But the RB-by-committee approach was in large part due to no one seizing control of the position.
RB production has gone down in recent years; that's not in doubt. Whether it's a recruiting or player development issue (or both) is up for debate.

Michigan has also had some historically crappy offensive lines.

I've been saying it all year. Jeremy will graduate and be done after this year, I give Pops a standing O and thank him for EVERYTHING he's done at Michigan. He IS Michigan. But it's time for some fresh blood as the RB coach.
Wheatley or Hart...in that order. But it's time Coach Jack.

Mike Cox hits all the right holes, and none of the wrong ones.

edit: too slow on the draw. I think we could still use two of these though.

practice performance and playing time in games. You have to assume that Kyle Bosch didn't see the field until last Saturday because the coaches determined that there were other guys who'd performed better in practice than he did, and therefore deserved playing time over him. None of them were exactly world-beaters in the game time they'd had, while from all accounts Bosch performed extremely well against Indiana. I understand why coaches use practice performance to determine playing time, but you never truly know how a player is going to perform until he gets sufficient game time. Several alumni UM players have talked candidly over the last couple of years on WTKA (without them naming names) about guys on their teams who excelled in practice but who never really got it done in games.

If not, please let me know so I can start the "(insert name) didn't say Michigan on MNF bitch session thread."
October 21st, 2013 at 10:42 PM ^
Well, he was drafted out of UMass, so I wouldn't blame him if he didn't.
October 21st, 2013 at 10:49 PM ^
He played a snap at Michigan and that's all that matters!!!
Hoenstly, I HATE those threads and thus, those people. I don't care if he says "UMass" or "Boys and Girls Club of New York"...it means nothing and the fact that people go crazy over it makes me go crazy. It's my weakness.
I think it's because I grew up 12 years in Ann Arbor and 6 in Columbus. And one thing I ALWAYS hated about Ohio fans were that they think if you were born in the state, you HAVE to like Ohio. Doesn't matter if it's Toledo and you're close to Ann Arbor. If your birth certificate said Ohio, you were a Buckeye. And not only that, but the way that they treated the guys who left the state and went to Michigan made me SICK.
So when I see Michigan fans lose their shit cause someone who played at Michigan doesn't say "The University of Michigan" on MNF...it brings me back to that place. A dark place.

Wow...I'm sorry you're in such a dark place. I hope things get better for you soon.

Huh? I guess I misread your above post. I really thought your comment about being in "a dark place" because of posts on the internet was a joke. So I played along and said "I hope you get better soon." If you were serious, I apologize. I don't really get where this took a negative turn, but I guess that's how things go on the internet sometimes...

Mike Cox is like Mike Cox, only... bigger.
Teeheehee.
October 21st, 2013 at 10:24 PM ^
fucking Giants have Ryan Mundy and Mike Cox starting tonight.
who's next, Tony Pape, Alex MItchell and Cobrani Mixon?
October 21st, 2013 at 11:17 PM ^
Stevie Brown was put on IR after his preseason injury. Mike Cox is co-starting with another untested RB (at least untested by the Giants, cut by Tampa Bay in September and just signed a couple of days ago) because everybody else was injured, including Jacobs, who was just brought back, no doubt because they didn't have faith in anyone else left on their current roster. They like Mike, but it doesn't sound like they thought of him as a starter, certainly not yet, before desperation set in.
There was a nice little article in the NY Times (print edition, don't have link) when they knew Cox was going to play. He was excited about the opportunity and said things about what he needs to work on: learning the plays, etc. From the few plays I saw tonight, even the commentators were talking about the two RBs doing straight-ahead running only, nothing complicated.
And in other news, Kenny Demens was cut today by the Cardinals. (One can hope they put him back on the practice squad after he clears waivers.)

Cox finished the game with 11 carries for 23 yards and 2 catches for 1 yard. I watched part of the game, and there was nowhere to run. The Giants' offensive line looks terrible, plus Minnesota's front four (Sharrif Floyd, Jared Allen, etc.) is pretty good.
The other running back, Peyton Hillis, had 18 carries for 36 yards and 1 touchdown, plus 5 catches for 45 yards and another TD.

were 17th against the run so they're just mediocre.
