What's the next step we can take re: getting rid of Brandon?

Submitted by Erik_in_Dayton on

I just had the chance to digest Brian's description in today's UV of Sam Webb's post saying he thinks Brandon will survive long enough to possibly keep Coach Hoke.  It reminds me that I would like next season to not feel like someone is pulling out my teeth with a pair of pliers.

What can those of us who want Brandon fired do that we haven't done already?  People have mentioned creating "Support the Team/Fire Brandon" tee shirts.  That sounds okay, though I'm personally not in a good position to make that happen for people who live in AA.  It wouldn't be the most powerful thing, I assume, but I like the idea of those shirts showing up on TV in shots of the crowd during games.

Does anyone have any other ideas?  Or has the message been sent, and are we now at the mercy of President Schlissel?

should Michigan qualify for a Bowl game the students and fans will not attend.

A movement in that direction will not only get the attention of University Administration but Bowl committees and national press.

I would like to win against MSU, and beat Ohio, and be victorious in a bowl game, then celebrate by sending Der Schlockmeister and Uncle Hoke far, far away.

If DB brings back Vince Lombardi and Hoke wins the Super Bowl, they still are incompetent nincompoops.  They smell like losers.  We need a fresh start.

IDK. I'm in NY and could send a letter I guess, but I don't think there is much we can expect the U to do at this point. They have clearly heard the message. It's just a matter of time now. I just hope that the timing doesn't affect a new coach search.

The craziest thing to do would be to keep Hoke on for another year- with no extension. I mean, it would be 10 more months of shit and an uphill recruiting climb for 2016 to say the least. Maybe he could turn around and win the 1st 7 games next year to undo the previous 20 months, but LOL I CAN"T EVEN FINISH THAT

That was supposed to be this year. Everyone thought this was the year we were going to be able to do that. Now we push it back another year, then another year...10-2 ain't happening again with Hoke as HC. The players we have will continue failing to progress in any meaningful way and we will flounder yet again. This staff is simply terrible (with a couple notable exceptions).

Actually, it was next year that we were supposed to be able to do that.  I don't think it was ever realistic to go 10-2 this year, with the three marquee games on the road, and with a young O-line under a new offensive coordinator.

To add to that, we've had more injuries than any of us could have imagined.

To add to that, we have one of the worst turnover margins in the country.

You can blame all of that on the coaches if you want, I know that's the popular thing to do right now, but it's very short sighted.  Next year should be a very good year from Michigan Football.  I"m not sure who will be coaching the team, but I'd be very surprised if they don't win at least 9 games (I guess that assumes we don't have mass attrition from a coaching change -- which I don't expect).

Schlissel is doing The Process. What's frightening is that I heard the exact same thing Webb said from a friend who's close to the situation. The president knows people are upset, but he's going to examine the program himself, with the advice of the Regents. He's a smart guy and we hired him for a reason. He's not going to go based on gut feeling.

At the end of the day, you have to hope that Schlissel hires an AD that can line up a known commodity to coach (a Harbaugh, Les Miles pretty being it). If none of those guys wants to coach Michigan, we're probably going to have Hoke one more season, which is kind of unfathomable. It reminds me of Washington keeping Ty Willingham that extra year.

Unless Schlssel changes his mind and speeds up, we're probably looking at firing Brandon in December, hiring a new AD in the middle of January, and possibly hiring a new coach at the end of January early February at best. Brandon's a powerful dude, he's going to drag it out as long as he can and try to survive.

If we wait that long to hire a new AD and football coach, unless you get a Harbaugh level coach that kids will just flock to in the final 2-3 weeks before NSD, there will be no recruiting class to speak of. All but maybe 2-3 guys could jump ship, and no one wants to come here when they don't know what coach there is or what scheme they will be playing under. You think the void left by the departed 2010 class was bad? This could be a whole lot worse. I just don't see us taking that long to institute change.

Even if DB survives, I can't envision Hoke lasting long past the OSU game. DB would see the importance of getting a head start on finding a new man. Not to mention the fact that he would literally be run out of town if he even thinks about retaining Hoke.

n a universe where the AD isn't a complete asshat and we wouldn't be worried about getting him out, Hoke stays until 12/1 when the PC is announced that he's "resigning *winkwink* " and that M will be conducting a thorough search beginning today (12/1).

In a universe where the shit hit the fan prior to sept, the AD gets canned last spring or summer, M hires the new AD then. Hoke drives the goddammed bus over the clif and he get's canned 12/1 (or even mid season with the Morris fiasco or losing the team).

Either of the above is typical, of course, but due to the timing of everything hitting the fan in Sept, M is screwed. I think what will happen is that Brandon holds on for dear life and let go at some point b/t 12/1 and 12/15. Either way, I think Hoke stays on due to this timing:

  • If Brandon gets let go prior to 12/1, there is no one to fire Hoke, in a way. The interim guy/gal could do it, but in reality you want the new AD to make such a decision.
  • If DB gets shitcanned after 12/1, M will need time to find the next guy and get him/her in, evaluated the situation and look for available coaches-

Either way it means a new coach is likely hired after the new year, probably around 1/15/15. Now, this may not seem like great news, but given the fact that the Harbaughs are NFL coaches, they may not be available until then anyway and the timeing could serendipitous (<--- holy shit I spelled that right). Best case, IMO:

  1. Hoke doesn't lose the team, may squeek out a bowl, maybe not (not really important at this point considering the big picture). Team seems mildly compeditive for 1/2 to most of the game time at OSU, MSU. Probably beat 1 or 2 out of IU, NW, Maryland, all compeditive tho.
  2. Brandon is let go 12/1 (monday after OSU game); the people rejoice. However, everyone wants to get rid of Hoke b/c obvs, but we have an AD seasch to complete 1st.
  3. New AD announced before Xmas (I'm assuming "feelers" have alread been extended as we speak) - a fast process to be sure. New candidate likely has M ties as has been discussed.
  4. Hoke fired AND New HC announced 1/15, at same PC. It's not Mullen b/c UF scoops him up prior to bowl season.  But it could be a Harbaugh b/c the timing lines up with the Reg season ending and coaches shuffling b/t 12/28 and 1/15 or so. Weird to have a joint PC, but the timing and the "Michigan way" of not firing a coach/having a "smooth transition" make it look like a thoughtful, competent process (for lack of a better word).

A lot of this will depend on the new AD being up to speed on the disaster that is the football team, but given the likely candidates, I don't think that will be a problem. Items 1-100 on the new ADs to-do list will be related to the coaching search for football. But, if the person is competent and familiar with the situation (again, I think exploratory convos are already happening via unoffical friends of the U and the potentails ADs), this is doable. Likely, the new HC will be named before the AD can even get his name plate and family pics on his/her desk.

The alternative is either A) keeping Hoke on for 2015 which is COMPLETELY INSANE for 2 reasons: 1) Hoke has no contract after 2015 and 2) WTF DO I EVEN NEED TO SAY IT?

or B) canning Hoke in Dec without an AD. I guess this could happen, but IDK how the potential AD candidates would appreciate that and then you essentially have no HC and no AD- I mean, that's a rudderless ship if I've ever seen one.

Brandon fired Monday after OSU. Bates hired middle of December because he impresses Schlissel. Hoke fired first week of January, Harbaugh hired because Bates is close with Harbaughs.

From what I've been told, it seems like it'd have to be a Harbaugh for us to get rid of Hoke because the timing for a real search just isn't there under the current timeframe. Of course, things can change quickly.

Sadly I don't think there is anything anyone can do that they wouldn't have done otherwise -ie: not attending games.
As long as the stadium is filled and with it, the athletic department coffers

Last year's team was primed for an upset and came 1 point short at home... This year's team on the road?

Ugh I just don't see it.

* Find out which of the Regents, other then Andrea Fischer Newman, support Brandon, and vote them out of office in a few weeks.

* Cut back on financial donations to the University, and make them fully aware of why you are doing so.

* Create a real boycott of the Maryland game that would send a message to the Administration that the status quo will not be tolerated, and to expect more of the same if the same people are retained next year.

Look, I really love this football program, and I don't want anything to hurt the University, the program, or the kids, but I truly believe that the only way that things can ever get better is to fire the people who are in charge now, and bring in the best candidates to fill those positions and be successful, and because people are so utterly resistant to change, sometimes drastic measures must be taken for the good of the majority.

Eliminating donations to the Athletic Department is a great start.  I'm sure they review monthly, their plan vs budget.

HOWEVER, how about also:  Don't buy Michigan licensed products for a while.  I'm sure not purchasing a new jersey and hat, or new t-shirt and man-cave banners will begin to hit our suppliers like Adidas and others in the coming months, and they along with the lack of licensing fees to the department, will start to be noticed.
