My impression is that MSU, for some time, has't run an offense that would be condusive to Jayru Campbell's playing style. Their new OC (former Ohio OC) Jim Bollman seemed really conflicted with dual-threat quarterbacks, such Pryor and T. Smith. Despite my personal negative impression of T. Pryor as a person, I certainly could recognize his immense talent. With the exception of the Rose Bowl against Oregon, where Pryor dominated, I always felt his talent was wasted at Ohio. For Jayru's sake, assuming Bollman actually survives long enough to coach him, he better hope Bollman is able to expand his mind.
I hope people on this site are positive for this kid, except when he plays us. No need to disparage him because he chose Sparty.
Jayru Campbell is a drop back passer who has the legs to eat up some ground so far at the high school level. He's not Terrell Pryor.
And Troy Smith won the Heisman Trophy.
Congrats to Jayru. I don't see him as a dual threat. What makes you say that? I'd say he's your typical drop back passer.
After watching his film again he reminds me a lot of Maxwell for MSU. THey're both good QBs.
Is he a dual threat QB? I think everything I've seen says he's a pretty straight-forward pocket-passer type.
EDIT: Whoops, not trying to pile on the commenter. Everyone else seems to type a lot faster than me. I've clearly got that Big10 speed in my fingers.
Black quarterbacks like Geno Smith are all dual threat.
BOOM JETS'D

My take, purely from watching his videos, as I don't live in Michigan anymore, is that Campbell has a great skill set that can be very effective, so long as he's used properly. This was my point. He's above-average athletic, has a proven track record of success, throws a decent ball, and he's listed at 6' 3" 190lbs. Pryor was taller at 6' 6". Troy Smith was shorter at 6" 1'. Neither of those guys were either pure dual-threat or pro-style, imo.
My only point, which maybe came off poorly, was that Jim Bollman isn't the most creative of OCs. I imagine every Buckeye fan reading this post just said, "Ahem!"
I certainly didn't mean to write a post that could be construed as racist. For that, I'm sorry, and somewhat embarassed.
Pryor is pretty much the definition of dual threat. He improved in his last year as a passer, but he averaged over 700 rushing yards per year at Ohio.
No offer from Michigan.
Not even sure if Alabama offer was commitable one considering they got Ricky Town.
The Alabama offer was not commitable even before Ricky Town. No Bama QB offer is commitable when extended. It's just and offer to be evaluated in person. This is well known. I kind of think the early ND and Bama offers were "freshman starting for state championship game? Let's get our foot in the door." Not even sure the ND offer would be commitable at this point either.
Alabama and ND both offered him a year ago as a freshman, but Campbell didn't develop as much expected last year. No other high major has been recruiting him hard. He still has a high ceiling, but there are a number of better QB prospects in the 2015 class right now.
Maybe we were waiting to offer him? He was set to visit in November, I think.
I don't believe that they were ever going to offer him. Which isn't to say that he has no talent, he just doesn't come close to the skill set that they want at the position. They have offered one 2015 QB and shown interest in half a dozen others and he was not one of those.
He hasn't proven he's good enough to get an offer. It's as simple as that. He needs a better arm and needs to make better decisions.
Well the West Coast Offense is about timing and accuracy/decision making so you would start there when looking for qualities. I would say that biggest thing that he's lacking right now is foot work, which looks pretty poor. And his mechanics just aren't very good either. If you go to his highlight tape and watch the throw at the 0:53 second mark, he's rolling out and he throws off of his back foot and doesn't get any legs into it at all, he just kind of throws it like you would in the backyard. Obviously he's still really young and has plenty of time to develop, but he needs so much more work than a lot of other quarterbacks and there's no guarantee he'll get there.
There was an article back in March (HERE) which reported that Campbell was, if nothing else, at least paying attention to Michigan. Jayru himself said:
"I would like to have an offer from Michigan, but I guess they want to see my development," Campbell said. "I believe Mike [Weber] and I will attend the same school, but if not probably the same conference"
If that is the case, then the staff may have wanted to see another season of Jayru at Cass Tech perhaps. It doesn't seem like an offer would have been in the near future even by his own words.
He's a good prospect, from what I've seen (which is admittedly limited to the championship games). But he looks like an average athlete to me. Not a dual threat type of guy. He's a pocket passer. He has the same build as Devin in high school and the same funky "shot put" style of release that he'll have to change. He also has Gardner's calm presence in the pocket. He's pretty unflappable back in the pocket. But in terms of sheer athleticisim, he's not close to Devin in terms of foot speed, quickness and arm strength.
MSU has really been making an effort to get into Cass Tech. Looks like it's paying off.
I don't think he was ever very high up on our board, and we probably never going to get an offer from us. Still though, big pick up for State.
We're going to have to get used to other schools making inroads into Cass Tech, though I still think we will have first dibs on whoever we want to get.
Except Damon Webb
/sigh...
ever really panned out? We have yet to see wth Dawson and Lewis, but for the most part Cass players have been less than overwhelming at the collegiate level.
The All American?
No, Tom.
The one who went to Southeastern and not Cass Tech?
I just wonder what BWC would have done if he was coached by Hoke and Mattison for his whole career.
Harlan Huckleby?
And his teammates Curtis Greer, Tom Seabron and Roosevelt Smith.
So we should have offered a QB the staff clearly didn't want? We got commitments from three guys in the last class, so that should be enough to let them know we still value their program.
You lose a "pipeline" school when you are not genuine with a recruit or string him along. That certainly isn't the case here.
It's all good. This is a really good situation for both Cass and MSU. In the long run, I don't see this as being a big concern for Michigan going forward with re: to the recruitment of Cass Tech.
There were some tweets posted on the 247 board.
Based on those tweets he seems pretty upset about not getting offered by Michigan.
who has a chip on their shoulder because they feel slighted by Michigan? Shocker. In other news....WE LANDED ON THE MOON!!
If he wasn't even offered, who has Michigan offered for 2015 QBs?
Kind of disappointed but he wasn't offered so I guess there are better choices.
Just sucks that he's going to a team Michigan plays every year. Hopefully Alabi can come here and sack him a lot.
Josh Rosen is the only 2015 QB to be offered.
What about Malzone? I've heard a lot about him.
"It's awesome in the sense that more and more big traditional programs are looking at me. Michigan even more because their process is usually very slow with quarterbacks so that's an honor in itself."That was Rosen's reaction to getting a offer from Michigan. I said something similar below. There is a chance that we don't see another QB get offered until much later, maybe Feb of next year. Wilton Speight got offered on signing day for the 2013 class. Like Rosen said above, this staff likes to take their time with QB evaluation and offers.
Not to be a bummer but reading through this interview it doesnt seem like Rosen really has Michigan high on his interest list. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1698410-2015-5-star-qb-josh-rosen-talks-pac-12-schools-crazy-call-from-a-michigan-fan
Those of us who follow recruiting already know that. My point in posting that quote was not really about Rosen, but about how our staff likes to take their time evaulating QBs.
Rosen is most likely going to stay out west. If he doesn't get the Stanford offer that he wants, he is going to go to Cal.
Name one other high major program recruiting Campbell right now. The Alabama and ND offers were from his freshman year, but both of those programs have backed off recruiting him. There has been no other news of other programs making a move for him.
I think the story here is that Campbell is not on the board of prospects that Michgan was recruiting.
