Meta: What brought you here?

Submitted by Laser Wolf on January 8th, 2024 at 8:39 AM

Feeling a bit reflective this morning given the long road getting back to this point. Was thinking what a special place this is and wondering how others happened upon it.

I know I started reading during the 2006 season and it's probably why the Eleven Swans post is the one that is permanently seared in my brain as the quintessential MGoBlog post. Don't think I started really posting until a few years after that but I am thankful for this weird little community.

So what brought you around these parts?

Started reading my freshman year (‘08) after my friend who lived down the hall at Couzins sent me a link to one of Brian’s postgame summaries of an early Rich Rod debacle

It was during the 2010 season, a very forgettable one, but I needed to know that I was not the only one freaking out about our football team at the time. I joined right after the Iowa loss that year, and I had severe BPONE, angst and whatever else you want to call it. I wasn't sure we would ever climb out of that hole. Thank you to everyone on here who provides candor, insight, thoughts, and more than anything a community in which I rely upon daily. GO BLUE

Talking football with another Michigan alum who told me about it. It was right after my father passed. It is literally the only social media thing that I do.

Who's got an earlier join date than me? NOOOOBOOODDYYY.

I want to say I started reading mid/late 2005 and it was maybe some reference to Sufjan Stevens (Illinois was fresh at the time) and maybe a link from EDSBS that brought me over. I've never left!

Was a senior at UM in 2011, and I think I got tired of going off of ESPN, Bleacher Report, and a few generic, national sites to get Michigan material. I'd heard a few friends talk about MGoBlog so I figured what the heck, would give it a shot.

The content is what keeps me coming back. MGoBlog is truly a "one of one" in the college sports journalism world. Maybe another one exists somewhere, but I don't know of another site devoted specifically to one university or one team that writes as well as this one, that posts content as good and in-depth as this one, and isn't just your standard "run of the mill" blog posting the same generic stuff that I can read over at ESPN or an SI-affiliated site.

Only feedback I really have:

PLEASE BRING BACK THE APP! If you need to start collecting monthly subscriptions to make it financially viable, so be it. I will put my money where my mouth is and pay the subscription. Happily.

Had been here off and on before, but I grew up with Lloyd Brady, so that was a lot of fun when that whole saga happened, and I kind of just hung around since then.  Lost an account when a school email ended so I'm on #2.

I moved to Birmingham, AL in 2009. I discovered Mgoblog as a way to stay connected to Michigan football. I joined officially in 2010 and have been on here ever since, mostly as a lurker. I have since returned home to West Michigan but have stayed connected to the site and it is still my go to source for all things Michigan. Go Blue!

I don't remember life before this web site. Years ago, I had a previous account (not sure, but I think it was called mrocks) that I would access while at work and ended up with some nasty internet bug on my computer. IT told me it came from this site so, not wanting to get fired, I stopped using that account. I don't even know if it's still active. Then I lurked for years until that generation of IT folks had moved on, at which point I created a new account.

Probably the World Series of Poker pieces, which would have been 2006. It was really good writing. After that, Brian sort of caught up to the other Michigan-centered blogs and then blew them out of the water when he went full time and had a good run of hiring new writers.

I knew Carr left the cupboard bare when he retired. I checked out during the RichRod years. Checked back in briefly during the Hoke years. I was all in with the Harbaugh hire, and right around that time met Adam Schnepp, who told me about this little blog he wrote for. I couldn't believe something like this existed and I was clueless about it. It's been a fun ride, guys.

I started coming here during the Dave Brandon debacle (kudos to this site for that, because we probably don't get Harbaugh if he's still here), then I got hooked during the ensuing coaching search.

Don't remember anymore. It's been a while. Created an account after a while though, seeing mention of Cricket, the sport. The day after Harbaugh was hired.

I first discovered the blog after Shane Morris's concussion, which felt like the biggest scandal to ever hit Michigan football until the Dr. Anderson story came to light (and then of course, everything this season).

I lurked for awhile then officially created an account when Harbaugh's return felt certain. It's funny how much has changed since December 2014 and yet how much has remained the same. I'm grateful to be here.

I came here from another Michigan sports blog that was shutting down, and said "go here!" Can't remember the name if it, but I do remember they posted a video of an OSU coed doing a strip-tease (wearing an OSU football jersey) in order to entice someone to go to OSU. It got A LOT of comments, mainly regarding hand placement. Those were the (politically and socially) incorrect days...

I was following the Jabrill recruitment back in like 2013 or something and some link led me here. Lurked for a few years then signed up in 2014 I think. Damn. 10 years.

Summer of 2008, I’m sitting around reading my paid subscription to The Wolverine, chatting with a co-worker at my law firm in DC who was also a MIchigan grad. He said “check out MGoBlog” and after a solid 2 year lurk period, I finally had to comment.

A dozen years after that I ended up having a weird connection to 2 huge Michigan stories and all the years of being here paid off in street cred.

I got in at the beginning, although I wasn't immediately a regular visitor.  At the end of the 2004 season, I occasionally visited the "edge of the internet" message board.  One day a poster mentioned that he was starting a new blog.  I clicked on it.  There wasn't a ton of content, though, and I didn't return for a few months.

What actually got me hooked was during following spring, when Brian started posting a lot about the Goin' to Work Pistons during their bid to repeat.  I started visiting regularly.  When Brian began writing UFRs the next year, this became a daily must-read.

The main drawback with the site in the early years was the Haloscan message format that just led to long, open-ended discussions that frequently turned into arguments, with posters often stealing each others' usernames.

In June 2008 Brian upgraded the site, with the tagline "Ladies and gentlemen we are now blogging in space."  The message board is still largely the same now as then, and I think it could use a couple upgrades, but it's definitely better than the Haloscan mess.

It's been a little while!

I found MGo via Deadspin in 2006 or 2007, I think around the time of the Marques Slocum "fuck lion" thing. I became an active community member during the 2007 coaching search. I joined the current site a bit late because I spent most of the 2008 season adjusting to living in England. I was VERY active as a member here in the RichRod era but have tapered off a lot. Still read every frontpage post and try to find time to revisit the community. Never thought back then we'd be here, still can't really believe it.

I finally made it to the Big House for the rematch vs App State. After the game, I wondered what the attendance was, Googled, and discovered this site quite by accident. Hard to believe it was a decade ago

I needed something to listen to late one evening at work and stumbled onto this crazy podcast with in-depth football analysis, a Gimmicky Top 5 favorite cheeses segment (because Wisconsin), and Brian’s repeated references to high school quiz bowl. I knew I was home.

I was sitting at the bar at Damon's by Briarwood during a football weekend in the early 2010s, and started chatting with a guy who was an M fan and a ticket broker.  He suggested that I check out MGoBlog, and I've been an obsessive lurker ever since.

I've been a lurker since at least 2008 here. Finally made a profile a few years back but would always forget my passwords, so never really posted much.

Had to log in today though.

I found a bunch of Michigan blogs when I was notified that I'd been admitted in May 2010. This is the one I focused on because of the content. I lurked for about a year before I created the account to post.

We are probably twins. I was here to read Seven Swans too, but my official MGoBlog birth certificate says 2009 was when I made my account.

Seven Swans in my annual UM vs OSU reading tradition

Today is something more. It's what you get after a quarter century of Seven Swans

I had to go back and look. A co-worker recommended the blog. I joined the morning of The 2011 Game. Which we promptly lost; sorry--my bad. I went back and looked at that year for the memories. That was a weird one. Such hope and promise coming in--Hoke's 2nd year after an 11-2 season (in which we broke the OSU streak for the first time, at home--the snow game), returning with Denard and plenty of talent. Then The Game. The first half was Denard as a star; god he was fun to watch--all-time favorite Michigan athlete. 67 yard touchdown run. Up 21-20 at half. And then didn't score again. I also figured out that very first day to avoid the gameday threads. Woof.

I love this blog. It may seem weird to say, but it has enriched my life. My passion for Michigan is hard to convey to non-fans; UM is really sacred to me. So finding a group of like-minded, passionate, well-informed, smart, funny fans has kept me going through the dark years. Enjoying with all of you the great times--Denard, Trey, JJ, Blake, Mo and Franz, Hutch, Chandee. And finding catharsis in the bad ones--I'll not list them today.

I find some of the best thinking and writing on this blog. Not just sports-related. I am grateful for all of you, Michigan brothers and sisters!

I remember following Terrelle Pryor's recruitment with great interest and finding this site.  We lost out on him, but I gained a website that has become a daily ritual.  So really, win/win.

It was the early Rich Rod days, like around the time of his hire.  Until I found MGoBlog, I would frequent the comments sections at the Freep and Detroit News for banter about Michigan football.  Those comments sections were filled with trolls and MSU and OSU fans, even WVU fans, that all hated RR.  I liked RR at the time because he hadn't had a chance to wreck things yet.  And I was a newbie to Internet banter and I would routinely get sucked in to arguments with trolls.  I hated it.  Then I found MGoBlog and everything was right with the world again.

Looks like I first joined in 2009.  The reason I landed on this blog way back then escapes my memory but I'd wager that I was looking to argue with people about whether or not RR could succeed at Michigan.
