From Seth on the Family Situation

Submitted by Seth on August 8th, 2023 at 10:59 AM

Our view when we look this way is a lot better than the opposite direction.

I wanted to let the readership know why I haven't been responding to emails or writing much the last week. My son has been diagnosed with something called Miller Fisher (no relation), a type of Guillain–Barré syndrome. It's rare, and one of the shittier things that can happen to your kid, but one of the better situations for the pediatric ICU at Mott because you can make a full recovery.

Unfortunately it's a bit of a haul to get there. If the treatment works his strength should return, he can come off the ventilator, and we can get to a new normal where I can get some work done. Until he turns the corner, I'm sorry that a lot of the things I do here are going to have to sit around.

We are not asking anything of any of you right now except patience. If you feel like showing gratitude to someone, please direct it towards the doctors and nurses of the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. I cannot begin to describe the level of caring and competence we've seen here from everyone. Things might have gone in a lot of directions in the last few days, and we are skidding along peak outcomes because of the brilliance and teamwork of their Pediatric, Neurology, Physical & Occupational Therapy, Psychiatry, Respiratory, Child Life Services and above all Nursing staffs.*

On the plus side, we have an INCREDIBLE view of the Arb and Huron River, and the public bathroom/shower we use has a painting of Tate and Denard.

So I think we'll be fine.

* Seriously, everybody one day should see what Rounds look like. It's like watching NASA work an Apollo mission.

Your son is in great hands Seth. Hoping for a speedy recovery. I had a coil put in my heart at Mott on my 20th birthday. I was not their typical patient, but they were amazing nonetheless.

seth, like probably everyone here i had no idea there was an issue with your son.  you all will be in our prayers and if there is anything we can do, simply ask.

that visit to the farm we spoke about is always open and we have lambs he can hold and pet, very sweet.  would be good for his healing, and maybe the rest of you, too.

blessings.

I'm so sorry.  May your family and other loved ones get through this ordeal intact and hers hoping that your son is soon smiling even brighter then Denard.  I'm not really the praying type myself, but will be sending one towards your son's complete and total recovery.

Seth,

As a father of a child who was in the ICU, I know how difficult this is.  I am sending you and your family lots of thoughts and support during this difficult time.  It sounds like he is in the right place and I hope he gets all the care and love that he needs.

All my best to you and the family, Seth-  it's a horrible thing for your child to be sick, but at least you're in the right place to handle it.

So glad to hear your son is getting the best care.  I'm so glad you are there for him and your family.  Like so many of us on this blog, we think of you as a friend even though we have probably never met you.  Big hugs from your fan base, Seth.

You all don’t owe us anything for the free content provided for years. Take care of your fam. I will say that I miss the content Brian used to provide, but obviously health comes first.

Very sorry to hear that, Seth. Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your boy, as well as strength and patience for you and your family. I hope you're as spot-on with your optimism about his prognosis as you were in your prediction about The Game. 👍

As an aside, Mott (and Michigan Medicine as a whole, really) truly is a gem. I grew up in Ann Arbor and have dealt with Mott in several capacities, i.e., as a patient, as a volunteer, as an employee, as a family member of a patient, and as a visitor. Everything there is top-notch. I came to fully appreciate its excellence after moving to California and dealing with Stanford Medicine when my son had RSV. I thought that since Michigan Medicine is great, Stanford Medicine must be even better. How wrong I was. I was shocked at how terrible the patient and family experience is there is compared to Michigan.

Glad you got into Mott. Sorry you and your family is having to deal with this. Many of us have “been there”, but no one will truly be able to go through what you’re experiencing.  Everyone has their own path and experiences. Our prayers with the care team, you, you wife and your child. My only advice - try to find something to look forward to everyday. A new game from Child Life, the athletes visiting on Thursday nights, 2 mins in the courtyard, your kid getting a bath for the first time in weeks. Whatever it is. There are a million difficult things going on each day.

and you’re not joking about rounds. Truly incredible.

Take care of family.

Seth, best wishes to your son for a full and quick recovery. Family is what life is all about.

Both my sons are doctors who trained at Michigan.  When I think of what constitutes a true Michigan (wo)man, I believe my boys fit the description as much as any athlete.  I had a serious health issue a few years ago that the doctors, nurses and many others at Michigan Medicine got me through and I made a full recovery.  They are my heroes.

Sorry to hear your son is struggling Seth.  I’m sure it’s tough for him but possibly tougher for you.   Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

Hopefully the MGO community was able to assist in some way to your earlier email. Sounds like a few knowledgeable folks chimed in. I, unfortunately, am not one of those.

All the best to you and your little guy. Sounds like you are in good hands on a path they have positive experience with.

Courage to your son, you, and your whole family.  You've got the whole MGoCommunity behind you (though, admittedly, the excellent staff at Mott is an even better asset to have).

Sorry to hear that Seth. I don't have any kids of my own so I can only imagine how hard this is for you. My wife and I will keep your son and family in our prayers. The whole Michigan family is here for you!

You're living my second biggest fear as a dad. So glad to hear there is a path back to normal for your kid and your family. I'm not a praying man, but I'm rooting like hell for you all.

Fuck Seth, I am so sorry to hear that. I'm glad your family is getting the care needed, and that you have the resources to do so. If there comes a time where that isn't the case, I hope you'd let the MGoBlog money cannon help. Much love

Seth, you have the support of our entire online MGo community, which is about as impressive a group as one might find. And many of us are parents who can either sympathize or empathize with you and your family's situation. Take the time you need, hang in there, and know that you and yours are far from alone as you walk through this. Kol hakavod in getting this far my friend!
