Beilein: "I know that what I should have done is retire at Michigan at that time and then re-evaluated."

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on January 12th, 2023 at 9:27 PM

“I know that what I should have done is retire at Michigan at that time (after the 2018-19 season) and then re-evaluated. With another group going pro and all the rule changes coming, NIL and the (transfer) portal, all that on the way, the timing was right to retire, then maybe look at being an assistant in the pros, and then entertain the idea of being (an NBA head coach). But I convinced myself and everybody else that I could (rebuild an NBA team) and the truth was, I couldn’t.”

Literally words from John Beilein himself (one month ago in an interview in The Athletic). Yet people keep listing losing Beilein as a failure of the AD.

In other interviews he's called leaving Michigan a "mistake" and he's repeatedly said that leaving had nothing to do with Michigan.

Yet there is this narrative, that Warde Manuel lost Beilein. As if he could've prevented the roster turnover and stopped guys from going pro, made coaches around the country stop cheating, halted NIL and the portal, and prevented NBA teams from coming after Beilein.

Bakich? 100% on Warde...but there is no way you can put Beilein on anyone at Michigan.

...just a reminder because just today 3 different posters have used Beilein as a reason to fire Warde (there are plenty...this isn't one of them, stop spreading lies).

The more I read this board, the more I realize people really don’t know as much as they think. We didn’t all grow up tweeting out every thought and action.  Because one chooses not to tweet what they are doing every moment of the day, the assumption should not be that they are doing nothing. I am in my mid 40s and I tweeting is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of.  I know I’m old, but I don’t get upset when grown adults don’t tweet.  I actually prefer it that way.

#1 Spoke to him at the Dierdorf-Brandstater dinner.

He loves what he is doing with the Pistons.  Looks ten years younger

than he did 5 years ago.

#2 Bakich is not on Warde. Bakich wants the CWS title.  He saw what Louisville did, with a regular season series and post-season regional there.

Clemson is doing the same, with an all out commitment to facilities et al, better recruiting area, weather, not having to play most games on the road, especially starting each season with multiple long trips, as well as the money.  There is zero indication from him that he would have stayed for more $.

Okay, but as you said, there's 1749380 other good reasons.

Glad to know this was Beilein's choice, but that doesn't make me want Warde away from this program ASAP any less.

Beilein left because of the AAU, entire recruiting scene. Having a cousin who was a team manager he flat out told me that the guy was super clean, rule follower and high school recruiting disgusted him. Kids and parents demand playing time, some want incentive$ under the table and he wouldn't coach like that. AAU stars were already taken and nudged where they had to go. It was harder and harder to find that gem. He was burnt out from that. Loved coaching enough to not just quit.

I don't understand the Warde criticism on this board either.  I just don't see where he's flubbed enough to warrant the vitriol he gets.  I don't think anything Warde could have done would have kept Beilein from going to the NBA when he did.  As for Bakich . . . [I see others have made the point earlier].  JH (football) has one eye on the NFL.  How is that Warde's fault?  JH (basketball) has been to the tournament each year he's been here sans covid and as far as the Sweet Sixteen both times.  This is his first down year.  Why the short leash as to Juwan and the concomitant dissatisfaction toward Warde?  As for the other sports, hasn't Michigan finished near the top of the Directors' (or similar) Cup in every year he's been here?

Full disclosure: I worked with Warde a little when I was at UM's Office of Minority Affairs (the name has since changed).  Warde used to give presentations to the youths who came through the summer program--mostly kids from demogragraphics underrepresented in higher education--about the importance of striving to succeed and going to school.  This was before he was ever an administrator.  He was recently graduated from college himself.  At the time I thought he was a bit arrogant and aloof--perhaps from his perceived standing as a former football player for Bo.  Anyway, I bring this up to point out I'm not a mindless fan of Warde and I still don't understand the criticism he gets.

Absurd excuses for Warde continue. Wtf is it with the love affair this board has for the guy? Fact is, Beilein’s retirement was unexpected. It hit everyone by surprise. If he was truly set on leaving, Warde should have been in good enough communication to make plans. But the AD found out at the same time the rest of us did, i.e. a month after coaching change season. There were very few options on the table at that point, so Warde went with a popular guy who would please the fanbase—but also a guy with ZERO head coaching experience. And it shows. Beilein knew how important it is in the college game to develop and coach a point guard well. Howard has shown himself to be a star gazer and is clueless at the position. Honestly fuck Warde, the guy is a clueless lout who takes the easiest road at every turn and has done nothing but harm to the football and basketball programs.

I think JH is better suited for the pros, and JB better suited for college. Maybe the wrong guy went to the Cavaliers and the wrong guy went to Michigan. I'm glad we got Juwan but the team is really struggling right now. And it's disappointing because they're playing somewhat decently well...they're just not winning and closing out games. I would love to see JB come back and take up the Phil Martelli role. I think the team would really thrive under both coaches.

I think the issue is more that a competent AD would've been checking in with him on a regular basis, sensed the move coming, and been ready to go with an experienced replacement.

I miss Beilein so much. I wish he never left and he at least went a couple more years and picked someone to succeed him and he was still involved with the team somehow.

Neither Bakich nor Beilein had anything to do with Warde. Warde fucked up the Mel situation and the current Harbaugh situation and thats it, but thats enough to say fuck him, time for a new AD.

Warde messed up on Mel. Bakich got a better deal at Clemson and it supports that program more than we do.  Beilein wanted to try the NBA and now regrets it. Harbaugh is on short lists for NFL. His agent is making calls around the league either for leverage on better deal terms or because Jim has told him he would leave for right deal.  There is nothing you can do to stop people from leaving a job short of them owning the place they are working.  Buyouts are just that and money can come from anywhere to make those go away or be easier to digest if they make a deal to make payments in some other way than just a huge lump sum and likely it comes from pro owners or from big boosters at a program desperate.  Even if we were to lock all our assistant coaches into contracts when push comes to shove even their buyouts or contracts can and will renegotiated. Look at any business and this is the case.  The fact is if the coaches want to be at Michigan they will stay at Michigan.

I don’t know for certain one way or another whether Warde is or isn’t doing his job. I’m not an insider at the University or Dept of Athletics. Moreover, those who do know more than I do because of their proximity to them seem to have serious disagreements on the subject.

But what I do have are observations. MGrowOld is correct in noting that Santa Ono’s decision to step in (which might have been at Warde’s request, after all) is not a good sign that the person in charge (Warde) is in control of events or the process. Events are never fully in anyone’s control, but the process should be - that is literally Warde’s job. We all joked about Hackett’s “swim lanes,” but it was a signal that he had a process and was following it.

I suspect that Ono is going to have his own decision to make soon. Again, based on my observations only, I’m a lot more confident in that one - whatever it is - than anything I’ve seen from Warde to date.

You know who has a personal axe to grind against Warde Manuel when they blame him for Beilein and Backich. At least w/ Backich he could've just said, "fuck it, here's 1.1M Eric, I can't take it with me." But what does that do to the rest of the coaches salaries? KBA get 1.2M? How about Nuarto and Tholl who actually coaches sports that fills up the arenas? That's not repsonsible management.

Pearson, sure. That's on him. And the anti-NIL thing is a bridge too far back to 1990 (although I agree that that one booster's 503c and the NIL money should not run around the AD).

You pay coaches comparable to the the team they coach. If baseball coaches are getting that kinda money and your coach deserves it, thats what you pay if it helps retain them. If you have to pay 1.2M to keep KBA because that is what top WBB coaches are getting paid, then you do it. You don't say if baseball coach gete 1.1 then WBB coach gets the same or comparable because that is not how it works.

Obviously the quote doesn't mention Beilein having any issues with Warde.  But, It also doesn't say Warde effectively supported Beilein.  Regardless, given Beilein, I wouldn't expect him to say anything negative about Warde.  If he felt effectively supported, Beilein might say something positive, but nothing should be read into lack of such a statement.

In short, the quote doesn't shed any light on whether Warde was supporting Beilein to an extent to be expected.  Could be that Beilein leaves no matter what or it could be Beilein was aware Warde wasn't going to give him the support he needed to navigate through the issues.

Isn't speculation great?   Its like a black sheet of paper and you can do whatever you want with it....

So the assumption is that Santa 'had' to step in to save Warde from losing Jim to the NFL because Warde wasn't doing his job.

What if, Warde and Jim were having a great conversation and were close to having the agreement that most of us are hoping they come to.... and Jim says, "that's all great and I'm glad you're willing to work with me on this, but how do I know that the University is going to go along with what we're discussing?"  So Warde asks Santa to join the conversation to assure Jim that Santa and Warde are on the same page.

Isn't it just as possible??

Red is Blue

Anything is possible, but under the scenario you laid out, it seems much more likely that Warde checks with Santa on the side and reports back to Harbaugh that the University supports.

Btw, it also seems unlikely that Warde is having such a conversation without full knowledge that the University will support such a deal or without knowing how far the University is willing to go.

Or maybe it's more likely that Santa, Warde and Harbaugh teamed up to put this out there because some know-nothing "best friend of Jim" is spouting off and undermining everyone's confidence in the program. Anson back-pedaled on Twitter last night faster than Neon Deion in his hey day. Also Sam Webb came out with an apology for not addressing a spurious anonymous comment on his site that got picked up as gospel truth.

How do I know this is true? Keith Jackson and Bo Schembechler both tweeted about it last night.

I know it isn't normal - but Juwan Howard should call up Beilein and ask for a bit of help. He is terribly inconsistent. And coupled with his issues at Wisconsin, missing the tournament this year, and lack of player development is putting him on a poor path.

I don't think it's entirely on Warde, but perhaps passively. If those were concerns that your current coach has, they'll be concerns for any successor as well. It's not like those issues were idiosyncratic to Beilein. I'd hope the AD is helping our coaches navigate a changing athletics environment and giving them resources to do it the right way.

"“I know that what I should have done is retire at Michigan at that time (after the 2018-19 season) and then re-evaluated."

Well, duh. Beilein was a tremendous coach here—perhaps the best ever at U-M—and if he'd retired as U-M coach and had given the AD enough time to do the kind of search that should have been done, he would have retired as a legit campus hero.

Maybe he's the legend already, but anybody could have told him that jumping immediately to a shitty franchise in the NBA was a stupid decision.
