Ty Isaac hardship denied
Per Josh Newkirk tweet at press conference. They are appealing but I doubt a reversal happens. Probaly expected and not bad news since we seem to be solid at RB.

Let's move on. It's 3 days from the game. It is not happening.

I am of the feeling it was a longshot, is that the consensus? Quick, someone tell me how upset I should be!
August 27th, 2014 at 12:56 PM ^
I'm actually kind of glad. I mean, I'm sure it sucks for Isaac but from a team standpoint -- his eligability helps us out more down the line than it does this season.
August 27th, 2014 at 1:04 PM ^
Exactly my thought. It's always good to be able to spread good players over the coming seasons.

One of the possible justifications or the waiver is that the student is needed in the day-to-day care of the family member (hence the roughly-100-mile limit, as beyond that the student can't make it home every day without excessive commuting time). It isn't surprising that the NCAA didn't buy the idea of the seven-plus-hour-a-day commute for Isaac. I don't see any of the other rationales for a waiver fitting any better.

I'd view this as more of a clarification. I don't think Hoke had previously made it clear—at least in a press conference—that the initial waiver filing had been denied and they were in the process of appealing.
Here's some other news from the presser:
Hoke: Delano Hill out. Prob ready for ND. Also says "good chance" Drake Harris will redshirt.

Hoke says still concern w Kalis back but RG still up in air. If start today Joey B would start

Looks like Bunting will RS as well.
August 27th, 2014 at 12:51 PM ^
Well get ready for a long year. Our 6'1, 290 pound walk on would start at RG if the game were played today. I hate all things right now.
August 27th, 2014 at 12:59 PM ^
Well the game isnt played today. Let's see what happens on saturday. Kalis still a couple of days to win the job. Maybe our undersized RG will surprise us and do well.
August 27th, 2014 at 1:22 PM ^
better without Negative Nancy and Debbie Downer doing their utmost to drag others to their respecitve depressed depths.
August 27th, 2014 at 2:10 PM ^
Right, but Glasgow will be back next week, and will likely displace JB rather than Miller, if Kalis cannot go.
August 27th, 2014 at 4:35 PM ^
That same walk on guard played last year until he got injured, so is safe to say that he was ahead of a couple of people in the depth chart last year... It's not like he's a freshman walk on who has never played a significant snap....

I know it is pretty far away but somebody is going to transfer either before spring or after. IMO there is no way Smith, Green, and Isaac all stay for 2015.
August 27th, 2014 at 12:57 PM ^
If Coach Nuss runs the offense anywhere near the way it was ran at Bama, there's room for all 3. Hopefully Isaac takes this year off to learn the system though. If anybody transfers, I could see it being someone like Ross Douglas.
August 27th, 2014 at 1:40 PM ^
Maybe Isaac will be the 3rd down back and Smith/Green continue to spell each other. If Isaac jumps either Smith or Green or both I can't see all three guys on the roster by Utah 2015. I'd love to be wrong but that is the feeling I have.

He moved to slot receiver like two weeks ago. Hoke said he's talented and they want to find a way to get him on the field eventually. I'd expect him to make an impact in 2015 at the slot.
August 27th, 2014 at 12:57 PM ^
I doubt it's Ty...not sure he'd want to go through another transfer.
What a great 3 headed monster that would be, though. Keep their legs fresh by rotation and by the 4th quarter they'd be shredding the tired defenses.
August 27th, 2014 at 12:59 PM ^
rarely come back.

August 27th, 2014 at 12:59 PM ^
I've been wondering about this myself. There just isn't much separation between them talent wise nor class wise. In addition, they share the same skill set...unless Issac cotinues to separate himself as a more viable receiver out of the backfield. We'll see what the year brings. If Green does well.....we might see a movement from Smith.
August 27th, 2014 at 1:17 PM ^
From all we have read, Nuss plans to use multiple backs. If Green and Smith both get substantial carries, as seems likely, why would either transfer? And why would Isaac transfer without playing a down? Maybe after 2015 someone might, but I can't really see why any of them would transfer before seeing how that season unfolds.
August 27th, 2014 at 1:23 PM ^
Right now we have zero established RBs. How about we wait for one of them to break out as a star and steal all the playing time away from the others, thus leading to a domino effect of lost playing time before we making such predictions. People are making it out like we have Yeldon coming back for his JR season and no one believes they can crack the rotation.
And Bama has had 3 RBs at the same time all do very well. Last point - if you have 4 backs and 1 transfers it is generally going to be the back that is going to help you the least so I never understand the angst about it.
August 27th, 2014 at 1:34 PM ^
I'd be surprised if a 1200/700/300 yard split keeps them all happy.
August 27th, 2014 at 1:50 PM ^
Not saying you are wrong but I do not like posts that speculate about 2015 transfers when the 2014 season has not started. Besides, I am not sure that the waiver denial makes a transfer more likely. If anything, it probably makes it less likely.
August 27th, 2014 at 1:04 PM ^
They appealed so there's still hope...
August 27th, 2014 at 1:24 PM ^
or do people really believe new evidence and arguments have been presented to the NCAA?
August 27th, 2014 at 1:56 PM ^
It sounds like the initial ruling came late last week - LINK
"The waiver got denied initially, and we've appealed it," Hoke confirmed Wednesday. "(We appealed) probably last week, mid week."
As I understand it, the rule is generally that the school must typically be within 100 miles of the student-athlete's home city for the waiver to pass muster. Typically. That being said, I don't really mind this - I think we might get an even better Ty Isaac if he has a year to develop outside of games.
August 27th, 2014 at 8:20 PM ^
I think this is old news...
I'm bolding because I know this is a hot button topic for many.
Coach Hoke said a presser or two (or three) ago that they were appealing the decision. So the decision had already been passed down at that time.
We just all missed it because we haven't heard the outcome of the appeal.
That said, I don't think there is any new news or update on his status from yesterday to today.
He was denied yesterday, he is still denied today. He could've been denied a month ago. What we're waiting on is the outcome of the appeal. Who knows when they've filed it.

STFU and GTFO...this team isn't even 1-AA good. The team that beat us got votes in the Top 25 of D1, they had NFL players and were 1-AA national championship calibur.
Calm the fuck down...it's one game.
And I'm not being hypocritical telling you to calm down when I'm cursing...your post was just that annoying and warranted it.
August 27th, 2014 at 9:55 PM ^
So if it were a name with more starz attached to it, you would be fine with it? Even if that man isn't playing the best football? That makes sense.
August 27th, 2014 at 1:12 PM ^
I wouldn't mind if Ty redshirted. Green and Smith can carry the load if the O-line comes together. If the O-line is swiss cheese then what good is having three superstar backs splitting carries all season?
August 27th, 2014 at 1:12 PM ^
I wish that we could have him this year, now that we've got Weber in the fold for 2015 and we need an immediate upgrade in performance out of that position.
The NCAA absolutely had to deny this. If you let Isaac get his hardship waiver, then it would open up yet another loophole for unscrupulous coaches to exploit. Even with this decision, I'll bet that coaches are going to start exploiting it. If there are any under the radar home state kids that programs like LSU or Alabama miss that go out of state and blow up, Miles or Saban can get on the phone and recruit them back home without them losing any eligibility.

Just curious to know just how bad kids get hosed by NCAA transfer rules.
August 27th, 2014 at 1:48 PM ^
I would think yes. It basically makes this a standard run of the mill transfer now. The hardship waiver was just an appeal to get Isaac immediate eligibility instead of having to sit out for 1 year like a normal transfer.
August 27th, 2014 at 2:22 PM ^
He'd be like any other redshirt. Redshirts get scholarships.
Most kids don't get hosed at all. Just football, basketball, and (I believe) hockey players sit a year after a transfer (barring harship exemption), because those are the players that generally are academically weakest.
If anyone gets hosed by the transfer rules, it is the school/team they are transferring to. The school gives a scholarship but doesn't get the player for a year.
August 27th, 2014 at 1:37 PM ^
So in 2015 Green/Smith will be Juniors and Isaac will be a RS Sophmore?
I’m ok with this. This decision effectively gives UM a RB for the 2014 class. Green and Smith are more than capable of carrying the load in 2014.

to redshirt. He needs to get his hamstring problems behind him. He also really needs to put on 10-15 pounds of muscle. And with the WR position being one of our deepest right now, it shouldn't impact the team at all. So, next year, the WR corps will be really incredible, even if Funchess goes to the NFL.
