Incorrect. It was non-de-committable. Marshall couldn't - and didn't - decommit. Meyer dropped him.

What the fuck else is in this photo? Seriously, explain the anatomy: is that a leg, an arm, is that heel to the right, is there some leather involved here? Really.... is that a bony hip?

Or at least didn't want to live with the reality that his head coach might one day make up a story about Marshall attaching an animal to his dick if, you know, that little lie could benefit Meyer in some way.
February 13th, 2013 at 10:40 PM ^
This is purely conjecture, but I see a committment based on pressure from OSU as the only explanation for the timing of this. Maybe a "commit now or we won't hold a spot for you" kind of deal where Marshall decided he better lock that spot down just in case he wanted it and visit other schools to make sure. You'd have to think Meyer would include a no visiting other schools clause but maybe even he knew it was too early in the process for that.
February 13th, 2013 at 10:43 PM ^
I don't think it's fair that HS kids get an ultimatum. Hoke > Urbs.

February 13th, 2013 at 11:05 PM ^
When have you heard this, and from whom?
February 13th, 2013 at 11:15 PM ^
Pretty sure it was used on Leon Mcquay III, per II. Ross Douglas subsequently committed and we still pursued him. So that was must have been kinda weird.
February 13th, 2013 at 11:32 PM ^
It's not sleazy if it's the truth.
"Hey, we have 27 spots and we've already taken 23" near the end of a recruiting cycle is a far cry from "commit now or never" at the beginning of one.
February 13th, 2013 at 11:43 PM ^
Yeah. I know. The guy asked for an instance in which an ultimatum was given. I'm not saying it's the same as threatening to pull an offer.
February 14th, 2013 at 2:30 AM ^
back with a "fairly certain". I asked in an attempt to clarify the difference between an "ultimatum" and "we are running out of spots". Big difference. I'd still be interested in seeing the article where LM Jr. was quoted as saying that.
February 13th, 2013 at 11:53 PM ^
Yeah - almost every coach has told recruits that there are a limited number of spots and if x number of guys commit before you do, we won't be able to offer you a scholarship anymore. And that's certainly not sleazy.
It's very possible Meyer told Marshall that they were pursuing him along with other DEs, and he wanted to get them locked up ASAP. Knowing that a spot in OSU's class is highly sought after, he took his spot without thinking whether or not it was actually in his best interest.
This is not sleazy on Meyer's part, and this happens at every school.
February 14th, 2013 at 12:07 AM ^
Didn't we just hear this about the 2014 QB offers?
February 14th, 2013 at 12:32 AM ^
Something like that, but not quite the same.
The coaches did their due diligence in narrowing down the field of potential offerees. They vetted the interest of the three prospects, and decidedly offered the one that was the most willing to commit early and solidly.
I don't think Speight's hand was forced in any way. The implication that Urban Meyer may tell some kids that their early offer may have a rapid expiration date (again, implication that I'm picking up from other posters on here) is not mutually beneficial to both school and recruit and is a very one-sided proposition. Locking up the most important position on the offense by saying "you're one of the guys we want, and if you want us the job's yours" is simply good matchmaking and not a threat in the slightest.
February 13th, 2013 at 10:48 PM ^
I'd say he did it to prevent people in bucknuts to inform the rest of the world that his offer to OSU was un-commitable anyways once he choosed to go elsewere
February 13th, 2013 at 10:33 PM ^
Just plain strange. Is this what recruiting is coming to. If you were going to decommit so quickly... WHY DID YOU COMMIT IN THE FIRST PLACE?
Although... This couldn't have happened to a classier program /s
Let's hope he picks the guys in Maize and Blue and keeps that commitment.
February 13th, 2013 at 10:35 PM ^
Because he's sixteen years old.
February 13th, 2013 at 10:37 PM ^
I understand that, but it's not like this is the most important decision he will make in his life up to this point.
If you were still undecided... why decide in the first place.
Just strange.
February 14th, 2013 at 12:41 AM ^
I know you're all like "I wasn't like that when I was 16," but yes, yes you were. Your memory just sucks.
February 13th, 2013 at 10:44 PM ^
scumbag disengenous coach pressuring him to commit or else. He then met the Michigan coaching staff and realized that while big time college football may indeed be a business, not every head coach runs his football program like a used car salesman.

February 13th, 2013 at 11:09 PM ^
I think Hoke has changed the tide on the rivalry. Hell people in Ohio are starting to believe him. Never in a million years I would have thought that. Selling Michigan jerseys is a good start.
February 14th, 2013 at 7:28 AM ^
Dumb question, but this comes up a lot on the board. What do people mean? Was Meijer not carrying any UM stuff before Hoke? Is is simply that sales increased starting 2 years ago?
