My take: M isn't leaving the B1G without OSU going to the same place with them
I think the value to the B1G and for the networks (the real power here = $$$) for both M & OSU is in the rivalry, so if either leaves without the other going to the same place, they both lose value in their new situation. OSU has been running the B1G for decades, so they aren't going anywhere. So M isn't going anywhere.
What do others on this forum think about my reasoning?

I believe you meant.... "Ok, Cool, Hook 'Em"

Check out the Diary, with TV ratings. Disputes your hypothesis.
November 17th, 2023 at 1:32 PM ^
No, it doesn't. I hypothesized both programs' value would be less without the annual rivalry game. Both would still have great value, of course. The post with the viewership data didn't include past M vs OSU games. My recollection from posts last year is the two most watched college football games EVER were the last 2 editions of The Game.

Bro. This is not thread worthy. Just because you're thinking it, doesn't mean you need to say it.
November 17th, 2023 at 11:32 AM ^
you must be new here.

The whole idea of a forum is for people to share ideas relative to a common interest. I'm in several forums related to various pursuits, including hobbies, clubs, my neighborhood, my church, etc. This is the ONLY one where people are criticized for sharing their ideas.

I generally welcome the criticism. Without it, this place would turn into the old UM football forums on "MLive." Hundreds of hot takes, horrible signal:noise.

Its because this OP isn't worth a whole thread discussion in itself. Its part of the 90ish other "let's leave the B1G" threads. This is a response or thought that can go in another thread about the same. I fail to grasp why for some posters this is a difficult concept: New and noteworthy = thread topic. Noteworthy, well researched and developed = diary. The rest belongs in the thread created about the topic. This comment - the OP - is nothing new. It's not a particularly noteworthy thought, and it's definitely not well sourced or discussed.
November 17th, 2023 at 12:55 PM ^
If new and noteworthy are both needed to post, an original "should we leave the big ten?" would never be created therefore there would be no place for op to put his/her thoughts.
November 17th, 2023 at 12:59 PM ^
"This comment - the OP - is nothing new."
> I haven't seen anyone else postulate the same idea.
"It's not a particularly noteworthy thought"
> "That's just, like, your opinion, man." - The Dude
"and it's definitely not well sourced or discussed."
> There is no source, just an idea. And I posted asking what folks thought, so starting a discussion.

Maybe your other forums are just lonely then?

The value isnt in the rivalry per se. Its that both teams are massive draws week in and week out. If Michigan leaves, Ohio State isnt sticking around to let Purdue and Minnesota make money off their back. Neither is the Pac4
November 17th, 2023 at 11:37 AM ^
Yes, the value is in the rivalry PLUS their success. Good add.
November 17th, 2023 at 11:42 AM ^
Nah, fuck Ohio State. Rivalries are good when there is a mutual respect. That no longer exists.
The rivalry needs to die. As we have seen rivalries are no longer sacred cows in college football.
Michigan’s best team is being undermined by the actions of Ohio State. Harbaugh is most likely going to resign and head towards the NFL at the end of year.
Fuck Ohio State, the Big Ten, and anyone who supports either.
November 17th, 2023 at 11:50 AM ^
Or mutual animosity. Red Wings/Avalanche come to mind.
November 17th, 2023 at 1:15 PM ^
The Avalanche didn’t backstab the Wings. That rivalry was100% on the ice as intense as it was.

Terrible. OSU is behind this mess. UM should have nothing to do with those motherfuckers.
November 17th, 2023 at 12:37 PM ^
Yep. Let this rivalry die or play once in a while in playoff. Fuck OSU

Sorry man, bad timing on your post. With the news that came out last night and what was just released today this won't be received well.

I think M playing ND every year would bring in huge ratings. Add that with FSU and Clemson, and I'm sure the ratings would be higher overall than what we get staying in the B1G.
November 17th, 2023 at 11:45 AM ^
I think M vs ND would fall somewhat short in value, because M vs OSU has long been seen as (perhaps) the greatest rivalry in U. S. sports.
November 17th, 2023 at 11:32 AM ^
The only place ohio should follow M is on the head coach suspension list for their stolen signs given to other team and their alleged Day and bros off field crap

I sure hope Brian makes a lot of money from these "I just had a thought" threads. I mean someone should benefit from them.

I thought the whole point of leaving was to leave that turd in its toilet.
November 17th, 2023 at 11:51 AM ^
I think college football is the thief of joy.
November 17th, 2023 at 12:10 PM ^
It only is if the team you cheer for shoots itself in the foot constantly. Best chance at a national championship in 25 years and its going to implode it seems. UofM waiting weeks to get into the counter PR campaign or to even deal with it has made it hard to even try to defend the university. They were under a PR campaign to destroy them and they just sat there hoping it went away. Just sad
November 17th, 2023 at 12:01 PM ^
The only reason we are in this mess is because of Osu.
Leave this conference and osu behind. Let’s go play FSU or ND the last game of the year

I didn't see this post garnering a lot of enthusiasm. :)
November 17th, 2023 at 1:04 PM ^
Not meant to do that. I was just trying to think logically about value in the light of M backing down on the suspension, as in, maybe that was part of their deciding to move towards reconciliation.
November 17th, 2023 at 2:55 PM ^
There's no logical thought behind your position, just feelingsball.
November 17th, 2023 at 12:19 PM ^
Michigan v Texas during Thanksgiving weekend in the SEC would be just as big a draw. So would Michigan v Notre Dame in the ACC.
November 17th, 2023 at 1:08 PM ^
I like the idea of the top all-time winningest programs creating a new conference. Even that wouldn't be perfect, since Yale is in the top 10 & so is OSU.
November 17th, 2023 at 12:38 PM ^
Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like uh, your opinion, man.
November 17th, 2023 at 12:40 PM ^
I don't know how practical it is, but I would love to play Notre Dame every year. I always thought ND games were fun. I think it would be a while before we had talent parity with the big boys in the SEC, but competing there could be fun at times. I'd really to see us do something different. I'm just bored with Spartans with chips on their shoulders and Buckeyes with cannabis on their helmets. These games aren't fun anymore. I like playing Penn State and Minnesota, though that's not entirely about football. I'm pretty much indifferent to the rest.
But it's not my money I'm playing with, so 🤷♀️
