mlive.com: Winovich explains 'little brother' comments aimed at MSU
Michigan's Chase Winovich explains 'little brother' comments aimed at MSU
"That's an interesting thing, because on one hand I'm moving on from it -- but on the other hand ... in my eyes, I didn't start the fight."
"If I go through any other week, and I've been interviewing with you guys for years, I'm not out here trying to call out teams in post-game interviews," Winovich said. "I don't like a lot of teams, but I'm not just going to pick a fight.
"But for them, they called us 'little sister' in the summer. They came there and tried their antics with the helmet. Obviously, you guys know how that went."
"It's almost like they wanted us to take the low road, and maybe I took the bait," Winovich said. "But I don't mean any harm from it. I'm just having fun. I think they took it a lot more serious than I did.
"But yeah, I'm moving on. I'm focusing on the Penn State game. That's the only thing that's on my mind."

What does he mean "they called us little sister in the summer"? Do they converse with players from other teams regularly? Or is he just referring to idiot fans?
October 29th, 2018 at 11:57 PM ^
The fans for sure but I believe he's referring to a comment made in the off season by LJ Scott.
October 30th, 2018 at 12:00 AM ^
Ah yes now I remember.
Ha.

It's all from the back and forth this past July.
Devin Bush, 7/11/18: "Little bros talking? They must be out of timeout now."
https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wo…
LJ Scott, 7/27/18: "I don't know, probably because they're our little sisters, I guess."

alright, I've kinda beaten this to death BUT -- aside from being a tad sexist -- THAT DOESNT EVEN MAKE SENSE.
It would actually be kind of a decent burn (albeit still somewhat sexist), to call us "big sister"
Because then it plays on what we say but flips the script...but what do I know.
October 30th, 2018 at 11:13 AM ^
I had to read this twice to understand that you meant that MSU's "little sister" comments didn't make sense (rather than saying Winovich's comments didn't make sense), but you're right. They not only employed a juvenile trope as an attempted burn, but they did it incorrectly. It's like having a tantrum at not being able to sit at the big kids' table, and reminding everyone in the process why they don't deserve to be there.
October 29th, 2018 at 11:58 PM ^
the article includes the following:
It was MSU running back LJ Scott, speaking during Big Ten Media Days in late July, who made the "little sister" comment in regard to Michigan. He spoke of a feeling of disrespect from the Michigan players and fanbase toward MSU.
October 29th, 2018 at 11:58 PM ^
Not fans, LJ Scott called us that this summer during Big Ten Media Days.
October 30th, 2018 at 9:06 AM ^
The fans chanted that during the last two years of Brady Hoke...when those games got waaaay out of hand.
October 29th, 2018 at 11:58 PM ^
LJ Scott, I think, posted it somewhere between moving violations and it got picked up by the media. Either that, or he was directly quoted.
October 30th, 2018 at 12:00 AM ^
LJ Scott referred to Michigan as "our little sisters" in the summer.

Tbh all these years I wanted the little brother meme to go away, but after this year's game, no. I want Michigan to own it. They're gonna use the chip on shoulder/disrespect thing anyway, so might as well make it worth their while.
We used to worry about Harbaugh/M not taking this rivalry seriously enough. After Devin, and the on field Paul celebration, I don't worry about that anymore.
October 30th, 2018 at 12:14 AM ^
It’s funny because it’s true.
October 30th, 2018 at 12:24 AM ^
You are right comrade, they will always be little brother (or sister or bitch) both on the field and in the classroom. They will always have a justified inferiority complex.
Be honest, outside of the state and the occasional success in sports, no one otherwise knows or cares about staee.
October 30th, 2018 at 6:41 AM ^
they're forever going to be known for producing osteopaths with a penchant for molestation
October 30th, 2018 at 1:39 PM ^
Don't forgot about their highly rated supply chain program! (just ignore the fact that there are like four supply chain programs in the country because why would a university have a supply chain program?)

I’m with you. They’re going to stack a whole variety pack of fucking chips on their shoulders no matter what we do, so fuck them. They can have their inferiority complex while we continue to put their dicks in the dirt.
October 30th, 2018 at 9:11 AM ^
Those chips can be quite salty, too.
October 30th, 2018 at 1:34 AM ^
Little brother need to be moved to kids table permanently
October 30th, 2018 at 12:35 AM ^
LJ Scott, Running Back, Michigan State
Vs. Michigan: 10 carries, 25 yards. 2.5 yard average, plus one more rush for zero yards negated due to personal foul on MSU.
Tell us more about your "little sister", Mr. Scott.
October 30th, 2018 at 8:51 AM ^
Are you sure that’s not his season totals?
October 30th, 2018 at 9:08 AM ^
Does a NFL team even draft this guy? He hasn't even cracked 1000 yards at MSU.
October 30th, 2018 at 9:14 AM ^
UDFA. Cut before Week 2 of the preseason. 17,552 moving violations, which are not ignored because Dontagneo cannot cover for him any more.
Spends the rest of his life taking public transportation.
October 30th, 2018 at 12:39 AM ^
No problem with the "Little Brother" as MSU has consistently earned the status. Whether it's the free chiropractic adjustments for Denard, the protecting of all manner of miscreants, Coach Ontario's scowl, Izzo's lying, former assistant coaches sexually assaulting (allegedly), academic sliding, Nerds being raged against, ski-masks being employed, steroid abusers being covered up (Bullough's first exposure to PED's was his NFL suspension, right?), Nassar being protected and a tone f'n deaf administration bent not on truth and reconciliation with the victims but of simply covering their asses and protecting the brand.
Little Brother does Little Brother f'n things. To hell with Michigan State. They are Little Brother and to hell with the apologists on here for Sparty who fear calling them who they really are.
October 30th, 2018 at 6:01 AM ^
Standing O! Hate their asses.
October 30th, 2018 at 12:44 AM ^
Nah, take the low road Chase.
It's funny how Ohio State and other schools call us scUM and little sister blah blah blah.
We are always under the national microscope. Every loss is the end of the world. The low blows come from everywhere.
Let's develop a chip Chase. Let's be the bad guy. Let's be the team you don't wanna play.
October 30th, 2018 at 12:58 AM ^
The only way to kill off the clowns using the scUM comment is to pound them in FB, Hoops, Hockey. Given the global academic ratings of these three schools, UM is head and shoulders above our "rivals"
October 30th, 2018 at 12:56 AM ^
The only thing I would have done differently at the field interview would be to have told the reporter than "little sis' kicked the crap out of
little bro'
October 30th, 2018 at 3:03 AM ^
He also said a year ago Penn State "took our lunch money," and that the team is looking to "take it back... with interest."
October 30th, 2018 at 3:29 AM ^
In the Monday press conference before his first UM game, Dantonio asked:
"How long are we going to be the little brother?"
It did not start with Hart after that game.
If Dantonio's strategy was to blow the ten point 4th quarter lead at home, so Hart would make the comment that seems to have motivated Sparty lo these many years, I guess it worked.
The answer, of course, is, you will be little brother until you grow up.
I am not holding my breath for that to happen.
October 30th, 2018 at 6:00 AM ^
MSU RBs Ringer and Caulcrick took their coach's lead and also talked trash about UM football players' arrogance and used the phrase "little brother" to do so the week before the game in the State News.
Hart was directly referencing these things, but you can't trust the media to ever point out that Hart was retaliating.
October 30th, 2018 at 8:35 AM ^
And here is perhaps my #1 pet peeve of Michigan football lore. (Or maybe it's #2 behind Brady was Henson's backup.)
It's beyond me how the whole world suddenly forgot that "little brother" was around long before Hart. I'm sick of its origin being attributed to Hart. We need to start a truth campaign.
October 30th, 2018 at 4:27 AM ^
They like to have that chip on their shoulder. We just need to keep beating them and their chip.
October 30th, 2018 at 8:19 AM ^
If they were my little brother, I would take their chip, lick it, and put it back on their shoulder.
October 30th, 2018 at 8:28 AM ^
Remember the wonderful American classic movie "Road Trip"? I would take said chip, stuff it down the front of my pants and let it absorb my body heat and place the chip as close to my little brother's face as I could... Then, politely ask my lil brother why his face smells like balls?
October 30th, 2018 at 5:50 AM ^
Little brother makes MSU so mad because it fits them like a glove. It's hilarious. It must suck to have an insult cut so deep
October 30th, 2018 at 6:37 AM ^
MSU fans and players have no right to be angry. They talked shit prior to the game and have been for a while. This is a rivalry. Welcome to it, Sparty. They are just angry they cannot talk shit. It’s super fun when their team wins this game, but when they lose, they act like crying babies who just got put to bed early. Fuck you, MSU. You people are trashy as hell and your football program is slowly going back to irrelevancy.
October 30th, 2018 at 8:58 AM ^
Isn't this what any fan base does when they lose to a rival?
October 30th, 2018 at 11:14 AM ^
Fuck Sparty. But I'm not clear on the "This is a rivalry. Welcome to it, Sparty." I guess you are talking about off the field shit. Because on the field, they are the one's who have treated it more like a rivalry. Had we matched that intensity, Dantoni probably would not have 8 wins. Fortunately, this won't be a problem any more.
October 30th, 2018 at 1:54 PM ^
Those 8 wins had nothing to do with "intensity" or them wanting it more. It had to do with the fact that they had better football teams while we had bad teams under RichRod and Hoke. Simple as that.
October 31st, 2018 at 12:47 AM ^
^^^ Danantonii went 6-1 against Hoke and Rodriguez.... Congrats. He's 2-3 vs Carr/Harbaugh and frankly could just as easily be 1-4 or even 0-5.
To further this point, it's not like Lloyd Carr had the psychological edge v MSU before Dontini, he just coached against John LLLL Smith and Bobby fucking Williams. You'd have to go to Nick Saban vs Carr from 95-99 for the last stretch in the rivalry that was this competitive, even then Michigan had their share of blowouts.
October 30th, 2018 at 7:51 AM ^
Like many things said in rivalries, "little brother" requires zero explanation, in my opinion.
As I like to remind people, it's not just about the football, it's about the mentality of the program, school and even the fanbase, and even in recent times where we didn't do so well in this game, they couldn't help but be "little brother" even in victory.
October 30th, 2018 at 9:27 AM ^
The little sister thing is just lazy and lacks creativity. Just like Scott's running in that game.
October 30th, 2018 at 9:50 AM ^
It's like everything State does. They can't come up with their own ways to make fun of their rival, they just have to change something we do and call it clever. Those bumper stickers that said "U Call it Maize We Call it Corn." The "You Off" shirts. "Little sister." "Smash right through that line of blue." They have absolutely no way of uplifting themselves without ripping off or tearing down U-M.
October 30th, 2018 at 11:11 AM ^
Right? The only original thing they've ever done is harbor a serial pedophile.
Oh, wait... That's a copy-cat effort, also...
October 30th, 2018 at 11:12 AM ^
The insults that hurt the most are the ones that are based on truths. Chase did nothing wrong. They want to vilify our team and fan base no matter what is said. Both our team and fan base has been silent for the most part in the Harbaugh era, yet they still cry.
It’s time to own it. Run with it. Mork will use anything he can to make the chip they have bigger and saltier. Who cares if we add to it. It will be there no matter what.
October 30th, 2018 at 12:07 PM ^
That fact that they would call us "little sister" as a response is itself an incredibly little-brother thing to do.
"You're just a little brother."
"Well, you're a little . . . sister! So there!"
October 30th, 2018 at 12:08 PM ^
I've never been a fan of givng the opponent bulletin board material, and I really don't like players getting into it in the media.
HOWEVA' the little brother thing is such a perfect metaphor for the two programs, and it pisses them off so deeply, and they object to it so violently, that I am 100% in favor of it now. Keep it going. It has been tough to use it much lately, given our recent struggles, but now that MSU football is back in the shallow end of the pool where they belong, we should continue to beat that drum until Mork's head explodes.
