2014 MBB Commit DJ Wilson - New Highlight Video
He's a consensus 3* and ranked #135 in the country according to Rivals, but this highlight video just oozes potential. I'm no rankings guru, but he seems fairly underrated to the untrained eye. I think he may be headed for a redshirt year given his weight (or lack thereof) and the depth at the 4/5 (assuming McGary returns), but I'm really excited to see him play.
Oops double post.
I don't know about his handle but a 6'9 2 would be ....cool. :)
But Coach B said in a story this week he is a combo forward so 3/4 seems right.
part-time lineup in 2015-16 when walton is resting on bench:
PG: chapman 6'7
SG: wilson 6'9
SF: irvin 6'6
PF: doyle 6'8
C: donnal 6'9
that would be hilarious, hee haw funny...
Won't Spike be a senior that season?
Levert might still be on the team also.
nephew. Cousin to Nick Stauskus. Used to ride the bus with Lester Abrams and John Wrangler.
Don't you remember, he was up at the Corral one night when we were there... he's a good dancer. You must have seen him ... I was amazed, he does a Marengay... I tell you if I was a girl I'd be impressed.
His success on this team will depend 100% on his ability to appropriately add bulk to that frame. No doubt the talent is there.
Very reminiscent of Jared Jeffries from Indiana.
After Sanderson works his magic on him for a year, I think DJ will be a very solid contributor. It would be great to redshirt one of the Wilson/Doyle combo, but we may need bodies next year.
I'm less impressed by the dunk highlights (6'9" with 7'+ wing span *should* be able to dunk well!) than I am with other film that shows a decent outside game that could make him a tough stretch 4 matchup. Or a 3 that can consistently shoot over the top of shorter wings. But he does show decent athleticism on the dunk-a-thon video, so that's always good to see.
Nice! Any chance we could get the occasional recruit that doesn't need to gain 20+ lbs (with the exception of McGary)? I am harkening back to the days of Buch Wade and Richard Reliford. Or even Loy Vaught.
as freshman and definitely arrived with B1G approved physiques. Honeslty, I think Butch should have played football as an insane MIKE. He didn't have the hands to make a great tight end a la Paul Jokisch.
Based on this year's team, I am ok with skinny but talented freshman. Bulk may nice but perhaps an overrated luxury compared to years past.
That was impressive. Dude has a dope haircut and was much more athletic than I was originally expecting.
Thanks for the clip. Of our recent recruiting classes we are getting even longer with Donnal Doyle and DJ. Horford is 6-10 and Morgan 6-8 ("feels like Morgan is taller") but with Mitch, and these 3 we are getting lengthier and more athletic it appears. We do need more dudes to play above the rim and this kid fills the bill.
Beilien had some really nice quotes on DJ yesterday.
Wilson has a 7-foot-3 wingspan and will be a versatile addition to the frontcourt. “D.J. is just oozing with potential. He is very skilled and can become an excellent combo forward for us,” Beilein said. “He has great length and can play above the rim because of his athleticism.”
Really looking forward to seeing how Wilson and Donnal fit into Coach B's system these next couple of years. They're not the same player by any means -- Wilson's clearly more athletic (THAT'S RAAAACIIIIST!) -- but both bring a lot of the qualities Beilein seems to want in that stretch 4 spot. Both have the length you'd ideally like at the 4 (unlike GRIII and Novak) and are good shooters and ballhandlers -- and both also seem to have pretty polished post-up games for their age (Donnal particularly, but I was surprised to see in this film of Wilson some nice back-to-the-basket moves as well).
What I love about our hoops program right now is that you know as long as these kids are willing to do the work, Beilein, Jordan, Bacari, and Meyer will get every ounce of potential out of them. I wish I could say the same for the football program...
And Doyle is the true post threat, which is something 80% of college teams seem to lack. If he is a poor man's Randle I'll be tickled. As someone else said, we really have not even seen Beilein's true intentions yet since he is probably just now getting the length he has been seeking.
Don't think Donnal is a good ballhandler. I'd bet he is a 5 at UM.
He can shoot and his frame is a bit narrow for the 5 spot IMO. If he's the biggest guy on the floor, we're going to get beat up in some games. One of the criticisms I heard of him in high school was that even though most of the time he had a big size advantage, he'd settle for outside shots a lot and not attack the basket enough. Just seems like a stretch 4 for sure to me.
I just don't see him coming off of ball screen from the wing, slashing or shooting off of hand-offs.
Real excited to see him after an off season in the weight program. He looks like he will split between the 3/4 spot. Love the length.
Wilson looks like a Brent Petway who can dribble and shoot.
Good grief, THAT guy is our raw, underrated recruit?
Sorry for the double.
I know this has been said, but:
Beilein recruited him = I expect him to be better than his star rating.
