The end of "Ohio"?
Okay, I'll be that guy...
Is this the end of "Ohio" and "Beat Ohio"?
I suspect not, at least from the football program officialdom. They've drawn that line; I don't really expect them to back down.
But for common usage among fans? The ones that don't happen to be going to a Brady Hoke luncheon speech that day? What will any fan-on-the-street be thinking, when saying "Beat Ohio!" Will it be, "D'oh! That first-round tourney loss to a 13-seed?"
Is this the trashtalk-equivalent of Appalachian State? How long before Beilein and Brandon get a rematch with The Ohio University Bobcats?
People logged on, saw an intelligent q (relative), saw, though, that it was Section 1, and then....poof- bad question, too soon, etc.
For what it's worth, I think that we should stop calling OSU "Ohio," at least for awhile. You know, when the team that's actually called that beats us in a single-elimination game, in a 4-13 upset. Go ahead and dislike it, but we look like foolish children for calling one school- that we beat for the first time in YEARS in football (insert caveats re: them cheating) the name of a school that just embarassed us in a marquee sport....yeah- let's not be those guys, and let's slow our roll on the whole "Ohio" stuff. We are not Brady Hoke, and, well, I kinda hope he slows on it for a minute (or has an awesome one-liner for it at the next spring practice presser). Anyway, the whole damn thing was childish, and its childishness was crystallized by our defeat tonight by a team that, well, we excluded from consideration of things that matter when coming up with a flippant, childish nickname for our arch rival.
I logged on, saw a pretty shitty question, and then read it to realize that...poof- he asked in a way that makes him sound like a condescending asshole.
I don't think Ohio University should care about what we call another school. If people who are concerned with OU's feelings think we're big jerks, oh well. If it pisses off people who root for "Ohio", good. Mission accomplished.
don't call them OU, it's somehow offensive to Oklahoma

(Unless you're throwing rocks at a zombie. Then someone else gets killed.)
You may now return to your book club with Section 1.
A six-point favorite lost a tournament game on the night that Lehigh beat Duke and the day that the #3 team in the country lost to Norfolk State, and it's an apocalyptic horror? It's Appalachian State?
What the man-in-the-street will be saying is "oh, did Michigan lose last night too? I didn't notice."
"Thank heavens for Duke. And Mizzou. Take the spotlight off us."
And really, the "Ohio" story is basically an intra-rivalry thing only. I don't think the national press cares much about it. Or it is too silly to them to concern themselves with it. Only locals, local writers and local fans care.
When I brought up App State, it was in the context of "the Appalachian State of trashtalk." Which, as "trashtalk," is automatically a quantum level lower-importance.
Six-point favorites lose, what, 30-35% of the time? It was a non-event. Even if there had been no other upsets on the day it was a non-event. Something that happens maybe 300 times over the course of a D1 season. And when you brought up Appalachian State and Brady Hoke it was in the context of an obsessive-compulsive disorder.
non-historical.
A first round tournament loss. Um, okay, it happens. The Ohio U. Bobcats played very, very well. Michigan's '11-'12 team, which played some good games this year to grab a share of the regular season record title, was just slumping at year's end. I didn't start this to debate probabilities or even to argue about why Michigan lost this basketball game.
I only wanted to point out the inherent, ironic humiliation that now accompanies the "Ohio" meme, which fans (as opposed to football team members, apparently, and employees of the Athletic Department) can easily discard if they wish to. Brady Hoke isn't going to require us to do pushups if we accidentally say, "State."
The pain of a 4th seeded basketball team losing to a 13th seeded basketball team is attributable to the head football coach of the 4th seeded basketball team's university because of said football coach's preferred nomenclature for his university's athletic rival. Furthermore, fans of the 4th seeded basketball team's university and its athletic department should consider this information you have so bravely unearthed as they weigh the emotional and philosophical value of said football coach's nomenclature.
Your point is fabulously cogent and well-received. I eagerly await your thread on preparing grilled cheese in a swimming pool.
No, Cornelius Buttcheeks, I didn't attribute any causal relationship whatsoever. Personally, I am attributing Michigan's loss to the fact that at the end of 40 minutes, Ohio has more points than we did. Cause=outscored. Result=lost. That's it. Attribution.
Now, Cornelius (may I call you Cornelius?); there is just this. You won't catch me trashtalking anybody and saying, "Beat Ohio," when all the wind has just been sucked out of that joke, with a loss to 13-seed... Ohio. Because, as a sentient being with a brain, I know that our rivals will only be thinking, "You outta be able to, like, really beat Ohio, before you start talking trash with Ohio State."
You won't catch me trashtalking anybody and saying, "Beat Ohio"Section 1 no call Ohio State "Ohio."
when all the wind has just been sucked out of that joke, with a loss to 13-seed... Ohio.Section 1 no call Ohio State "Ohio" because Michigan basketball team lose to Ohio University basketball team. In basketball. Where "Ohio" come from in first place? Come from Hoke. Hoke coach football. Hoke call Ohio State "Ohio."
Because, as a sentient being with a brain, I know that our rivals will only be thinking, "You outta be able to, like, really beat Ohio, before you start talking trash with Ohio State."Hoke beat "Ohio" in football game. Basketball team lose to Ohio University. Section 1 no call Ohio State "Ohio." Because Ohio U win basketball game. Hoke not lose. Basketball lose. But Section 1 say Hoke phrase dead now. Playtime with causation.
Wow Mr. Buttcheeks. That was one of the most impressive of all time.

Yes, whether Hoke calls Ohio State "Ohio" had nothing to do with how the basketball game got played. (Well maybe not; we don't know. It might have inspired the Bobcats in the manner of other statements in print that get posted on locker room walls. But I'd agree it is speculative.)
And yes, all things being equal and trashtalking aside, Michigan need ought not to suffer shame for having gotten to the NCAA basketball tournament and lost in round one to a hot-shooting team.
But yes, in this case there is a little more. Michigan's institutionalized trashtalking of "Ohio" spilled over, purely coincidentally, onto a MAC school. Ohio University can claim victory over Michigan until, in several years, we meet again in some athletic contest. And in Athens, they probably have the same adoptive distaste for the University of Michigan as students at Wayne State or Central or Eastern might have for Ohio State. More than anything, the real target of "Ohio," (Ohio State), can laugh every time they hear it, since the reply will be, "'Beat Ohio'? In what? Basketball?"
Do tell Mrs. Buttcheeks I said hello, and I hope all of the little Buttcheeks are doing well.
You really don't know when to stop, do you?
which is hard to do when you throw out phrases like "need ought not suffer shame," you think there is no connection between the basketball game and the football program such that someone would be justified in using the result of the basketball game in response to a claim about the football team. However, you think that opposing fans will act as if there is such a connection to criticize the football team. Hence, your conclusion is that we ought to change our nomenclature in order to avoid a criticism which you admit is illegitimate (since it's based on a non-existent connection between the two sports).
The obvious question this raises is "why should we change in order to avoid illegitimate criticism?" If people criticized Michigan for having the colors maize and blue, should we change the colors? If a coach was illegitimately criticized because of how he talked or for failing to apprease certain portion of the fan base, should he change how he acts?
However, this whole debate is pointless anyway. If we say, "Beat Ohio State," then they can still respond 'Beat Ohio State'? In what? Basketball?" They beat us 2 out of 3 this year and kicked our asses badly in the rubber match. I fail to see how this reply is any less legitimate than the reply that's got you so worried*.
* : I don't think that any reply actually has you worried at all. All that interests you is using any chance you get to criticize Hoke, because doing that makes you less butthurt about RR.

This is hilarious. You "win" the thread.
I think a poster who calls himself "Cornelius Buttcheeks" improbably not only won the thread, but also demonstrated himself to be a mastermind of reasoning that combines impenetrable, ruthless logic with uncanny humor with accessibility.
This is some fuckin' syllogism CB. I'm still recovering, and I read the post this morning.
Most people think that a cause has to be temporally prior to it's effect. Being outscored at the end of 40 minutes is just the same a thing as losing, it's not a cause of it. Unless you think that the loss doesn't happen until sometime after the end of the game. Which wouldn't surprise me, since you are an idiot.
Section 1 is just a big fan of Jaegwon Kim, and thinks that losing supervenes on being outscored at the end of 40 minutes, but is not reducible to it.
The OHIO Bobcats did better against us than the Ohio Buckeyes. That's why their name gets to be in caps.
If Coach Hoke says it is Ohio its Ohio..PERIOD
We embrace "ohio" as allegiance to hoke and beilin but also as a counter to: (a) TSUN, and (b) the annoyance of hearing Ohion NFLers state the word "The" at thousand decibals, then pausing and then finishing saying the rest of the Ohio school name. I'll call them Ohio the rest of my life. I love it.
should be too.
I'll take pleasure in the rest of the college football world smirking whenever Hoke refers to "Ohio" next year.
Thank you. It irritates me when people use shift "o" when tryping ohio. Too much effort and respect if you ask me.
NO. Part of the reason we call OSU Ohio is because Ohio U is irrelevant--it's a tiny MAC school [edit: redundant] that gets no love even from its own state. If Ohio U had grown into something worth recognizing in the world of sports, this would be different. But they didn't. And it's for that very reason--their modern irrelevance--that it was so embarassing for us to lose to them. Because they're small and generally irrelevant. For that reason, we'll continue to address that school down south as "Ohio" because that's the state that school reperesents. They identify with eachother almost exclusively. If OHIO wants to be recognized as anything more than an irrelevant MAC school who upset us in the 2012 NCAA tournament, they'll have to win the support of their own state first.
Long live "Beat Ohio."
....before I opened this thread, I was hoping that perhaps the state of Ohio itself, or at least a fair portion of it, had finally reverted back to being the southern end of Lake Erie as it was before the last ice age. I must say, I wish this had been the case.
I think it is pretty clear even among the media to which school "Beat Ohio" refers, and this past week saw a pretty amusing, albeit temporary expansion of that meaning. If the suggestion here is to suddenly hand respect to the Buckeyes because we lost to the Bobcats in the NCAA Tournament, then I dare say that this is a nonsensical suggestion. I, for one, will not go hat in hand to Gordon Gee or Gene Smith or that fanbase to politely apologize because we lost to a MAC school in basketball.
Losing in the first round of the ncaa tourney being compared to APPA state? are you serious right now, are you new to college sports? The state of Ohio has always had good basketball teams. Xavier , Dayton , OSU, Cinnci thats 4 off the top of my head that at some point ran multi ncaa tourneys
...I wish we would knock off all of that "Ohio" baloney. Our rival is not "Ohio", it's Ohio State.
Karma says that we fully deserved last night's loss.
March 17th, 2012 at 10:01 AM ^
Karma? Really?
Calling OSU "Ohio" is not an insult to Ohio U. Michigan fans don't have an issue with Ohio U (especially after the epic Mascot beatdown) and fans of both schools tend to hate OSU. The only way that calling OSU "Ohio" could in any way be construed as an insult to Ohio U is, as someone else pointed out, as an error of omission. But it's not some purposeful insult to them.
March 17th, 2012 at 11:11 AM ^
Also, nobody ever calls it Ohio U. I was born and raised in Ohio and I've never heard that before. It's just OU.
March 17th, 2012 at 11:14 AM ^
Ohio U. is pretty common usage in SW Ohio, where there aren't many OU students or alums. The closer you get to Athens the more it's OU instead.
is that in Ohio "Ohio" is not commonly used to refer to Ohio University. I have never in my life heard anyone say "my son/daughter goes to Ohio.," because it would just lead to confusion. They go to Ohio U. or O.U.

Ohio...
"Four letter word just to get me along
It's a difficulty and I'm biting on my tongue and I
I keep stalling, keeping me together
People around gotta find something to say now
Holding back, everyday the same
Don't wanna be a loner
Listen to me, oh no
I never say anything at all
But with nothing to consider they forget my name
(ame, ame, ame)
They call me 'hell'
They call me 'Stacey'
They call me 'her'
They call me 'Jane'
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
They call me 'quiet'
But I'm a riot
Mary-Jo-Lisa
Always the same
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name"
That's not their name either. But it was amusing.
Yesterday, we were hoisted by our own petard.
There's dumb and there's dumber.
Enough.

I hope so. I didn't like it from the start. I've tried to let it grow on me but it hasn't stuck. But just because I don't use it doesn't mean others can't. Free country and all that...
March 17th, 2012 at 10:20 AM ^
You're reading into and taking this stuff way too seriously. Who cares what OSU or Ohio U fans say? If Brady Hoke wants to have fun with it, he's more than entitled to do whatever he wants.
are free to have fun with the derision aimed at U-M. For example, see today's New York Times.

I don't think this upset is of the magnitude that it would really be what people think of when we keep calling them Ohio. I must say I am amazed at how "Ohio" upsets some people. Love it.
