Rate your embarrassment level (1-10) by each individual fiasco

The Horror      -  9

Toledo '08         -9

Stretchgate      - 8

Cokegate       - 10

This soft drink promo is the stuff of low A minor league baseball.  As much as the stench of The Horror will never fade, stooping to this level to entice fans back to the game this weekend has irretreviably harmed the Block M.

I guess Brandon has succeeded in creating the future - and bad pub is better than no pub at all.

I'm way late to the party with the Coke gate thing, but isn't that a Coke fuck up, not a Michigan fuck up? They bought a block of tickets from the AD. If Coke gave them away inadvertantly isn't that on Coke? Maybe I'm not understanding something here.

perception has become "reality" to the rest of the sports world.  Sure, WE might "know" that Coke obtained those tickets and made the idiotic decision to use them to sell a few more 2-liter bottles, but the big mistake the athletic department made was to not attach some strong strings to how those tickets were to be handled.

Now it's too late, as once the proverbial "Pandora's Box" is opended, you can't ever close it to undo the damage.  While I have no doubt the buffoonery happened at some level beneath Brandon, ultimately it is Brandon's responsibility that safeguards are in place to protect the Michigan image.

Not going to lie, I was there (drove nine hours from TN for the weekend), and I was embarrassed walking out. The whole afternoon felt like we had loss. It was just as bad as 2008 Toledo to me.

I should be doing work right now, but I'll bite:

The Horror - Easily a 10, and it always will be. Nothing this team does, now or in the future, will ever erase the stench of that loss. ESPN will always talk about it, and opposing rivals will never let you forget it. In many ways, it set this program back several years, and we're still feeling the ramifications from it. While many say Michigan's downfall started after we lost to OSU back in '06, I think this was really the begin of our plummet.

Toledo '08 - Maybe its higher for others, but I'll leave it at an 8. We all knew we weren't going to be good that year, but it was losing to a MAC team for the first time in program history, so that's pretty darn bad. Still, a lot of outsiders don't remember this one like they remember the Horror. I more remember losing to MSU for the first time in what felt like forever, and getting seal-clubbed by OSU.

Stretchgate - For me, its a 9. I didn't fully understand what was going on at the time, admittedly, but what pisses me off about it is that there was so much momentum going into that season, and the Freep had to go on a witch hunt. Deceiving players into giving incriminating quotes that were presented way out of context is just despicable. I'm embarrassed about it, but not for our players, nor even the coaches. I'm just embarrassed that journalists would sink so low as to try and sabotage a program like that, all for a story. I'd love to see Brian and Snyder get into a fistfight.

Cokegate - 10. Easily. This is frickin' kindergarten stuff. I'm not even sure minor league baseball teams would stoop as low as to give away free tickets with soda purchases. If you need to give away tickets to fill up the stadium, fine. You have a crappy product and everyone knows it. But give them away to good causes, like Wounded Warrior, the Vet Hospital, or Boys and Girls Clubs or SOMETHING. Its just one more black eye on our football program, the athletic department, and the university as a whole. One more reason for the entire country to laugh at us. I hope whoever initiated that "marketing strategy" spent this morning cleaning out their office.

I may be alone, but I don't fully get the embarassment for Cokegate. Appalachian State was something that profoundly changed my entire outlook on life and college football. I feel like this Coca Cola thing is something to be forgotten by next week. I just don't think the 2 are even comparable.

Its kind of the straw that broke the camel's back IMO.  The bowl game streak was broken, winning season streak broken, etc. etc.  Now all we have left is the consecutive games with over 100,000 fans and many people are rightly feeling that its in serious jeopardy.  And the AD is apparently feeling the same way, setting up various giveaway promos.  This one obviously was a mistake but its just evidence of the undercurrent.  If Michigan loses the attendance streak what does it have left other than for people to truly accept that the team they love is a plain and simple average program.  It's not a fun thing to finally have to accept.

but I've never felt embarrassment about a loss on the field. I've been disappointed, unhappy, but not embarrassed.

What I've found most embarrassing in order:

the Ed Martin scandal, particularly the access he was given to the players

the infighting after the RR hire

the Ellerbe era, not so much the records as how he ran the program

the halo

Give it a rest.  It was reported Coke had a block of tickets for the MN game and they chose to distribute in this manner.  Michigan Athletics now asked them to end the promo.  So relax - ain't no big deal.

I don't believe the official story one bit.

I can't see Coke, which makes loads of coin selling its beverages at Michigan sporting events, doing this all on their own.

I find it highly more likely that the Brandon and his team of marketing geniuses thought this was a great way to fill those empty seats while achieving synergy by leveraging the value of Coke's brand or some BS. When it blew up, he blamed someone else.

I find the lame cover story to be as embarrassing as the original promotion.

When Michigan lost the Gator Bowl in 1979 to end a horrible season.  I was in Texas at the time, my first time living in Texas, and I was beside myself with embarrassment amongst my friends.  Later that day my then girlfriend reminded me that I wasn't personally responsible for any of it, that I should stop living vicariously through people but to enjoy their triumphs and commiserate their losses, but at no time take credif for their success nor feel responsible for their failure.

Smart gal, probably why she moved on.

I was pretty embarassed by the whole Miles has agreed to come here, our AD is on a boat. No he isn't coming here fiasco.

However, that was nothing compared to Greg Schiano being asked to be our HC while he was still at Rutgers and then TURNING US DOWN.

"I'd rather be at Rutgers" - that's low.

I think there is a bit causality to these situations.  The horror leads to Toledo '08 which leads to Stretchgate which brings us to cokegate.

Therefore I refuse to rate them individually and will just say my embarrassment for Michigan football is a solid 8 right now.  Flyovers are awesome and sitting with Dad in Section 24 never gets old.

or direct, tangible connection to. Disappointed, angry, sad, etc maybe, but not embarrassed.

Being "embarrassed" by StretchGate? That's crazy. There was no "there" there.

There has been only one thing related to Michigan football that has embarrassed me. It's not the coaches or the players or anyone in the AD. It's the fans. Michigan fans lately have been the worst group I've ever seen or been a part of in my life. Bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch. I used to think Michigan had the best fan base in the country, but that's just because we were winning a lot then. Now I realize we're no better than any other team, but likely worse because everyone is so spoiled. If you want to cheer for a team only when they win, I don't know what to tell you. There's probably still time to jump on the Alabama bandwagon.

The Horror      -  10   This game still gets brought up by friends to me. This damn game just will never go away.

Toledo '08         -7 Embarrassing at the time, but that whole season was an embarrasment, so this individual game isn't that high in my opinion. Now the season as a whole is a 10 to me.

Stretchgate      - 3 While it bothers me that it happened, it isn't all that embarrasing in my opinion. Every team does this same shit, but the news were on a witch hunt to get some bad news and hits.

Cokegate       - 2 Embarrasing right now for sure. However, it will blow over after this week and everyone will forget about it.

1 - Why is a promo done by a private company after they purchased the tickets an embarrassment?  Especially when it was intended for students?  Much ado about nothing.

I know folks write off the Toldeo loss because the team was 3-9.  But that still hurt.  That Toldeo team was awful themselves, also finishing 3-9 with a much lighter schedule.  They got destroyed at home by Florida International.

That game also marks the only time I've ever seen a 100 yard interception return for a touchdown.  Thank you, Nick Sheridan.

I guess I have a tough time differentiating embarrassing and infuriating, but for me probably nothing from the last few years has bothered me more than us getting destroyed by State last season.

ND this year should've felt just as bad but honestly, although I truly expected us to win, by that time I guess I had also gotten used to us losing (by a ton).

I have just received an email from a relative who never emailed me before, who felt compelled to include a .jpg of an article by a Columbus sportswriter claiming that Michigan really was never any good. So I guess I you could say the Utah loss is bringing my family closer together. The Utah loss hurts because it means that the rest of the season is likely going to suck, and that we will go into every game wondering if we possibly can win, no matter how bad the opponent is. It also means that whatever concatenation of infirmities afflicted the team last season still exists in some form.

Went to the U-go's in the union the other day to buy a couple of powerades. Technically because they are coke products I was offered the two tickets to minnesota. As a michigan fan and student I had never been more embarrased to what our program had come to.
