What would get you back on the Harbaugh bandwagon?

Assuming that you want Jim Harbaugh fired (I realize that this isn't everyone) and assuming that he returns, what would make you change your mind about wanting a new coach? Would going 7-5 next year but seeming to be on an upswing do it? How about a 9-3 season with a blowout loss to OSU? Does Michigan need to go 12-0, riding to victory over a road of bones, to get you back in Harbaugh's camp? I'm interested to know what you see as necessary next season for Harbaugh to show that he should stay in AA.

1. A win against OSU.

2. Also, winning a game you "shouldn't win" or where you're not favored, or not favored by a lot (think Iowa on the road).

3. Firing Don Brown.

4. Adapting your scheme to your players on both sides of the ball.

5. To #4, seeing a cohesive offensive system that can run tempo when needed and better clock management that puts the ball in the hands of your best skill position players and lets them play.

6. Competent quarterbacking.

1.  Harbaugh doesn't win games verses top 10 ranked teams

2.  Harbaugh hasn't won any games he shouldn't have won in 6 years...your really think this will change?

3.  After the second blowout loss vs your rival every head coach in the world would fire somebody ... except Harbaugh

4.  How many times have you seen Harbaugh adapt vs running up the middle into a stacked box over and over and over and over and over...Harbaugh doesn't adapt

5.  Harbaugh hasn't had clock management in 6 years...you believe this can change?

6.  Quarterbacks have regressed under Harbaugh for 5 years...what will change?

Some of Bo's best seasons came after his worst--but Bo usually had to shake things up to get there. I need to see Harbaugh both shaking things up and making some serious improvements over the last couple of years.

Beat OSU. Can’t possibly get any simpler than that.

Develop a game changer at QB would be nice too. You can’t win in today’s game with a game manager. The days of guys like AJ McCarron winning national titles as a starting QB are over.

Good question. It would take a lot.

He would need to start with a press conference accepting full responsibility for the state of the program, identifying the weaknesses in the program, and explaining his plan to fix them. He would need to accept a substantial pay cut and admit that he has failed so far. Then he would need to share his plan to get things back on track including a revamped staff.

Specifically he would need to explain how he’s going to develop a championship QB, give the offense a clear identity, and establish a top tier running game every year that leads to our talented RBs maximizing their potential and becoming early draft picks.

On defense, he would need to hire a proven staff and lay out a plan to deal with the recruiting deficiencies that have left gaping holes in the roster.

He would also have to clarify what caused his passion to fizzle and where his sideline enthusiasm has gone. New coaches, support staff, and a clear recruiting plan that are all geared to beating OSU, winning the B1G and getting to the playoff.

Only then would I be feeling comfortable going into a season in which he would need to:

- Develop a QB and passing game that put the QB in the Heisman conversation.
- Make our skill players look as talented as they are and use the copious speed we have on the roster on offense.
- Develop a first or second round RB.
- Have a top 12 offense.
- Have a defense that produces draft picks from all three levels and is geared to slow the dominant offenses of our era.
- Beat OSU and win the B1G

If he does all that, I will happily support him for another year.

Love all of this and I 100% agree with your first comment around the press conference. I've been saying for awhile now that I'd feel a lot better if we got some public acknowledgement that Harbaugh sees and understands that the last few years have been unacceptable. He doesn't need to and I don't want him to blame specific players but I need to hear from him that the current trajectory is not acceptable and what he plans to do to change that. I really don't think it's too much to ask.

Not correct...  Any 'leak', 'major' or otherwise, is controllable.  If you mean to say 'catastrophic breach', then yeah, not recovering from that...

I do believe that Harbaugh's program has several 'major' leaks, but is not yet catastrophically breached.  He may be able to recover it to a seaworthy state, able to get back home under its own power, but it will need substantial, and ongoing, repairs for the next many years.  A significant overhaul and modernization effort may extend its service life, otherwise decommissioning should be strongly considered.

No.  I don't believe he has it in him.  The 2016 version did, but not this current version.

Nonetheless, it appears that he's likely to get a chance at it, so I'll support that chance 100% if it becomes reality.  I mean, there's no sense in actively rooting against the program for selfish reasons.  We can advocate for change while still supporting the team and hoping it all works out...

Coordinator hires that lead to dramatic improvement on both sides of the ball and a victory over Ohio State.

If he can’t beat Ohio State in 7 years, there’s no evidence he will ever have a proof of concept this can work.

The most shocking aspect of Jim Harbaugh's tenure at Michigan, beyond the gross negligence in not schematically employing the physical skills of individuals well, is the stunning lack of composure and resilience of his teams. "The spot" was bad-the reason the spot came into play is why the game was lost. His teams, in the face of the slightest adversity, have wilted...time after time after time. This is telling and this is unforgivable because this is all about coaching. For crying out loud-teaching your kids to compete is what the whole athletic endeavor is about...this is the most basic aspect of this job and if you cannot do this then you should not be in this position. These young men deserve a better chance of success than they are being given. Six years is a long time to be allowed to underperform-a lot of enabling going on here.

I think most of us agree that the answer for Michigan football is likely a head coaching change. But, it appears as though he’ll be retained/extended. Nobody can reasonably expect a monumental turnaround in one year. Beating OSU, winning the B1G, CFP birth, etc. I think these should be immediate goals for 2022 and beyond, meaning 2021 might be uninspiring. The only way this fan base is going to regain any level of excitement for Jim Harbaugh is him showing us he can do things he otherwise hasn’t at Michigan. Win as an underdog, preferably on the road. Develop a damn quarterback.... I think we need to see a Michigan offense with a quarterback as the clear best player. Applying more pressure on the opposing defenses by showing a competent ability to use tempo and a developed two minute offense. Finally, I think he needs to exceed expectations and win 11 games. I don’t so much care who the wins/losses are against. 8-10 wins seems like the ceiling next year, but (assuming it includes a loss to OSU) nobody’s getting excited or recommitting to Harbaugh with that result. In all honesty, I’d expect a 7-9 win season next year with little to no excitement and an even stronger “fire Harbaugh” chorus heading into 2022.

If I saw a real commitment to actually trying to play offense, I'd probably get back on board almost regardless of record because at least then there would be hope. I doubt even that very low bar will be cleared.

1. A competent offense with intelligent play calling

2. Efficient clock management

3. The end of the mass transfers of players in line to contribute

4. A team that looks as though it wants to compete

Go 11-1 and beat OSU, absolute stud at QB position who has 2-3 years left after next year, young players look great so it’s not a “flash in the on” type year, playoff and be competitive,  top 4 recruiting class 2022

So nothing.  Dunno if anyone else on the planet can do that either, but that’s what we brought him here to do.

I don’t see how anyone thinks Harbaugh could realistically turn this thing around. He would have to bring in Moorehead and convince Gattis to stay and turn those two loose. Just be hands off and let them do their thing. Clean house on defense. Even if he does all that Michigan is sorely lacking in key spots on defense and simply doesn’t have the players to compete. More likely he pulls a Dantini and shuffles the deck chairs because he is so stubborn he thinks he can fix things. 3-9 is more likely next season than any sort of actual progress.

Nothing short of beating OSU and winning the conference would do at this point. Unfortunately Harbaugh will NEVER do either at Michigan.  He’ll be lucky to win 7 games next year.

Nothing. If Harbaugh is back he could probably get us back to being a 8-10 win a season type team. But I don't think he will be beating OSU anytime soon. I'm not really sure if a new younger coach could do any better. We would need a top notch coach like Urbz with warts and all to get to the next level.

You are asking what it would take to get me back on the Harbaugh train and 2 of your 3 options are:

1.)  7-5 season that looks promising

Or.

2.) 9-3 season with a blowout loss to OSU??

I need to see the old Jim again.  Tired, sad Jim sucked the life out of my Saturdays.  Aside from that, next season HAS to be a winning season, and I don't want to see our players losing faith and giving up like they did this year.  That falls directly on leadership.  I think these are pretty reasonable conditions.

If he launched a marketing plan / team built around maximizing player revenue from NIL, I would be on board.

His language needs to be about NIL and advocating for players in every interaction with the media.  It's the only way we bridge the talent gap from the top tier.  Need to make JJ McCarthy a millionaire above the table.

The star qb at Michigan should be bringing in mid six figures easy if we do this right.

A team that plays with a sense of urgency, pride, and resilience in the face of adversity and puts up a fight for 60 minutes. No more folding like a cheap lawn chair the instant things start going against them.

A coaching staff that demonstrates awareness of situational football, shows some confidence and plays to win (e.g. not running the ball into stacked lines just to run clock, throwing for a first down when leading late) rather than playing not to lose (e.g. being afraid to throw for a game-ending first down only to give the ball back and lose anyway on a last possession), using good judgement with respect to play selection and clock management, teaching fundamentals (or recruit guys that already have them), recruit guys with high football IQ and never-say-die attitude, and actually teach the team how to actually execute plays under pressure. Champions of practice doesn’t count. Gotta come up with the goods against solid opponents when games are on the line. Basically just play the way USC usually does when they make the Rose Bowl.

Of course, if this staff could do this consistently we probably would have seen it by now anyway. Though I am not optimistic, I don’t see any potential coaches that would necessarily do any better so long as the culture is held back by the cult of Bo.

Progress.
1. Clean house. Moorhead to come and help out Gattis. Defensive side of the ball needs an exorcism. Hire the best defensive coordinator out there and surrounded him with the best staff possible.

2. Improve every game every year. I expect Michigan to beat MSU. No excuses. Michigan should be in every game but maybe one.

3. Closing the gap with OSU. Right now, OSU has top talent, so I can’t expect Michigan to beat them in 2021. However, I want to see the games closer and not allowing them to score 40-60 points on us. Michigan, like other programs, should be able to sell themselves easily to recruits.

I know this seems like a wishlist, but these are realistic goals that Harbaugh and his staff can achieve to get me back on the bandwagon.
