Did Hunter’s shot settle the score for Ben Brust’s shot in ‘13?
Brust hit the half-courter that tied the game and led to an eventual OT win for Wisconsin in 2013. Hunter finally returned the favor for Michigan today, 10 years and 17 days later.
I believe that settles the score and kills that ghost. And if this win gets Michigan in the tourny and/or keeps Wisconsin from making it, I believe it will take over as the biggest play in the history of the rivalry.
What say? Are you fine now??

Not yet. Need to make the tourney for the full makeup for that Brust BS

Maybe, but if so, Josh Gasser's shot in 2011 hasn't been evened up yet. UW did this to us twice in three years.
February 27th, 2023 at 11:43 AM ^
I have been around U-M since fall of '63 so sometimes my memory fails me. However, I don't think others like me will ever forget or get over what Wisconsin did to us in the 1973 Rose Bowl vote! That may be a different sport but Wisconsin is Wisconsin.... Screw Wisconsin!
February 27th, 2023 at 5:05 PM ^
I think we need a goon that specializes in undercutting Wisconsin players, stepping on their feet, and egregiously uses his elbows in tight situations. Maybe two goons...back to back for 8 years.
February 26th, 2023 at 10:47 PM ^
Hunter is a 40% shooter who hit a barely contested three from a few feet behind the arc to make up for a Wisconsin banked three moments earlier.
Brust chucked up a prayer from halfcourt than banked in.
Michigan finally hitting a say 20% probability thing doesn't make up for the 0.000021% things Wisconsin routinely gets away with.

Forgive me, but what game were you watching? I would say that inaccurately describes Hunter’s shot and definitely is wrong about what happened leading up to it.
If you want to argue that Brust’s make was more unlikely, I can buy that (although not really what I was asking). But let’s not ho-hum a shot from a guy who was barely able to corral the pass and then had about a second and a half to steady himself and launch the longest three he’s hit in his college career by far.
February 27th, 2023 at 2:12 AM ^
Yeah, but he did steady himself and was balanced when he took the shot. Brust was running in a direction perpendicular to the path to the hoop and threw it up from much farther while running at full speed. Pure luck.
Dickinson on the other hand was taking an NBA 3 with his feet set. Yes, he had to gather quickly to set and it was low-percentage, but it wasn't even close to Brust's shot. Hell, given the distance, I'd argue it wasn't even more improbable than Jordan Poole's 3. Poole is obviously a much better shooter, but he was a freshman and was shooting from several feet farther than Dickinson, while being 8 inches shorter and going against a closer contest (and at that point in time having less leg strength
February 27th, 2023 at 7:01 AM ^
Dickinson made a tough play look easy. He has to make a tricky catch of a pass that's not entirely on target, and when he secures the ball, he's probably 35 feet from the basket. He calmly takes a dribble, gets squared up and fires. Being 7'1" was definitely a huge asset there as he can get off the shot easily and doesn't need to use his legs as much as a shorter player.
Juwan Howard said Baker was the first option, but Dickinson might be the best guy in situations like that in general.
February 26th, 2023 at 11:57 PM ^
Hunter's was more than a few feet from behind the line and there was a Wisconsin player coming towards him to contest the shot. It's not like it was totally wide open.
February 27th, 2023 at 2:13 AM ^
Feet set, and "contests" matter less when you're 7'1". It's not a 6'1" career role player sprinting full speed perpendicular to the path to the hoop throwing up a prayer from half court.
February 27th, 2023 at 2:10 AM ^
Exactly this. It was a low-percentage shot, but it was still an NBA 3 from a 7 footer (meaning the "contest" isn't quite as impactful) who can shoot and he was balanced.
I'd also add that the Brust bullshit contributed to Michigan losing a Big Ten title. It's crazy that between that shot and Morgan's layup against IU just rimming out Michigan was just two plays away from an onutright Big Ten title in what may have been the best Big Ten of the last 15 years (that IU team was stacked, MSU was standard MSU, Ohio State was loaded and an elite defense, Wisconsin was typical Wisconsin pain in the ass).
February 27th, 2023 at 3:10 AM ^
Brust's heave in 2013 was a perfect swish. It was actually a decent look based on the situation. He was able to get some momentum and step into the shot just inside halfcourt.
Gasser had the bank shot in 2011 that was just a total bullshit chuck. Michigan played great defense on that last possession and then he just throws up some garbage and it banks in.
February 27th, 2023 at 4:03 AM ^
You are correct that it was NOT a bank as I went back and watched it today a couple times after getting into an argument with a Wisconsin buddy. I remembered it as a bank too but that must have been Gasser's 2011 shot.
I disagree that it was a decent look (although that's subjective obviously). He had to turn and fire and it was a very difficult shot. It was a total prayer, a 3ish% shot that went in.
I also just went back to watch the Gasser shot now that I realize why I thought Brust's shot was a bank and I def disgree that we played great defense on that last possession. We doubled the guy that got the inbound and he passed out of it to an open Gasser. Stu tried to get over for a contest but it wasn't in time.
That said, Gasser rushed it and it was obviously waayyyyyy off, so much so that it banked in.
I guess after ten+ years (and a lot of bball success, including today) I feel good enough watching these again.
February 27th, 2023 at 7:07 AM ^
Decent look is subjective, yeah. Obviously it was a very low percentage shot but it felt like Michigan's defense should have been so much better. Mitch was standing under the basket for the entire play and iirc, caught the ball after it fell through the net. Seemed pointless.
I'll take your word on the Gasser shot. I watched it in person and still have not seen a replay to this day. All I remember is him flinging the ball like it was a hot potato which I guess is why I thought the defense was good
February 27th, 2023 at 9:51 AM ^
Their defense was decent trying to deny the ball vs Hunter’s shot. He had to gather and get his balance.
Our defense was basketball malpractice vs Brush’s shot.

Wasn't that what spawned the "death to backboards" thing around here for a while?
February 28th, 2023 at 9:33 AM ^
Yes, that was the impetus for death to backboards.
February 28th, 2023 at 2:16 PM ^
Thanks as this is the way I remember the Brust shot. If you practice this shot it is a good shot despite the length...probably about 20 to 30% in practice for a good to very good shooter.

i find this description to be disingenuous.

Maybe. I also remember one of the bug people banking in a 3-pointer at the end of regulation at Chrisler to beat us. If Hunter had missed, though, I would have thought about the two late-in-the-clock 3-pointers they banked in today. Or the chump who injured Reed by sliding his foot out to trip him under the basket. Gott Damn those Bug People.
[Edit] - Yeah, Gasser was the guy I was referring to. I was sitting down in the corner where he shot it from. It was a gut punch.

Unreal. That was the first Michigan game of any sport I ever went to. I wanna say I was like 8. I had to fight back tears.
February 27th, 2023 at 2:15 AM ^
It could be worse.
The first Michigan game of any sport I went to was welcome week of my freshman year in 2007. I had wondered "should I stay the whole time if it's a blowout? I imagine some team named Appalachian State isn't going to put up much of a fight against Chad Henne, Mike Hart, Jake Long, and Mario Manningham."
Sigh.

My first and only game so far was our loss to Maryland in Hoke's last year. It was awful and cold and drizzly all day. App State as the first game though sounds infinitely worse. Just terrible.

After 4 years of working sweaty outside gigs at my kids' high school festival, my husband and I graduated to working inside in the A/C with TVs on watching football as we counted money. Lucky us! We live in Ohio and were surrounded by Buckeyes as we watched that game-- and everyone knows we are UM fans. I really wanted to volunteer for sweaty outside duty again.

No. It's never over with those scumbags.
February 26th, 2023 at 11:03 PM ^
Hard to say that I would change anything, good or bad, that happened in the 2012-13 season prior to March Madness. Because say Michigan wins that game at Wisco, maybe we end up with a 3 seed instead of a 4 in the tournament, maybe we run into a better 1 seed than Kansas or a draw a worse matchup and don't make it all the way to the end.
Because hey, no matter how we ended up there, we were the best team in a year where there was no national champion (due to Louisville's shenanigans).

February 27th, 2023 at 6:23 AM ^
OTOH if the Josh Gasser shot in 2011 doesn't go in, maybe that team gets a 7 seed instead of 8 and doesn't have to play Duke in the second round.
February 27th, 2023 at 7:07 AM ^
True, but I was in Charlotte for those games and watching them rip UT's arms off and beat them about the head and face with them in the second half was one of the better experiences I have had at a Michigan game. The Duke game was also great until the end of course. Loved Morris floater, but Stu was wide open for the win in the corner. Still a great season, and one that really put Michigan back on the upward path.
