Charlotte Bobcats/Trey Burke draft board
My brother works for the Charlotte Bobcats (Hornets?) and just sent me this picture:
This is from last year's draft, so I guess they were considering drafting him. From what I can read, the scouting report says:
- Outstanding pick & roll player
- Can make shots from anywhere
- Good shooter off the dribble
- Very good at driving and kicking
- Sees the floor well
- Quick physical player
Even though the Bobcats ended up taking Cody Zeller with the 4th overall pick, I thought this was a cool look into how a pro team prepares for the draft.
I wonder what the Piston's board said..."drives foreign car" maybe?
They already have Kemba Walker, I'm guessing they wouldve traded Trey like Minnesota did
Looks cool but it seems bizarre that a team would make something this for their internal draft prep. Now I imagine them having little shrine to each player they considered.
Except for the Pistons. The Pistons have a shrine to Joe Dumars. Joe Dumars uber alles.
Internal Pistons conversation (I haz connections):
JoeD: "Can we draft Joe Dumars?"
Random Front Office Person: "Sir, you are Joe Dumars. No, we cannot draft you."
JoeD: "Then can we draft a guy who plays like me?"
RFOP: "That's what we are trying to do."
JoeD: "Good. But since we can't draft Joe Dumars, make sure that whoever we draft doesn't overshadow Joe Dumars."
RFOP: "Well, there's this kid who plays for Michigan who has a great vision, can shoot, can pass..."
JoeD: "Do they like him at Michigan?"
RFOP: "Yes. They love him. Drafting him would definitely boost attenda-"
JoeD: "Skip him. We must not overshadow Joe Dumars."
makes no sense to me. Kemba has proven to be a pretty good player, and Trey's ceiling is well above being a back-up. Although you would think these guys have full-time jobs as talent evaluators so they're probably going over each player projected around them.
He was too obvious of a pick for Dumars. He likes to go with the "wow" factor, a la Darko.
Um more or less everyone at the time viewed Darko as the best pick available after LeBron.
Why does everyone think that? There were plenty of people who thought it was a terrible pick during the draft. I can remember Dukie V saying it was a huge mistake and Dumars would regret it 30 seconds after the pick was made on the draft show. I remember personally being really upset we didn't take Carmello..and argueing with my friends for the next 2 years because they thought Prince was better and we didnt need him.
The Pistons also had a chart on Trey:
PRO's
- Outstanding pick & roll player
- Can make shots from anywhere
- Good shooter off the dribble
- Very good at driving and kicking
- Sees the floor well
- Quick physical player
CONS
- Attended University of Michigan
Completely missed the joke and got offended, lol
with the Bobcats? If you can tell/don't mind me asking.
He does something within their sales team. I don't know exactly his title, but he was in an entry level sales position until yesterday. From what I know, it's kind of a tough position right now, but has tons of upside. Not trying to be vague or anything, but that's really all I know. Oh, and he got to meet MJ at a Christmas party. Said he's actually a nice guy in person. I think he gifted all the employees an Apple TV or something like that.
Hear a lot of bad stuff about MJ, almost odd to hear a good thing! Is he a big basketball guy or is this just a job for him?
I wouldn't say he's a big basketball guy - he's a big sports guy in general (has a degree in Sports Management), so I'd say this is more than just a job for him. He seems to really like it, especially since he took about a 50% pay cut to take the job. From the way I understand it though, once you have an "in" in the sports world, there's tons of opportunity to grow and move around. Case in point: he's been with the organization for less than a year and already got promoted. Granted, he's worked his ass off, but the opportunities are there.
For subscribers to the New Yorker, there was a very cool writeup in the Talk of the Town section on Joe Dumars' own draft day back in 1985:

Quite revealing; a worthwhile short read.
That wasn't made by Charlotte.
Dumars got lucky when two players slid to him in the draft - Drummond and Monroe. It happened again with Burke, I have no idea why he didn't pull the trigger.
I think my fiancé and I were the only ones that voted for Trey...would have loved to watch him play every night down here.
impressive start, having a personal story that ties in nicely with the thread.
