Bad Calls of the Weekend Open Thread
I thought an open thread to discuss bad calls might be a good idea. I thought the M game was pretty well officiated, but when I saw this, I couldn't let it go.

How the heck does that stand?

Unreal. Just unreal. Toledo has played one HELLUVA OOC schedule this year, and deserved that win today.

Mike Sherman's (A&M) call to not give Christian Michael a single rushing play in the 2nd half after he averaged over 10yds/carry in the 1st half

They were dominating that game.

You have him in fantasy football.

Blackmon fumbling out of the end zone as he is about to score. Nobody even touched him! I'd be sick to my stomach if any UM player did that in a close game

Announcing understatement of the year thus far: "That... was not well done."
September 24th, 2011 at 11:08 PM ^
Don't worry, Michigan won't have a player like Blackmon any time soon.

Milk. Milk was a bad choice.

Deviled eggs that had been sitting in the sun. Looked good , tasted bad, treating my stomach worse.

You forgot to add the steak, and a bowl of fine jelly beans, raw.
September 24th, 2011 at 9:48 PM ^
That's unbelievable. They can literally see that it wasn't good, but they can't overturn the point?
September 24th, 2011 at 9:52 PM ^
The Big East apparently issued some kind of statement, but I haven't read/seen it yet. But it obviously doesn't give Toledo the "W."

The only thing that I can say to defend them is that there was another camera angle from which it looked like it was good. The shot from that angle was of a poorer quality than the one posted above, though.

That and the S. Carolina/Vanderbilt interception where both guys had possesion, and it was given to the defense. It wasn't even reviewable. It didn't end the game for a team like that Toledo call.

There was no excuse to miss that call. That was a gift for Syracuse if ever I saw one.

Refs suck. Toledo deserves better.
September 24th, 2011 at 10:05 PM ^
After studying the videos of the Syracuse extra point attempt at 2:07 of the fourth quarter, we have concluded that the ruling on the field that the kick passed between the uprights was incorrect, and that the replay official made an error in failing to reverse that ruling. In reviewing the video, we have determined that the angle from behind the kicking team shows conclusively that the ball passes outside the right upright.
"Our review of the process determined that the replay official mistakenly focused his attention on the sideline angle, which proved to be distorted. We are confident that our officiating staff will learn from this situation in order to prevent a reoccurrence."
(from http://espn.go.com/blog/bigeast)
It's not even particularly conciliatory. Basically, "Yah we screwed up, whatever" If Toledo was Michigan (or really any nationally-followed school with a large contingent of fans) there would be MASSIVE outrage over this and then some. I can't even imagine (and don't really want to) the meltdown on this board (or any Michigan board) if Michigan lost after something like that.

Back when Drew Brees was playing for Purdue, I remember they were playing Georgia in a bowl game. Purdue kicked a field goal that was good but both refs ruled it wide right because they were blinded by the sunlight. The commentators and everyone else in the stadium knew it was actually good. That ended up being the difference in a 3 point Georgia win. The Boilers got majorily screwed in that game but I don't remember much of an uproar.
Quite different from today, however. There was no review back then and refs don't have to worry about sunlight in the Carrier Dome.

Dear Wolverine Historian:
I don't know why you and everyone else are so worked up over this. It's a known fact that officials ALWAYS get the call right on kicks.
Sincerely,
Mike Lantry Class of 74

Just one more reason why the Big East should no longer exist as a football conference. Pathetic.

There was an interception called for SC when it was clearly simultaneous possession and should have been vandy ball. They reviewed it and confirmed the call on the field. Drove my vandy fiancee mad.

Picked a bad day to sniff glue.

Bad day to sniff glue? Or bad day to quit sniffing glue?

Replay officals are often retired field officals, their eyesight might not be what it once ways.

On a related note, did it seem like that for the first time today, the jumbotron was being used to specifically highlight penalties (or non-calls that should have been penalities)? I mean, obviously in the past they've shown replays, but this was more specific. Like the SDSU sweep that went for about ten yards around Woolfolk... they put up a clip that was specifically focused on Woolfolk and then froze it with a good shot of the SDSU blocker hauling on his jersey.

That was an upsetting play. I remember the TV announcers berating him for losing contain on that play and then the replay showing obvious holding.
