Taco Charlton to SDE?
February 7th, 2014 at 10:13 PM ^
Taco has the kind of frame where he could slide down if he put on some weight. It wouldn't be terribly surprising to see him play snaps at either WDE or SDE, or both.
February 7th, 2014 at 10:19 PM ^
Yeah, the fact that he was about 269 as a freshman indicates that he'll be plenty heavy enough to play SDE, but he's athletic enough to still flip to the weakside if necessary. He should instantly be our most athletic SDE if true.

Is it just me Magnus or did you argue with me last summer that he was not an SDE when I argued for us to move him there? Maybe it was someone else...or at least others too, but I recall you giving me some flack for thinking this last year saying he wasn't strong enough to hold down doubles and stand up to run blocking. You thought he was more of a fast-twitch, explosive pass rusher off the edge and more suited for LDE. No biggie...but I've always thought SDE was his eventually landing spot. Although I'm still hopeful Wormley can hold down the SDE spot too.

I'm not sure. I certainly didn't think he was capable of playing SDE as a freshman, because the technique wasn't there. Here's what I said on my commitment post:
I imagine he will likely start out at weakside end at Michigan, but he could very well grow into a strongside end by the time his career is over.

Gotcha, maybe it was someone else...no biggie anyways, I was just curious. As soon as I saw his weight gain last spring and his height I assumed he'd end up at SDE sooner rather than later, especially considered our lack of players there at the time.

I don't like the idea of Beyer playing SDE. Actually, I think Beyer should be a backup no matter where he plays - SAM, WDE, or SDE. He's just not a playmaker, aside from the INT return against Iowa.
February 7th, 2014 at 10:40 PM ^
agreed. desparately need disruptive athletes on DL especially playmakers outside. mattison has just gotten by with some marginal athletes relying on them to maintain gap and scheme integrity while not making many plays....the sooner that changes to big sudden athletes the better

Delicious. And it's a good deal.

Our best defender?

Who will be a senior next year and has yet to even make 2nd team all big ten with all the hype he's gotten?
edit: My bad, he did make 2nd team last year. Still hasn't lived up to the hype.
February 7th, 2014 at 10:54 PM ^
He came in as a 3-star TIGHT END. He only got hype last year, and he was 2nd team all Big Ten.
February 7th, 2014 at 11:10 PM ^
I don't remember him ever being a tight end...and he sure didn't show up enough last year for all the hype he got pre season. I don't care if he was a 3 star. I'm so sick of everyone on this blog focusing on stars. If a guy is a 5 star and doesn't live up to his hype it's ''well not all 5 stars pan out'' but if a 3 star doesn't do that much people say ''well he was a 3 star anyway''. It really doesn't work that way.

You: "That guy sure hasn't lived up to the hype he's gotten since he's been on campus."
Response: "Um... he had no hype until last year."
You: "I am so tired of people talking about hype."

He played well at times last season. He will improve as a senior along with the other DL.

When he was a senior, he was a defensive end.

Typical Michigan fan. What, does he need to have 15 sacks to meet your expectations or something?
February 7th, 2014 at 11:13 PM ^
No, a typical Michigan fan response would be ''he's a 3 star so we shouldn't expect much out him'' when msu fans just laugh at that notion.
I don't expect him to be Brandon Graham, but I would say I expect more than 4.5 sacks in 12 games for the hype he got going into last year.

That's a sack and a half better than Clowney...just saying, sacks aren't the only measurement of success even for a pass rusher.
February 8th, 2014 at 12:17 AM ^
And Clowney was half assing it for most of the year.
February 8th, 2014 at 12:24 AM ^
Clowney's been half-assing his whole life, not just this year. His attitude is terrible. He has nothing to do with Frank.

I thought you should know that you've officially turned into the kind of person you used to hate around here.
Congrats and welcome to the club.
February 8th, 2014 at 1:48 AM ^
Yeah well at least back then we could fool ourselves into thinking we'd be better the next year. This is a make or break year for me.

What school becomes your new favorite if Michigan has a bad year?
February 8th, 2014 at 12:17 AM ^
I think the hype was inflated due to going against the OL.
February 8th, 2014 at 2:17 AM ^
I don't doubt that.

your saying Lewan and Schofield sucked?

February 7th, 2014 at 10:59 PM ^
Oh, I'm sorry. Gradual improvements? A 210-lb Tight End/ DB to a 275-lb Defensive End. Pretty gradual I would say.
Game against Penn State:
2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, a touchdown, 3 Tackles for Loss. That game alone is pretty impressive, but 5 sacks and 12 TFL is a little more than a gradual improvement to say the least. The man will probably be a captain next year.

February 8th, 2014 at 12:26 AM ^
Nope. He had two forced fumbles. One he recovered. He recovered a separate fumble and returned it for a touchdown. He also had 2 other sacks. And he had another TFL. 6 separate plays. I'd say that's a pretty good game.
