Thoughts on the new Overtime rules?

Submitted by M-Dog on October 23rd, 2021 at 5:07 PM

Illinois just beat Penn State in nine overtimes.

It was fun as hell, but it is not sustainable if we are going to get many games like this.

The new overtime rules where you have to go for two as your one-play "drive" after 2 OTs remove too many of the variables that can end the game:  Multiple plays per drive, distance from the goal line, and potential touchdown / extra point / field goal points differential.

Under the new rules those variables are gone by the third OT:  both teams have the same number of plays (one), from the exact same 3-yard distance from the goal line, for the exact same score.

If you have two high-scoring teams, or two low-scoring teams (like today), you can't get them off the field.

Thoughts on this or a better system?  Or just keep it the way it was?

I thought it was embarrassing for both offenses. To avoid the stoppages associated with moving back and forth, I think a good minimal fix would be to have each OT consist of plays from the 3 yard line until you get two different results, followed by the other team getting the chance to do it. The  winner would be the team who needs the fewest plays to score or, alternatively, the team who scored the most plays in a row.

Even though this is better than what we just watched, it's still obviously a terrible system, so they should just go back to the old way.

This is a really good and novel idea.  Kind of like golf.  Fewest strokes win.  And obviously if teams are in this ridiculous position it is not unreasonable to declare the winner as the team that screws up the least / is the most efficient since neither team demonstrated much efficiency in regulation.

Why not just flip a coin?  Seems like the two-point conversion rule will lead to undeserved wins.  The old way was certainly better for fans but probably not for the players, given all the extra wear and tear from potential multiple overtimes.

Whoever designed the new OT rules must have missed the unit on permutations and probabilities in middle school. These games are going to last longer.

I don’t like starting the overtime series at the 25.  I always thought 35 would be better.  In FG territory if you have a good kicker, if not, better at least get a 1st down.

2pt each play after 2 ot’s. Not a fan either.  It’s the same as penalty kicks as another poster mentioned.  Just not my thing.  Then again I’d still prefer a traditional ot 15 minutes of regulation play, kick it off and it’s up to you to win the game sudden death OT.  Or one possession each minimum..

I don't see anything wrong with declaring a tie at some point.

How about 2 regular 25 yd OT's, a 3rd where you have to go for two. After that, call it a draw.

Neither PSU nor Illinois deserved to win today, that's for damn sure. They missed 10 consecutive 2 point attempts. Damn.

Don’t like it. At very least, they should’ve kept 3OT to regular play but compulsory 2-pt try after TD. THEN you can do this stupid 2PT conversion contest.

Ridiculous.  Takes all kinds of meaningful dimensions out of the game, special teams, deep throws/medium passing game.  Just compresses everything into a video game.  What's wrong with a tie?

Penn State has the top 2022 class so far in the big ten. Michigan doesn’t have as many 4 stars like they usually do. Any chance we can nab some penn state commits?

You hate to see it. A 24-point favorite flailing away in OT 10 times from the 3 yard in front of the home folk. Both teams had the same opportunity so it was a fair and square loss for the Nits that can only help Michigan. When we go up there fan noise is likely to be a little less loud. And our chances of crapping all over the Nits for a better bowl game have been substantially increased.

Personally I don't like OT rules that are utterly different from the rest of the game. PKs/penalty shots are exciting, but really don't resemble the games in a meaningful way.

This 2-pt conversion rule is similar.

If player safety is the concern, let there be ties at some point. Much better than silly OT shenanigans, IMO.

That said, that PSU-ILL game was madness. And fun. Sayonara PSU!

FWIW, soccer only resorts to penalties in single-round knockout formats.

I'd be perfectly happy to have some (even moderately silly) OT rule for playoff and conference championship games and let regular season games end in ties. Does anyone here think a tie wouldn't have been a fair result from this game?

They start it too early...I think they should start it after the 4th OT period.

That means each team has started the OT period first, two times.

4 quarters, 4 OT periods.

After that, then this PK crap is fine.

Oh...and for the 4 OT periods, start from the 35. Work your way into FG range.

I think just starting further back will prevent all these OT periods.

After reading through the comments it appears I’m in the minority but I liked it as a fan. One play to win the game was excellent.  Totally added to the excitement.

Is it fair? Absolutely. I’d give my left nut for one play to beat Ohio State from the three yard line.

Loved it. If you can’t win in 60 minutes and two overtime periods, might as well settle it with a coin flip. Two point conversion attempts are an acceptable alternative to that.

1st and 2nd OT should be what they are. 3rd and 4th should've only had the change of a mandatory 2 pt try following touchdowns. 5th OT could've gone to the nonsense of what we have now.

Flipped to it at OT 8 I think, 16-16. Thought why is Illinois going for 2? Their kicker hurt? They got 2 and I pump the fist thinking the game was over. I was so confused lol. Hate it but loved the outcome.

The original system which sometimes ended up in 5.5 hour football games needed to be replaced and was with mandatory 2pt tries after 3 ot’s. This was silly. Too many dumb little things can happen in the span of just 3 yards and one play tries. Felt kind of like penalty kicks.

I’m very much against any overtime that changes the way a normal game would be. I wouldn’t be opposed to a 10 minute overtime and play the whole way through. If it is still tied, then overtime continues in the same spot it ended, but sudden death at that point.

It first I liked it and then it quickly showed how absurd this system could be when it got to 9 OTs entirely due to ineptitude. I think they broke a system that worked fine before because they didn't like the tail of the bell curve where they'd get 5+ OT games. The old system was fine or if you don't like those long games there are better ways to curtail them

I wish college would do a 10 minute OT like the pros.  If it's still tied after that, go to this "2-point shootout."  I do NOT want any ties.

I suppose it's just a nomenclature thing, but calling each pair of 2-point conversions "an overtime" is a bit of a stretch.  Thus we get to 9 overtimes with 7 of them having an aggregate score of 4-2.

I didn't actually watch today's game (LUCKY ME), but I was tracking the score on my phone at the end and I had absolutely no idea what to make of the score updates I was seeing ("wait, it was 16-16 through 5 OTs, and now it's 18-18 through 7 OTs, what????").  I honestly thought the scoreboard app was just broken, ha ha.

This is equivelent to penalty kick for soccer and shootout for hockey, except that it is much less likely for a football game to reach this stage.

Call me old fashioned, but I wouldn't mind if we went back to a system where there are ties at the end of a standard 15 minute OT quarter similar to the NFL except with a guaranteed possession for each team, no matter if the team with the ball first scores a TD.  It would allow for another differentiator for the playoff committee to evaluate so that you could use ties to determine the quality of a team's record.

If we had to change from what we already have, I would go back to the previous system but move back the possession starting position to the 40 yard line to allow for the entire playbook to be open,  including vertical passing and long field goals.

Settle it at the 10 by kicking off of a tee, simple.   But the opposing coach gets to choose who kicks for you.   Some backup C 5’11” and 310# who’s never kicked a ball in his life gets to be the hero.

wouldn’t be more absurd than what we witnessed today.
