11/14/2020 – Michigan 11, Wisconsin 49 – 1-3 Big Ten

I'm at the point where literally everything that happens with Michigan football is shoveled into my confirmation bias. No matter the specific configuration of any failure, it's Jim Harbaugh's responsibility because he presides over a hellish, roiling chaos.

The cornerbacks have 5.5 limbs between them? Well, Michigan's recruiting operation is infamously disorganized. Try to block a punt and give Wisconsin the equivalent of a turnover? Chris Partridge left Michigan so he could work under Lane Kiffin and DJ Durkin. DJ Durkin! (Who Jim Harbaugh hired before his incompetence got a kid killed; instead his incompetence only led to one of three complete ass-beatings Harbaugh has suffered at OSU's hands.) Starting quarterback has turned into a pumpkin? Dylan McCaffrey is still at Michigan. Instead of staying on a football team and having a very good chance to get significant playing time before a transfer he decided to leave the team but not the school.

This culminated in what I admit is a silly fury indeed. What is the Harbaugh equivalent of the camera cutting to Brady Hoke clapping uselessly after several ogres have dismembered our one true prince? Well, it's above: mask boner. I have reached the point where any shot of a Michigan coach engenders eyerolling because not one of them is ever wearing a mask correctly.

It goes over your nose! And if you put a headset mic under it you may as well not wear one at all!

The head coach of the team that just missed two games because of COVID understands that sound will pass through fabric. He's also addressed the fogging issue:

To me, everything must be brought back to the point that this program is failed and will not recover and we must start over again, so the mask is a symbol, man, of why Wisconsin methodically atomized Michigan on Saturday.

You could pick many other symbols, like Michigan going to the shotgun from the half-yard line and getting stuffed, immediately followed by Wisconsin getting off their one-yard-line with a four-yard QB sneak. That would also be a good symbol of why Michigan is bad at football and all the coaches must be put on a mission to Alpha Centauri. (Warde: it's not a firing! It's a promotion.)

You could pick a flailing cornerback trying to play man coverage he could not. You could pick a run game that is coming off consecutive rushing rutgers. You could pick the five offsides against Indiana, or losing to an MSU team that's headed for 1-7, or the various damning records starting with 0 and ending with a number between 6 and 12. These are all good.

I'm sticking with the masks. This is my symbol. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Who's Got It Better Than Us(?) Of The Week

Nothing.

Honorable mention: No.

imageMARCUS HALL EPIC DOUBLE BIRD OF THE WEEK.

Michigan's first offensive play was a ball into Nick Eubanks's face mask that ended up being intercepted, and that rather set the tone.

Honorable mention: The rest of the game.

OFFENSE

There goes that. Joe Milton imploded, with the assistance of his OL and WR, sure. But his second throw was directly into a linebacker's chest. He averaged 5 yards an attempt before being replaced by Cade McNamara. Whatever flickers of hope existed for the rest of the season depended on steady improvement from a guy with a high ceiling.

I'm not saying that's totally out the window since young players oscillate wildly, but it looks a lot further away today. And there's clearly no help coming from anyone else. As mentioned above, it looks incredibly bad that your #2 QB isn't playing football anywhere this fall because he doesn't want to be on your team.

At least they tried it. Running Joe Milton didn't help, because Michigan OL were getting dumped in the backfield. Evening numbers up in the box is only effective if you can actually block the numbers. Michigan got sat on. Nothing helps when your OL is getting whipped.

I don't think running Milton if and only if Ben Mason was in the backfield helped much.

You've seen this, right? Gun from the half yard line. FFS.

We've got an offense that doesn't do sensible manball things at sensible manball times and also is completely ineffective at getting to the perimeter.

404 takes not found. What else is there to say?

DEFENSE

Nobody knows what to do. Here is a veteran linebacker taking on a block and not funneling to his help:

Ross stops entirely so he can take on a block, and then gets sealed inside. This is a violation of Linebacker 101 from a guy with a season's worth of snaps under his belt, a week after he came in with a –5.5 in UFR. Ross and McGrone should be amongst your steadiest players. Instead they're running out of gaps and vacating zones on the regular.

Add it to the pile of evidence that this team is a holistically disorganized mess.

No, we shan't set an edge. Another game against a good running outfit, and another blizzard of easy yards off tackle when Michigan does not bother to contain the ball. This happened last year against Wisconsin—remember Jonathan Taylor zipping 75 yards untouched—and then against Ohio State; Mo Ibrahim did it in the Minnesota game.

This no doubt would have been better with Michigan's starting defensive ends, but those guys were around last year and trying to make up for interior issues. Michigan's original sin remains recruiting at DT and CB, all of which is entirely the staff's fault. They've failed to recruit sufficient numbers of DTs of any ranking.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Mmm. I suppose trying to block a punt was Michigan's best bet to make the score look respectable. It naturally ended with a penalty that extended Wisconsin's drive.

ELSEWHERE

Spencer Hall has written some items. One is a similar mask riff, proving that I am not alone in my insanity.

That is Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh’s mask protocol on Saturday night. Harbaugh has put on his headset first, then attempted to stretch the mask over the mouthpiece of that headset. The internet roundly agreed that Harbaugh’s approach made it look like his mask had a boner, and that putting the headset mic under the mask was incredibly dumb, given how other coaches have managed to communicate through masks. Harbaugh’s team had just 47 yards rushing on the night.

Across the field, Paul Chryst TAPED HIS MASK TO HIS FREAKING FACE.

He also talks about the whole Harbaugh thing later:

Harbaugh had done his job everywhere he’d been. He made Stanford great. He got the 49ers to a Super Bowl with a first-year starter at QB before he and San Francisco’s owners bickered into a separation. Harbaugh came to Michigan as nothing less than a guaranteed savior.

Then ... none of the good things happened. Michigan failed to appear in the Big Ten Championship, let alone the Playoff. They pulled good-to-great recruiting classes, but failed to capitalize. Michigan is 3-3 against Michigan State in Harbaugh’s tenure. They are 10-14 against ranked teams. Worst of all, they are 0-5 against Ohio State, and barring a miracle, will hit 0-6 with a thunderous noise of wailing and breaking glass.

Read & ease your confusion. Beginning at the first sentence:

I'm at the point where literally everything that happens with Michigan football is shoveled into my confirmation bias.

...

This culminated in what I admit is a silly fury indeed.

There are few clear unspeculative reasons for this season's coaching implosion, so it is just frustration being taken out on something silly.

EDIT: beating a dead horse -- too slow.

It's not just symbolic. The University of Michigan is a prestigious international institution, and the image it presents to the world matters, both to itself, its alumni base and the public. Forget the football for a moment: in the midst of an accelerating pandemic, we should at least be able to model safe and professional behavior in the midst of a global pandemic. Instead, on national TV no less, the coaches made us look petty, awkward and ignorant. It's like a lawyer showing up to court in his sweats. As an alum, I was embarrassed.

Forget the football for a moment? That's what every post in here I've made has been about. No one is defending his on field performance.

But you can take pride that Harbaugh's team has managed Covid as well as any team in the country. Presumably because he seems to understand where risk is present better than you do. Or you can focus on his sideline mask usage that has no impact on the team's Covid management but shows up on TV.

My interpretation of what you're saying is an admittance that you're shallow, i.e., appearances matter above all else. Now that's a Michigan Man. An embarrassing one but a common one.

A "mask" school? You may as well say Michigan is an "underwear" school. Literally everyone wears underwear, and literally every football coach on the sidelines is wearing a mask. It's basic professionalism. But Michigan is virtually the only coaching staff that can't figure out how to wear a mask correctly.

Masks have a very important role in everyday Covid management. Just not on the sidelines of NFL or NCAA games.

Chryst hot boxing the film room with his assistant coaches is probably more of an issue than being outdoors facing the field with no one in front of you while having a mask below your nose. Well, not probably. Definitely. The proof is in the pudding.

Improper mask wearing is everywhere, not just on the Michigan sideline. Many people only cover their chins or warm their necks with it.

It’s time for all the UM coaches to get together (maybe include MSU coaches) and make a mask wearing public service announcement.

As someone living in Korea, I still can't believe how seemingly everyone in the US wears the worst masks. Those gaiters fall down your face all the time. Cloth is not better than a well-made mask specifically made to be a mask. You can buy good K94 masks in Korea at any convenience store for about a dollar.

I dunno.  I live in one of the bluest Biden-loving cities in America (Chicago), and wearing masks is mostly optional.  And social distancing...well, just look at how well our Wolverine Mayor, Lori Lightfoot, handles social distancing (spoiler alert: not very!).  And the numbers in Chicago are not looking great.

Are all these Biden-loving super-spreaders science deniers?  Or are you so shallow to make character judgements on people you don't know based on who they voted for?

This is an erroneous, dangerous, and naive stereotype.  All your comment does is spread more ignorance and closed mindedness.  I can tell you there are people on both sides who take this virus seriously and also those who don’t.  There are people who say they take it seriously but yet still go to birthday parties, still go to restaurants, say they support the governor yet give fake names and numbers for contact tracing.  Please don’t be so moronic that you actually think 70M are doing everything wrong and 80M are doing everything right just based on who they voted for president.  Such narrow mindedness and divisiveness only makes things worse.  We need to stop thinking about everything as US VS. Them and stop drawing so many idiotic lines in the sand.  Time to come together people.

couldn't agree more with the confirmation bias discussion. when a team is losing and looks lazy and undisciplined, it's easy to find examples of that lazy lack of discipline.

we all know the masks don't ACTUALLY mean the difference between winning and losing, but man. self-discipline sure as hell does.

This is when you reset your hard drive to factory settings and start over. Michigan is a top-line processor that Harbaugh is using to run Windows 98.

You give someone the autonomy to run a program with a modern mindset, and it will work, as long as the coach has that mindset. I hope that the rumors about boosters trying to bring Urban Meyer are true, because while it will never happen, it shows that enough people are just done with the old school mentality. Bo never would have wanted Michigan to try and bask in his success if it would kill the program.

It was even Bo who said "no coach is bigger than Michigan." He was referring to himself.

I love the computer analogy. I'll tweak it a bit (maybe more than a bit) if I may. Michigan is machine launched with top of the line hardware and the most recent version of Windows. Everything worked great for a little while, but after 4 years or so, things start to fall apart. A few updates are skipped, cookies, viruses, and other junk build up, and your file system is a mess because the default download folder is Desktop, which never gets organized as you want and now new files stretch onto your second monitor. You could put a ton of time and effort into running every cleanup utility known to man to try to get it back to regular operating mode, but meanwhile your neighbor just south of you has kept theirs going and is now spending his time optimizing by buying the best parts money can buy from all over the world.

Seems like it's time to give up on that project and reset to factory settings. In the short term it will be painful since you'll lose the settings and programs you've installed, but in the long term it's the only way to have a usable computer. There's no guarantee you won't make the same mistakes on this version, but at least you have a chance to do better next time. And who knows, maybe your neighbor will get a bad upgrade that shorts out his computer and causes him to have to start over, giving you a chance to catch up.

Harbaugh has always had screws loose. The difference between this version of Harbaugh and previous versions are his assistants. He doesn't have anyone surrounding him that can prevent him from stumbling all over himself.  The last assistant that was willing and capable of standing toe to toe with Harbaugh was Jed but even he eventually ran.

Every good assistant gets as far away from Harbaugh as they can because he is unbearable to be around.  What we get left with are a crop of coaching misfits.

McCaffery saved his career by running away from Jim. Most of our previous assistants did also.

I'm not sure this is entirely fair.  At least, not on the defensive side.  Brown had been very good and has stuck around for 5 years so it seems Harbaugh doesn't annoy the defensive coaches enough to run them out of town unless you think it's Harbaugh that is the reason for Partridge leaving but I wonder how useful Partridge even was anymore since all his HS relationships in NJ had essentially timed out.

I think the good folks at Cumberland College are definitely looking forward to our upcoming game with OSU and finally getting out of this unfortunate piece of football history.

I think I might just be inured to the point where the hot takes on a replacement coach* will be far more irritating to me than the actual football being played.

* y’all realize I hope that we’re stuck with Harbaugh for at least another year if not more :(

It's moved past Rich Rod & Hoke levels at this point and THAT is saying something.

  • Rich Rod - at least it was a bowl game when the team officially gave up on the coaching staff and not a conference game in the middle of the season.
  • Hoke - for all of the ineptitude, the team always played hard and didn't give up.
  • Harbaugh - it has become complete ineptitude and the team quit in this game.

I have never played a down of organized football in my life. Thanks to this blog and the complete ineptitude of the coaching staff, real time I was recognizing what was happening on the field. That takes a special level of lack of preparedness and lack of capability.

On the third or fourth Wisconsin TD it was 3rd and 3 around the 8. Wisconsin lined up and I immediately knew they were going to run the mesh route Seth featured in neck sharpies this week. Yep. It was the underneath crossing route which Green was no where near and it went for a first down to the 3. Next play the RB walks in for a TD. Ineptitude on one play and lack of effort on the next.

On another play Wisconsin ran a basic counter and both Michigan linebackers and a safety were running away from the play. How could at least two, maybe 3, players not know their assignment on the same play? Before the play has even started that puts you down to 9 on 11.

Co-signed and was thinking the same thing.  Rich actually had a top 5 recruiting class lined up for 2011 until the rumors of his departure killed it.

And Hoke, as inept as he was, recruited well (other than QB) and had the team ALWAYS playing hard, especially against OSU.

They 100% quit on Saturday.  And if you want to really get sad, rewatch the team running out under the banner.  The people forced in the Bataan death march showed more enthusiasm.

November 16th, 2020 at 12:11 PM ^

It wasn't rumors of his departure that killed RichRod's Top 5 recruiting class. It was his team looking uncompetitive and the defense being a walking disaster.

I agree about Hoke. His teams always played hard. His coaches were just one step above their skill level. And his defense was so good it kept them in every game.

I don't think the players quit. I think they play hard. I also think not a single one of them believe they are being put in a position to succeed.

mGrowOld

November 16th, 2020 at 12:45 PM ^

I beg to differ on Rich and the quitting.   Late September, when they were 4-0, 5 star RB Dee Hart (remember him?) committed to Michigan giving us at that time the #1 class in the country.  When the losses started and the rumors started they started decommitting.

And go watch any of Wisconsin's TD runs and you'll see precious little effort made to stop them.  I'm not blaming them for it, thats on the HC, but they definitely quit.
