have a clear as "day" hit and run accident at night, with a potentially out of jurisdiction group called into handle it, PLUS no BAC test done (which is pretty damn standard for accidents after dark), it becomes pretty crystal clear what's going on there and also essentially confirms what we all thought about the Jameis situation.
This is more than an FSU football issue, this a blatantly obvious corruption/colluison issue down in Tallahassee.

This is kind of like the stolen moped story. The FSU player is on a stolen moped, gets pulled over and tells the officer he borrowed it from a guy but doesn't remember his name, then calls him "Drew". Drew is not the name of the person who reported it stolen, but the officer lets him go. The reasoning was that the story sounded believable and people involved in these kind of incidents are never calm and cooperative like this guy was.
Later the police tried to convince the owner not to press charges, saying that maybe he did let him borrow it and forgot, before flat out saying to let it go because he plays football and his career could be ruined.
November 14th, 2014 at 4:07 PM ^
the TPD's blatant disregard for laws when it comes to football players is unreal. Like it's admirable the lengths as to which this police department will take bad publicity just to keep these idiotic football players out of jail or trouble.
