Jay Feely to workout for the Lions on Tuesday
The Lions cut kicker Alex Henery on Monday, two weeks after signing him to replace Nate Freese. Henery was 1-of-5 on field goals, including three misses Sunday. Combined, Freese and Henery are 4-of-12 this season.
Jay Feely is flying to Detroit on Monday and is scheduled to to work out for the Liions on Tuesday.
Good luck to Jay.

Prater was previously signed by the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent on May 4, 2006. He made field goals of 22, 44 and 48 yards in a preseason game against the Cleveland Browns, but had little chance of beating out veteran incumbent Jason Hanson and was subsequently released August 27.

Hurray former Michigan guys and all, but Matt Prater plz.
October 6th, 2014 at 1:38 PM ^
The only concern with Prater is he'll get a 1 year suspension if he gets in trouble with the NFL again. It's risky. Plus, he's probably more expensive.
October 6th, 2014 at 1:44 PM ^
Two scenarios:
- Prater messes up, is suspended for a year and Detroit finds someone else. Decent kickers are always available.
- Prater stays clean and is a (most likely) great kicker for the Lions for many years.
Either way, IMO, he's the best choice for right now.

About that "decent kickers are always available" thing...
October 6th, 2014 at 1:49 PM ^
How about this: if Prater doesn't work out, Jay Feely will probably still be available.
October 6th, 2014 at 1:48 PM ^
The cost will be up to the front office to figure out, I have no idea if he fits under the cap or not. Probably will next year when a zillion dollars come off the books though. As for the potential for suspension, well, what's the worst that can happen, we go back to the kicker pool again?

Not having a good kicker cost the Lions the game yesterday. If they don't find someone fast it's going to cost more games. It's hard to believe Henery was the best guy they could find. He looked horrible on that last kick.

What's weird is that Henry was automatic in college, in fact I think he's a record holder at Nebraska. Why he's failed to hard in the NFL is a totaly mystery.
October 6th, 2014 at 2:21 PM ^
So was Freese. There is a huge difference between a great college kicker and a decent pro kicker.
Watching any college kicker line up for 30+ yard kick is always stressful. But when a pro kicker lines up for any field goal under 45 yards you might as well go piss and get another beer. It's good.

should be automatic
October 6th, 2014 at 3:37 PM ^
Thing is - Henery was actually good in the pros before getting to the Lions.
He was 86% on his career (Feely is about 83%) prior to this season.
October 6th, 2014 at 3:11 PM ^
Henery was actually decent with the Eagles. They just found a rookie kicker they like better, and who's been doing very well. That's partly why I'm so damn disappointed in the Buffalo game: by all accounts Henery should've been a signing that worked out just fine.
October 6th, 2014 at 3:14 PM ^
Eagles fans all said that he was horrible last season.
October 6th, 2014 at 3:24 PM ^
Eagles fans think Santa Claus is horrible. Excluding this shitty two-game display Henery was 86% in three years with Philly. Jason Hanson was 82% for his career and I love me some Jason Hanson. I'd take 86%.

isn't Feely a financial advisor?
October 6th, 2014 at 1:37 PM ^
Can Hanson just come out of retirement and kick for life?
October 6th, 2014 at 1:39 PM ^
I love me some Jay Feely, but sorry, Matt Prater is the only logical option. When one of the most accurate kickers in the history of the game who also owns the longest kick of all-time falls right into your lap due to a shocking move by his current team, that is a no brainer.
October 6th, 2014 at 1:39 PM ^
I cant believe that Jay Feely had such a good career and is still a viable option at this age...but he is and good for him.
Did they try to call Jason Hanson out of retirement? Id bet he can still kick it accurately
October 6th, 2014 at 1:53 PM ^
It's remarkable that anyone lasts until 38 (I believe that's Feely's age) in the NFL really, but it isn't at all uncommon for kickers, I would think. Someone wrote an article - perhaps last year, so thet data might be different now - that about half of the kickers starting in the NFL were over 30 years old and that the average length of service and retirement age for that position was also the highest.

It might be a bad idea to sign a FG kicker that somehow gets the ball to fly through the air sideways and instead of tumbling end-over-end like it should, the ball looks like a damn helicopter out there. Seriously, what did the Lions see in that guy that told them "this guy will solve all our FG issues!"
October 6th, 2014 at 1:43 PM ^
The guy they actually wanted (Brionas) died before they could sign him.
October 6th, 2014 at 2:27 PM ^
What a bizarre story.
Bironas tries out for the Lions.
Lions decide to stick with their current kicker for the time being.
Bironas decides to get wasted and drive, maybe because he didn't get the Lions job? Ends up dying.
Lions kicker melts down in week 2 and gets cut. Lions probably would have signed Bironas if he had just stayed alive for about 48 more hours. Then maybe he doesn't feel the need to go get wasted and drive.
Whole thing is just bizarre/stupid.

Kickalicious.
That is all.
October 6th, 2014 at 1:46 PM ^
Apparently he's super accurate, but can't get the kicks off fast enough. So when he's up against a defense, he gets blocked.

They need KICKALICIOUS. If they don't bring him in then I see sutipidity
The guy was 3/3 for the Lions and hit a 50 yarder (among other stuff)

October 6th, 2014 at 2:28 PM ^
if Feeley would get a call.
Prater is really the only logical choice unless the Lions feel he's a ticking time bomb. Dude is an All-Pro kicker if he can stay sober. Feeley is really good but he is a notch below Prater.

Yesterday was pathetic. The Lions GAVE that game away. Typical Lions. Here's hoping Jay can come in and be an asset.
October 6th, 2014 at 3:42 PM ^
Good for him.
