Andy Mignery on WTKA today…

Andy Mignery on WTKA today was very objective in his post mortem. He said that the disparity between their OL and DL lines and ours was very apparent. And their skill players vs. our DB's were striking as well. We also need to limit self-inflicted wounds in The Game.

However, your academic disparity argument is pure B.S. Stop it.

You mentioned on-line classes and made an implication. Justin Fields - who has been the target of the on-line jabs - is, apparently, a smart kid who had a 3.9 GPA in high school and, according to a 2017 ESPN article, received offers from some of the top academic institutions before his Power 5 offers started rolling in: "As a testament to his academics as well as his athletics, Duke, Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Harvard are among the schools that offer him scholarships."

Ohio State's starting safety, Justin Fuller, was named as one of 12 finalists for the Campbell Trophy, which is known in college football circles as the "Academic Heisman." He has a 3.6 GPA in Business Marketing.

Lastly, since the Academic Progress Rate (APR) was implemented in 2004-2005, Ohio State leads Michigan with an average of 968.07 vs 963.21 over those 14 years. Only Northwestern, Rutgers and Wisconsin were better. Our academic performance has improved under Jim Harbaugh but Ohio State also beat us last year 987 vs. 982. So let's stop with the funny, tired, non-factual narratives about academics which allow for easy excuses.

However, let's look in the mirror and do some true self-examination. Harbaugh is not the problem. Facilities and support are not the problem. We just need to recruit better players.

Michigan's recruiting life blood under Bo thru Lloyd was in Ohio. But we've been basically shut out of Ohio since 2000. Tressel shut us out of Ohio toward the end of Lloyd's tenure. Then RichRod came in at the same time as Dantonio and it got worse. When Urban came in, Dantonio (former Cincy coach and Tressel's ex-DC) benefitted when Urban went national and he stepped in and secured some of the Ohio kids that we used to get. Then, when Fickell (Meyer's ex-DC) assumed the reigns in Cincy, he picked off some of the recruits that Dantonio would get and you can see where MSU is now. Ryan Day has started to re-emphasize recruiting in Ohio. That means we'll have to compete in Ohio against Day, Dantonio and Fickell - three coaches with strong Ohio connections. Good luck with that. That's a big reason why our Ohio pipeline has dried up.

To compete with the elite, we need to find better recruits who are bigger and faster or can be developed into bigger and faster. We already recruit many of the same players (remember when we were slobbring over Zach Harrison?) we just need coaches who are aggressive on the recruiting trail, have a keen eye for talent and are much better closers.

Big beats small. Fast beats slow.

Saw him once in the Pittsburgh airport...

1987-1988 timeframe. Sitting on his suitcase near baggage claim pick-up,
a lone figure.

He looked sad & I felt the same when I saw him there.

Kendall Sheffield

I'm surprised you didn't focus more on Sheffield in your write-up. Based on the video that i've seen, he's Ohio State's weak link when on the field.

When he's not targeting the TE, I'll bet JBC has the QB throw at Sheffield.

CIC/Rankings

Are these the latest rankings?

If so, it looks like they're #6 in the B1G and ahead of Rice and USC.

Hoisted By Our Own Petard

Ohio...

"Four letter word just to get me along

It's a difficulty and I'm biting on my tongue and I

I keep stalling, keeping me together

People around gotta find something to say now

Holding back, everyday the same

Don't wanna be a loner

Listen to me, oh no

I never say anything at all

But with nothing to consider they forget my name

(ame, ame, ame)

They call me 'hell'

They call me 'Stacey'

They call me 'her'

They call me 'Jane'

That's not my name

That's not my name

That's not my name

That's not my name

They call me 'quiet'

But I'm a riot

Mary-Jo-Lisa

Always the same

That's not my name

That's not my name

That's not my name

That's not my name"

That's not their name either. But it was amusing.

Yesterday, we were hoisted by our own petard.

There's dumb and there's dumber.

Enough.

It's Les Miles

I was a Jim Harbaugh advocate when RichRod was hired but Michigan turned a deaf ear and went with the flavor of the month. Now look at Harbaugh. My wife met RichRod at the UM women's football camp prior to his first season and said "he's John Cooper". And she was right. So now the RichRod dismissal is a fair accompli (three years and a cloud of dust") but what does Michigan do now if Harbaugh says "no"?
They have one option - Les Miles. Yes, he's an ass clown. But he beat Ohio State in the BCS NC game. And he's the one true linkage to Bo that's actually viable and Michigan needs that lineage now more than ever. Michigan needs to rebuild the proud tradition that eroded under RichRod. And Ohio State fans will love to hate Les Miles. A guy like Brady Hoke will not get the same immediate respect and will not get the juices flowing on either side of the Toledo border.

So why would Miles leave now? Miles has to see that the rise of Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas (and Mississippi State!?) in the SEC West will make his life much more difficult in the years ahead. He has already been to summit at LSU but their fans are already asking "what have you done for me lately?". On the other had, he can be the Michigan savior and compete in a less intense environment  within the Big Ten's Legends division (against his former defensive coordinator Bo Pelini).

In my view, Dave Brandon has choreographed this well. If you don't know where you're going, stay where you are. But he moved. Based on what happened last time, the Les Miles hire will not leak prior to LSU's game against Texas A&M . And Brandon will not be incommunicado on a yacht in the near term. So I would expect an announcement sometime after LSU's Bowl game so that Michigan doesn't have  replay of the last hiring fiasco.

I will be shocked if Les Miles is not the next Michigan coach.

Thank You.

I Just Want To Know When They Mail The Season Tix. Seriously.

Anyone?

I'm A Newbie. They Said The Tickets Move Around Each Game... <m>

So I'd like to know where we're sitting each game so I can decide which games to go to. I have two boys (nine and 15) who play football on different weekend days. No evil intent.

Just Received Season Ticket Application. A Question...

About 10 years ago, I paid a nominal fee and was placed on the season ticket waiting list. I never heard back and never really expected to be able to take advantage of the opportunity. But since my kids were very young at the time, I thought that I might get a shot when they were older. But I knew that it was a long shot.

Well, I received a mailing yesterday from the ticket office offering me the opportunity to buy up to four season tickets but only have about 10 days to make my decision. I was stunned.

My only thought is that if the Athletic Department is offering ME tickets, that UM season ticket sales must have plummeted due to 1) U.S. economy 2) drop-off in auto industry support 2) the recent lack of success on the field.

Anybody hearing anything about season ticket sales?

Thanks!
