To Whom Should the #1/#2 Jerseys be Awarded?
As the title states, who gets awarded the #1 & #2 jerseys next yr? Just about all of the season is hashed. Will it be no one again (besides Vincent Smith) or...
- #1 contenders: Roundtree, Gallon, Stonum
- #2 contenders: Floyd, Countess
I think this would be an interesting question for Heiko to pose at a press conference, but not until after the bowl game. Any time before that and we'll get coach speak. Anyway, your predictions?
Is the two for any DB? If so, Kovacs, otherwise, Countess.

should get #1, no matter how good he is. Prove yourself for a year and then you get it.
November 25th, 2011 at 9:38 AM ^
you do realize that braylon was the only WR who switched to the #1 jersey. everyone else (terrell, carter, butterfield) wore it from their freshman year.
November 25th, 2011 at 10:23 AM ^
And it is now an endowed scholarship for an outstanding receiver.
Times have changed.
#1 being given to freshmen is no longer the case.
November 25th, 2011 at 3:07 PM ^
Derrick Alexander also switched, though he only wore his other jersey as a redshirt.

If you have to ask who should get the number, then no one should get the number.
November 25th, 2011 at 5:25 AM ^
Seconded. I'm sorry but no one has shown the potential to be awarded any of those numbers just yet
November 25th, 2011 at 6:26 AM ^
Countess shows the potential for the #2. The number 2 was said to go to the best Corner or else i would say Kovacs. As far as the #1 jersey goes sadly i have to agree that nobody has shown the potential.
Giving it to a freshman.... sure if the guy shows all the charactaristics of someone worthy of the jerseys. Those are some big shoes to fill tho
November 25th, 2011 at 3:08 AM ^
Blake Countess by his junior year. I'm calling it.
November 25th, 2011 at 3:12 AM ^
I agree.
No one currently on the team is worthy of the #1 yet, although that may have more to do with our offense not being a strong passing team than their abilities.
November 25th, 2011 at 3:30 AM ^
#2 should definitely be Countess.
#1 I don't think anyone has separated themselves enough to have earned it. Though if Gallon can make his invisibility cloak work more often I think he'd be next in line/
November 25th, 2011 at 3:13 AM ^
It doesn't matter what jersey number one wears because of the new math.

None for the #1 jersey but the potential that Countess is showing this year he could very well earn the #2 jersey by his junior year.
November 25th, 2011 at 5:27 AM ^
No one has impressed enough to earn it. You could blame Denard's passing but even taking noten of that, no one has dominated enough. Hemingway has been the closest, but he's graduating. Gallon has been impressive but not consistently enough. Roundtree has been neither great nor bad this year, just good. Kovacs for #2 but I'd like to see them wait and give it to Countess in 2 years.

What about #21? That's the new WR Legacy number, right? Junior's a senior.
If I were making the decidions (not what I think will happen):
#2 - Kovacs for his senior year. He deserves this for so many reasons! Hopefully Countess the following year. I'm 100% OK giving #2 to a safety.
#1 - X
#21 - possibly Roy Roundtree. He'll be our best WR, and a senior.
We have two WR #'s now so I think we should be a little more slack on passing these out. To me, #1 is still The Elite jersey, with #21 a slightly easier jersey to earn.
November 25th, 2011 at 11:20 AM ^
Roundtree seems to have built a reputation on two football games his freshman year, he has had more disappointing plays than good the past 2 years. Too many drops, and yes I realize Braylon dropped many routine balls, but he made spectacular catches on a regular basis and was a true game changer. I don't see anyone deserving of either the #1 or #21 right now.
November 25th, 2011 at 6:27 AM ^
I will entrust that decision to the staff. Personally, there is some more work that needs to be done before we talk about #1, but as for #2, maybe Countess or Kovacs.
November 25th, 2011 at 7:05 AM ^
Retire the whole idea. I like the idea of recognizing a player's contribution, but Hoke (with his apparently low-maintenance personality) doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who likes to publicly hold some players above others.
Also, I can't ponder this topic without thinking of BRAYLON EDWARDS. (I mean bad Braylon, not the one of the '04 Michigan State game and all the other marvelous on-field contributions.)
November 25th, 2011 at 7:49 AM ^
Think of Carter. That way you don't have to think of the bad side.
November 25th, 2011 at 7:26 AM ^
#1 to Denard
November 25th, 2011 at 9:39 AM ^
this better not be another one of those "denard should play receirver" posts!!!
November 25th, 2011 at 2:29 PM ^
Braylon said that Denard should get it.
November 25th, 2011 at 7:31 AM ^
this year with no one getting #1 (as many posters have stated). However, Jasper's reason for retiring the whole idea made sense. Maybe the idea isn't retired, rather responsibility given to the team to select. Not sure about this, just thinking out loud. Btw, 1 day. I love being on Central time and having games start at 11am! GO BLUE!
November 25th, 2011 at 10:03 AM ^
I wouldn't have the team decide. If the team decides feelings would definitely get hurt. Because take, Roundtree and Stonum, both up for the #1 hypothetically. The team comes into vote, Stonum gets the nod from his teammates and 'Tree is feeling like "WTF mates?". Or the #2 gets selected to be worn by Countess, Floyd is like "Dang, I am not as good as this Freshmen. Weak Sauce".
Stuff like this can play with a guys head easily and can almost be a distraction. If the team chooses then it could potentially divide a lockerroom and right now, that is the last thing we want. Especially, since this team has come together SO well after all they have been through.
Just my two cents.
November 25th, 2011 at 7:49 AM ^
You have to be an All-American type player to get the NO. 1 jersey and there is no way anyone on this team deserves that.
The no. 2 jersey I dont think has been earned either yet, Clountess does have the best shot in the future, like someone said, probably his junior year.
November 25th, 2011 at 8:30 AM ^
"You have to be an All-American type player to get the NO. 1 jersey..." You do? Somebody tell Tyrone Butterfield that one; he will be pleased to hear it. If we are going to limit the #1 to only wide receivers and only with all-american potential, we might as well retire the number right now rather than give it out once every 10-15 years.
I thought Braylon giving a scholarship to the player who wears #1 was a great idea, but somehow this basic endowment has morphed into an ugly monster: now the #1 has to be a wide receiver (Braylon's initial gift did not specify that). Now it has to be a great player (Braylon's initial gift did not specify that). Now it has to be somebody who has played one or more seasons for Michigan wearing a different number (Braylon's initial gift did not specify that). Lately it seems like Braylon thinks that he has the right to veto the wearer of a Michigan uniform (Braylon's initial gift specified that he did not have that right). Now the #2 and even the #21 seem to be falling victim to the same idea that they must be "earned" by a player in a specific position.
This has all turned into something that is very un-Michigan, and I hate it. It is the opposite of "the team, the team, the team."

considered for these jerseys. I believe Braylon has that in writing about the No. 1 jersey. I don't think a player can prove he is worthy of the honor of waering either jersey until he is a junior at least.
Countess could get there and Kovacs has proven his mettle and deserves something, but I hold those two numbers in the highest esteem, I don't feel there is anyone currently worthy of that level of praise and esteem.

BEAT OHIO
that is all.

I'm not a fan of the #1/#2 jersey thing. It's a silly question for fans and a source of drama for the team. If I was Hoke, I probably would never let anyone wear the jersey just so I wouldn't have to deal with it.
November 25th, 2011 at 9:16 AM ^
Lets give a player who was suspened for a year the #1 jersey.
Gallon should wear number 128
Roundtree????
There is no WR on this roster yet that should wear it.
I personally am not a big fan of the legacy jersey deal. There will be a pissing match eventually on whose patch or multiple patches end up on the jersey.
Does anyone doubt that Braylon thinks he should have a patch on it when it comes back and will say something stupid about it........

It would be nice to see Hemingway wear the 1 jersey against Ohio. He's been a big play maker all year

DENARD realistically deserves the No.1..none of our recievers has been putting Braylon Edwards numbers...
Idk about No.2
November 25th, 2011 at 9:58 AM ^
I would say hold off on both jerseys for next year. 1 and 2 must be special players. Make them hungry for them, they must earn them.
November 25th, 2011 at 10:19 AM ^
No one has earned the #1 jersey yet. In my mind, the #1 needs to go to a WR that he other teams account for every week an he still makes plays. Through double teams and getting jammed like hell, he still makes catches. And he doesn't drop balls.

Countess might earn the #2 jersey, but not yet. Teams don't throw away from him yet. We don't line him up against other's best WRs yet.

In sum, no one is there yet.
November 25th, 2011 at 10:27 AM ^
Goes to Blake in 2 years, and #1 to diggs in 3 years
