OT: Dantonio says MSU got top player in MI
Today at his press conference, Dantonio apparently made the statement that, "For the third straight year, Michigan State gets the preceived top player by the media in the state of Michigan."
He was referring to Burbridge:

Apparently #5 is the new #1 !!!

This isn't really that controversial. Burbridge is probably the best recruit in Michigan this year.

The best thing you can say about Douchetonio and MSU is that they are perfect for one another. It's also the worst thing.

whatever! Always easy to make the numbers/rankings slant your way.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:44 PM ^
He wasn't a consensus choice. The Detroit News went with Ojemudia.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:46 PM ^
That just means he wasn't the unanimous choice.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:49 PM ^
Is he ranked #1 by everyone except the News? I don't think so. I don't think the Rivals analysts had him #1 in the state either.
February 1st, 2012 at 9:07 PM ^
Michigan has everyone else in the Top 10, minus DO'B.
They also recruited nationally, and very well in Ohio.
...but, yeah, MSU got the #1 player in Michigan.

the person probably means unanimous, but the two words don't mean the same thing.
I only point this out because it is a fairly widespread misconception. As a Dr. I sit on many committee's and all operate on a concensus basis which means you come to your conclusions collectively as a group. If we had to achieve unanimous votes to get anything done, nothing would ever progress.
Unanimous means everyone agrees. Concensus means it is collectively what the group could agree on, not necessarily what each indidvidual in the group wanted.
A for instance would be: I have quadrulet 3 and a half year olds who all like different tv shows. If I wanted them to unanimously agree what show to watch they could never do it. Now if I told each of them to list their top five choices of tv shows and pass them to me, we could compare the lists and pick one that appears on all four. It wasn't any of their first choices, but they all agree to watch it.

I think that is a fair statement, and also a douchy one.

"Wow thats great coach! Anyone else?"
"Who said that"
February 1st, 2012 at 4:52 PM ^
Prob true, but he's still a douchtard

Where did you get your avatar pic?

It looks to have been taken in the Superdome.

Can a strong argument be made for him, yes.
Even if it is 100% true I'll take 7 out of top 10 and lose the top guy.
Insert joke about Dantonio only wanting one of the top ten from michigan because he is a national recruiter.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:01 PM ^
He got the top recruit from each state, no?
February 1st, 2012 at 5:10 PM ^
With the commitment of Norfleet, we get to 9 out of 15 (60%) of the Detroit News Blue Chip list that was published two weeks ago (http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20120116/SPORTS0203/201160303).
Not to mention 9 out of 11 (82%) of those that decided to stay instate for college.
I think that goes in the W column.
February 1st, 2012 at 4:53 PM ^
We still got every one else who's good in the state of Michigan though.
February 1st, 2012 at 4:54 PM ^
Imma let you finish Dantonio, but Michigan signed a top-5 class this year.

"WE'RE NOT HERE TO HEAR ABOUT MSU RECRUITING - GRRRARG!
February 1st, 2012 at 4:55 PM ^
That's fine. They're not even in the top 25 for class rankings. Who gives a shit what he says about one player. 2 cheers for you Dantonio.
February 1st, 2012 at 4:57 PM ^
that ranked Burbidge as the top rated player in the state. That must have been the one article that Dantonio saw.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:55 PM ^
...may Burbridge have all the success at MSU that Charles Rodgers had with the Lions!
February 1st, 2012 at 4:59 PM ^
You have to something to cover up the fact your class is #40 on Rivals and #36 on Scout, while Michigan is Top 10 for sure and possibly Top 5.
This is the first year in his career Dantonio has been going up against a strong Michigan and Ohio State at the same time. The man should have used his success this year to jump, but he didn't and how he pays the price. Ohio State and Michigan get their pick of the litter. Notre Dame and Wisconsin get a bunch of high star guys but take smaller classes. MSU gets a pair of 4*s and then 3*s and 2*s. MSU is fifth for overall Midwestern recruiting at best.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:10 PM ^
He's been saying for awhile now that since OSU and M are back on top of the conference, it will impact MSU and PSU the hardest.
But I'm glad Mork Donatos got his moment.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:00 PM ^
It's a typically cocky statement but not all that farfetched. Trieu agrees:
And so does Sam Webb:
For Dantonio, it's all about spin right now. He was annhiliated by Michigan's overall recruiting efforts so he can do nothing but hang his hat on getting (possibly) the best single player in state.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:02 PM ^
I like Mattison's attitude toward rankings from the front page much better.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:02 PM ^
It's a good thing for Dantonio that recruiting classes are all about one guy.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:12 PM ^
Like how seasons are all about one game...
February 1st, 2012 at 6:04 PM ^
But I don't see how The Game is relevant to a thread about sparty.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:02 PM ^
Such bitterness. I dont blame him. Seriously how crappy would you feel if you had back to back 11 win seasons and got absolutely obliterated on the recruiting trail?
February 1st, 2012 at 5:03 PM ^
The good people at Scout ask "who gives a shit Mark". According to them Michigan is #4 nationally and your team currently holds down the #35 slot.
http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=9&c=14&yr=2012
We'll see your number 1 player and raise you the rest of our class.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:09 PM ^
How the hell does does FSU have six 5*s and is only ranked #9?
February 1st, 2012 at 5:03 PM ^
Who the fuck cares about in-state recruiting. I though they were focusing on the inter-galactic student athletes.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:03 PM ^
Good for them.
We landed 7 of the top 10 kids in MI, and the top kid in Ohio.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:04 PM ^
Actually Dantonio shouldve said "msu got the top player in the state that couldnt get into UM and wanted to play with his teammates and buddies but could not do to bad grades so we will take him". Nice spin md.
February 2nd, 2012 at 5:23 AM ^
This does work both ways however, as Northfleet would likely have committed to MSU had his grades been order during the beginning of his recruitment.
Furthermore, just to play devil's advocate, Burbridge's quote to the Detroit News doesn't really scream "I wanted to go to UM!" When asked why he didn't choose UM he said, "I'm not a real fan of Michigan..."
Just saying that I found it interesting.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:04 PM ^
Dantonio needs to just shut up and coach. He has lucked out and ran into a Michigan squad these past few years in a transition of coaches and players. Even this last year IMO Michigan beat themselves and MSU escaped AA with a win. I think MSU's run is over starting this year.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:06 PM ^
They played in Lansing, but I know what you mean.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:07 PM ^
Woops double post, screw MSU
February 1st, 2012 at 5:08 PM ^
they absolutely outplayed us this year and deserved to win. Also, the game was in EL, not AA.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:04 PM ^
I know who will get the # 1 next year and it won't be MSU, hello Shane.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:26 PM ^
In all fairness, it's very possible that ND gets the top player in Michigan for 2013. But if it's not Elmer, it's Shane, so we know whoever gets #1, he won't be going to State.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:30 PM ^
I forgot about Elmer, but like you said he can't hang his hat on that in 365 days.
February 1st, 2012 at 5:04 PM ^
MOVE ON!
