Stanford OT Devery Hamilton in the transfer portal (former commit in 2016 class)
Was a big loss at the time. He has started some games for Stanford. He'll be a grad transfer. I doubt he'll be coming to Michigan.
For those who think Michigan loses an inordinate number of transfers, Hamilton is the 11th Stanford player to enter the portal this month. That's got to hurt.

11 players in the portal from a school like Stanford is strange especially the number of players with starting experience. Has David Shaw told players he may be considering an NFL job?
Could this affect Michigan's recruitment of James Pogorelc or Myles Hinton? How many spots does Michigan have left in the 2020 class?
December 12th, 2019 at 6:34 PM ^
Shaw is an average coach at best and would not get an NFL job. He rode Harbaugh's coat tails. Harbaugh created that monster and Shaw slowly declined. What Harbaugh did at Stanford proves he can coach.
December 12th, 2019 at 6:40 PM ^
I think you are selling Shaw a bit short. Yeah Harbaugh built it, but the dude won a Rose Bowl and finished #3 in the country in his fifth season as head coach. This season (his 9th) was really his first significant step back.
December 12th, 2019 at 7:06 PM ^
Shaw won two Rose Bowls.
December 12th, 2019 at 8:08 PM ^
....big deal, that is only 2 more than Harbaugh!!!
December 12th, 2019 at 8:36 PM ^
This years Stanford’s team was mauled with injuries. 4 true freshmen started on the online...no team is winning with that
December 12th, 2019 at 6:45 PM ^
I think Shaw is more highly regarded than you give him credit for right now.
Another possibility is that coming off a 4-8 season, he may be advising some of his older players to seek another school in order to open up scholarships for his current 2020 class.
December 12th, 2019 at 9:10 PM ^
He’s done more at Stanford than Harbaugh has at Michigan.
December 12th, 2019 at 9:38 PM ^
Harbaugh took over a Stanford program that had been historically moribund. He left it a strong contender for Pac12 and national success when Shaw took over. Harbaugh came to Michigan when it had 4 losing seasons in the previous 7 years.
December 12th, 2019 at 10:14 PM ^
Ok but he’s done more at Stanford than Harbaugh has at Michigan. Shaw has and it can’t be disputed.
December 13th, 2019 at 1:47 AM ^
Can so!
December 13th, 2019 at 4:01 AM ^
Shaw started his climb a few thousand feet higher on the mountain because of Harbaugh. But I guess he did make it to the Rose Bowl... while Harbaugh was coaching in the Super Bowl.
December 13th, 2019 at 5:54 AM ^
Of course it can be disputed. Harbaugh started when Stanford was awful. Shaw inherited Harbaugh's top 10ish Stanford program. I don't know how maintaining a top 10ish program is 'doing more' than building one from scratch but you do you
December 13th, 2019 at 10:30 AM ^
By "done more" sure, he's won more games and more titles. But Larry Coker won more games (and a title) than Butch Davis at Miami, but Davis was the one who set monster that up. Shaw is better than Coker, but Stanford has been trending down for some time and I'd argue that one top-3 year was the "10-3 MSU in 2017" season where everything sorta goes your way and you have a Heisman Trophy RB who papers over a lot of issues you have. It doesn't feel sustainable.
December 13th, 2019 at 2:36 AM ^
I guess Ryan Day's also done more at Ohio State than Urban Meyer has the past 4 years.
December 12th, 2019 at 7:08 PM ^
Not saying I wouldn’t take Hinton, but he has really dropped on 247. Down to 202 overall. I think I remember he projected better at DT. If so, I would love to get him and maybe have him switch.
December 12th, 2019 at 10:03 PM ^
If I remember correctly, Myles wants to play offense, not defense.
December 13th, 2019 at 7:29 AM ^
I think you’re thinking of Chris, who was thought to have a higher upside on the offensive line, but wanted to play defense.
He’s also 6’7”, which you don’t see many inside guys that big due to leverage issues.

Can he play DT?
December 12th, 2019 at 6:33 PM ^
No, but two of the other Stanford transfers (Michael Williams and Jovon Swann) can. But I doubt you are going to find an upgrade over senior Mike Dwumfour and Carlo Kemp in the portal. The best hope for Michigan is Chris Hinton and Mazi Smith making sophomore leaps in improvement IMO.
December 12th, 2019 at 7:18 PM ^
Yep, that'll be the best M can do and there's reason for optimism at DT because that's two solid veterans and two potential star sophomores. Plus, there could be depth provided by guys like Jess Speight, Welschof, etc.
It's CB I'm far more worried about.
December 13th, 2019 at 12:19 AM ^
As you should be... because we have 1 CB coming back. A FS posing as a CB likely starting opposite him. And our class is likely going to have a guy that's 5'8" and good for the nickel and to stop the Sainstril/Giles Jackson's of the world...and a touted CB that runs a 4.67 and some people already think would make a better safety.
Unacceptable after the run of Lewis, Long, Hill and Thomas.
Pray to God one of these freshman that will redshirt this season will get a +12 ratings boost this offseason.
December 13th, 2019 at 9:42 AM ^
Carlo Kemp: 40 tackles, 2 sacks
Michael Williams: 24 tackles, 1 sack
Jovan Swann: 21 tackles, 4 sacks
Michael Dwumfour: 9 tackles, 0.5 sacks
December 12th, 2019 at 6:32 PM ^
Wonder if this is another situation where he simply can't get into a graduate program. Have to tip your hat to Stanford for that, I guess.
December 12th, 2019 at 6:37 PM ^
I don't think you have to be in a graduate program to stay for a 5th year at your original school. It's possible some of these kids want to start graduate school, but I don't think the 11 transfers are all for that reason. There is something else going on here.
December 12th, 2019 at 6:40 PM ^
Looks like he made the wrong decision
December 12th, 2019 at 6:40 PM ^
See yah
December 12th, 2019 at 8:05 PM ^
He should seriously consider coming here. I think Warriner could really help him. . .
December 12th, 2019 at 8:53 PM ^
Considering how devastating a loss to our OL it seemed to be when he flipped, his career didn’t really amount to much at Stanford. With rare exceptions, you just never know how high school kids will pan out, especially offensive linemen.
December 12th, 2019 at 9:50 PM ^
We had a major need at the time, but he wasn't rated super high, #255 nationally. That's about the same as Karsen Barnhart, the 4th highest ranked OL in our 2019 class.
December 12th, 2019 at 10:41 PM ^
Hold on fella,
The MGoBlog commenters told me Harbaugh and Michigan can't recruit tho...
December 12th, 2019 at 10:08 PM ^
Could’ve used him at the time but if he didn’t end up starting at Stanford towards the end, I doubt he’d be starting in AA either.
December 13th, 2019 at 10:01 AM ^
Agreed. Despite the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments at the time it doesn't look like we missed on much, does it.
December 13th, 2019 at 10:22 AM ^
He started the first 4 games this season before suffering an injury. He started half their games the season before.
December 13th, 2019 at 8:09 AM ^
Always a little smug when someone who spurned us transfers, though i do wish him success.
December 13th, 2019 at 9:31 AM ^
STANFORD, FUCKED!
December 14th, 2019 at 10:12 AM ^
Was there some angst btwn him and spinellis?
