Mgo Heisman
With the Heisman being presented today, I thought it would be cool to see who the people on this blog would give the award to. The finalists are Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Monte Ball, Tyrann Mathieu, Trent Richardson.
If you would like to participate leave a comment with your top 3 and I will count up the votes before the presentation ceremony tonight.
My ballot:
1. Trent Richardson
2. Robert Griffin III
3. Andrew Luck
results:
Robert Griffin III - 143
Monte Ball - 83
Tyrann Mathieu - 41
Andrew Luck - 38
Trent Richardson - 22

Also, according to stiffarmtrophy.com, Mr. Denard Xavier Robinson has a 3rd place vote.

any other winner would be a crime - his QB rating is off the charts, and he brought it all year with both his arm and legs

This is absolutely right. How are people NOT placing him first? Monte Ball is a great back with tons of touchdowns but there are a tonnnn of backs that could fill his shoes with tha offensive line and offense. I've thought the whole time that he deserved it more than Richardson until I actually thought about how many yards Richardson picks up himself.
What my ballot would look like:
1) Robert Griffin III - Not even close, he's turned Baylor into a would-be top 10 team if they're defense was any good. His accuracy is amazing and has better numbers than anyone else even with 26 sacks from a bad offensive line.
2) Trent Richardson - Though less yards and touchdowns than Ball, he is a true threat and sole provider of the Alabama offense. I feel if Ball is a product of his offensive line and others could fill in for him while Richardson is one-of-a-kind and has similar stats as well.
3) Andrew Luck - Turned Stanford around and is a special player who couldn't be replaced. Not to best stats and that's why he gets third here but I give major points because of him being irreplacable.
Potential #2: Tyrann Mathieu - Though late to the race, his stats are pretty damn good. I would have placed him #2 but honestly, I don't know enough about him to make a decision. His tackles seem too high to the point where he isn't a lockdown corner like Peterson or Amukamara were, but truthfully I don't know. He's had a bizillion 'Heisman moments' with his stripped fumbles for touchdowns and clutch returning game for the TD.

Part of my response is to move away from the notion that only a player on a national title contender should be considered.

Just waching the things RGIII did this year...
On that one TD he threw that bounced off the intended reciever to a deeper reciever, I am convinced he was actually upset. That he really did want to know what it was like to fail.
December 10th, 2011 at 6:00 PM ^
RG3 does throw a really nice deep ball when it is not tipped.
December 10th, 2011 at 11:08 AM ^
That is bonkers in my mind.

Luck
RGIII

I just saw the statistical breakdown yesterday, and when compared to Ingram's heisman year, Richardson is pretty much equal or ahead, so that may explain the extra attention.
Nevertheless, my vote would still be for RG3.
December 10th, 2011 at 11:08 AM ^
1) RG3
2) Honey Badger
3) Ball (with that many more TD's than Richardson I have to put him up there)

That's how I think it will end up. In my ballot, I change out Richardson with Ball.

Jordan Kovacs for heisman!
In all seriousness though,
1. RG3
2. Ball
3. Luck
I don't want Matheiu to get close to winning. Yes, he was fantastic, but the defensive heisman loses its luster when its not just Woodson.

1) RG3

Can someone please explain a rationale for giving it to Trent Richardson? I've yet to see/hear anything remotely satisfying, and I'm genuinely curious.
December 10th, 2011 at 11:29 AM ^
He plays for Alabama. that's pretty the reason why he is getting as much love as he does. honestly, I think he is one of the most overrated heisman candidates. it's unfortunate that there is such an ess eeeee seeeee lovesfest that could rob rg3 of an award.
December 10th, 2011 at 11:34 AM ^
Have you watched richardson play (not being rude)? He has very good stats but the way he breaks tackles is very immpresive.
December 10th, 2011 at 11:48 AM ^
I've seen plenty of him. If I were an NFL exec drafting a running back would I take him? Sure. I just don't see the resume this year to justify it.
December 10th, 2011 at 12:05 PM ^
Richardson had a better year than Ingram had two years ago.
December 10th, 2011 at 12:10 PM ^
that's not saying much.
December 10th, 2011 at 12:13 PM ^
Ball: 275 carries, 1759 yards, 6.4YPC, 32TD/ 20 receptions, 255 yards, 12.8YPC, 6TD
Richardson: 263 carries, 1583 yards, 6.0YPC, 20TD/ 27 receptions, 327 yards, 12.1YPC, 3TD
Ball leads Richardson in every running category, plus has more yards per catch and more receiving touchdowns. It's a travesty if Richardson gets it; Balls numbers are way better and Wisconsin probably played a more difficult schedule than Alabama.
December 10th, 2011 at 12:19 PM ^
There is no way Wisconsin played a more difficuly schedule than Alabama. If it wasn't for Beilima being the douche he is, Ball would have 10 less tds than he does.
December 10th, 2011 at 12:29 PM ^
I know this is a bit of a secret, but the SEC suuuuuuuuucks this year.
December 10th, 2011 at 12:29 PM ^
They've both beaten only three ranked teams in four tries, and beyond Alabama/PSU, I don't see much OOC difference.
Alabama: Kent State, PSU, Georgia Southern, North Texas
Wisconsin: UNLV, Oregon State, NIU, South Dakota
Sagarin has Alabama's SOS at 5, Wisconsin at 12, even with a pretty big SEC bias in his computers. I wouldn't say there's a clear cut answer here, and Ball's numbers are way beyond Richardson's, whether Beilema is a dick or not.
December 10th, 2011 at 12:38 PM ^
Ball also got an extra game to pad his stats. I think your underestimating the SEC defenses. The SEC is not as good as years past but there defenses are filled with future NFLers
December 10th, 2011 at 12:43 PM ^
I think you're overestimating SEC defenses, especially those outside of, oh, I don't know, LSU and Alabama. LSU who Richardson had 0 TDs against and Alabama which, well, I don't need to explain that to you.
December 10th, 2011 at 1:45 PM ^
Montee Ball's 4th Quarter TDs:
- 5 seconds into the 4th when up 28-0, Hoke would have done the same
- Up 41-17 against Nebraska, Hoke basically did do the same
- Down 7 to MSU, obvious
- Up 35-13 against Minnesota with 9 minutes left, not really that bad, but worst of the bunch
- Up 21-17 against Illinois, obvious
- Down 8 and down 5 to MSU in the BTCG
Trent Richardson's 4th Quarter TDs:
- Up 20-3 against PSU, Hoke would do the same
- Up 27-0 against North Texas, same as Balls first
- Up 24-10 against Florida, fine
- Up 30-6 on Tennessee, see Minnesota above
- Up 10-0 on MSU, fine
So Montee Ball had 2 more 4th quarter TDs, but actually scored less in blowouts than Richardson. So how did he benefit from Bret being a douche?
