if there are any Caleb Porter/Rico Blasi types out there we can grab. Guys at small schools, who consistently put out great teams, who might be enticed to leave for a school with the name/prestige and money of Michigan, even though they were the BMOC at their old school and had built a powerhouse and (in Rico's case) are alumni of where they coach. I don't think Michigan has ever/will ever have a shot at Porter or Blasi, but I feel like baseball has a small handful of guys like those, one of which might be convinced to come. The other thing is, if DB is going to be looking for somebody with prior HC experience, or if he might try to poach an assistant from a Florida/South Carolina/Florida State/LSU. I also wonder if any of those assistants would come to Michigan. As Brian pointed out, MSU's old coach left to be pitching coach at LSU and I feel like the Big Ten might be a place where baseball coaches come to die. They come up here, have limited success, just because of all the obstacles and all of a sudden nobody wants them as a head coach anywhere else. Whereas if they stay a highly-though-of assistant, they could still end up HC of a powerhouse. It's fair to say Michigan baseball won't ever be a powerhouse and list all the reasons why, but somehow there's still this part of my head that says "This is Michigan, fergodsakes!" and wants the team to make the CWS at least every once in a while. |
| 2 weeks 1 day ago | I don't like them. |
I like having jersey's differing in more than color, I don't like the bold, block M on the beginning of "Michigan", it makes it look unbalanced. I think the Big Chill jerseys are ugly, wolverines are not at all pretty animals, there is a reason Michigan doesn't put the little Wolverines on everything. They're great animals, but not at all aesthetically pleasing (yes, I think jerseys should be aesthetically pleasing, especially when you're gifted good colors to work with, like Michigan is). I understand and actually will go so far as to agree with putting them on Big Chill jerseys, because I know they're basically straight out of player-Red-era Michigan hockey, but not as an every weekend thing. Ideally, for me, the three would be the diagonal "Michigan", the block "M" and the script "Michigan". But it is what it is. I'm no fancy designer or marketer or athetic director, so all I have is my own opinion. |

I met a decent amount of non-revenue athletes during my years at Michigan and most of them were really impressie people. A couple were in my major and not only earned significantly higher GPAs than I did, but ended up winning a national championship along the way. And I have ton of respect for all of them. Not to rag on the revenue sport athletes, at all, but they tend to have what are widely considered to be relatively easy majors. There are exceptions, of course, and very few, if any, majors at Michgan are truly "easy" but it's there. Non-revenue athletes tend to have more varied majors and they perform great in them. While dealing with practicing (in most cases I know) the NCAA alloted 20 hours, the extra "voluntary" practice time, work-out sessions, team meetings, travel and everything else. And they do this for a sport that they know pretty much doesn't exist professionaly, or is very small (at least in the US), knowing that they're much more likely to play in front of 109 fans then 109,901 fans, knowing they get little to no exposure on TV, the news, whatever else, knowing that even if they won a NCAA title, most Michigan fans would gladly trade it for just one more football victory. And they still go out there and bust their butts to perform well for Michigan and for themselves. Most of them are very dedicated and most of the non-revenue sprts are really good. And remember, most scholarships outside of football and basketball are NOT full scholarships, in a lot of sports a 1/2 scholarship is reserved for the absolute best of the best. Revenue sport athletes, in almost cases, do a lot of the same things and obviously it's not really their fault that their sport is higher-profile, but non-revenue sport athletes do a lot of good things and deserve their moment in the spotlight a little bit, too. |

The band doesn't get scholarships. Or at least nothing from the AD. There are a few small scholarships funded by MMB alumni, but most of them do it for nothing but love of the MMB/Michigan football/what-have-you. Actually, it looks like they pay $125 to be in band (but to the University, not the AD, it's a lab fee) http://www.ro.umich.edu/tuition/classfees/fa12.php ENS 348, it IS a 2-credit class, so they get those. |
| 4 weeks 6 days ago | That doesn't even |
make sense. It costs money, we can't do it. The money they give us has to go to us. We're (apparently) not allowed to give our own money to the MMB becasue we can't? It's not like they can't afford to front 400k then get it back from Jerry World in the pay-out. If he was "no happier not having our band down there than anyone else", I feel like he would be less calling the band not going a "practical reality" and more "we're looking for other ways/methods of funding" something that opens the door and not just "too bad, so sad, I'm really chewed up about it too, oh drat. This is very, very sad." |

there's going to be a press release about it soon, but DB sold the banner for 1.3 million. But it's OK, he's going to replace with a new, spiffy banner, featuring #HASHTAGS!!!!! |

Consider my firmly against anything that involves more single-elimination hockey. This is pretty much the WCHA Final Five except sometimes in the Joe, which, there are way worse things, I guess. But play-off hockey in your home rink is special, even when it's against horrible teams. And single-elimination sucks. Maybe if/when the Big Ten hockey conference expands, they can put some campus sites and series in... |

The ESPN article about pot and football is called, "Lying in the Weed". Coincidence? |
| 5 weeks 3 days ago | I think I agree |
with the order of the severity of the incidents (and I did miss the stuff with Schenn before the Ashan hit). But I think your punishments are on the severe side. Nothing wrong with that, as long as they're clear and consistent, but I would say those are on the heave-handed side. Except for Carkner. In my opinion, he should be out for the play-offs, no matter how far they go and I would seriously consider adding something on to the beginning of the next season, especially if Ottawa loses to the Rangers. There is absolutely no place for that and I was incensed when I saw the replay. Also, I have no real interest in either Ottawa or the NYR, except for my desire to see Carl succeed. I would be very interested to hear Red's opinion (his honest one, not a PC, "I'm not the disciplinarian, he has a hard job blah blah blah blah blah" bull that they have to say to avoid fines) on the discipline handed out so far. He knows hockey as well or better than anyone and I think his only strong bias would be toward Carl and because I'm strongly biased towards Carl, I'm OK with that. |

obviously did not "aim high", like the guys during the Florida/NJ game intermission asserted. Carl is definitely a lover, not a fighter, I mean, look at that face! |
