MGoBlue.com's new look

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Was just reading a feature on MGoBlue, and as I clicked onto another sport the website looked completely different.

More social media, more ads.

Thoughts? I liked the all-Maize and Blue look better.

Sorry if this is a dumb thread.....one was posted on the last redesign and I don't know, I'm into graphic and web design since I'm going to school for it.

First thing I noticed that it was much better from the standpoint of selecting a sport to go to. Before if you wanted to select say women's softball, it was near impossible to click on the small line of text to select it. Now the selection choices are much easier even on a mobile device.

the new calendar of events.  Don't love it overall, looks very sanitized and you have to scroll down a country mile to get to the stuff at the bottom, but I suspect I'll get used to it.

Regarding more ads:

With adblock active it was clean.  When I paused adblock and refreshed (just to see what the 'lots of ads' comment was about)  I was smacked in the face with a few Big George's ads featuring way too much RED for a Michigan website.

Adblock is my friend.

Oddly enough I was also smacked in the face with a red ad, but mine was for Flagstar bank. Other than that the site was pretty bland. I'm not really a fan. I think the lack of dividing lines or sections makes the ads stick out even more than they would normally. There's way too much white on the screen for me, but others may feel differently.

Hopefully this one is better than the previous version on mobile devices. The "mobile version" seemed to lack 95% of the site's content, and trying to view the regular version was a nightmare, as the menus did crazy things...

roughly a 5-minute "short tour" of the new-look MGoBlue.com, I like it.  It'll take a little bit to get more accustomed to it, but it has a cleaner look  than it has had in quite a while.  I didn't turn adblock off for it (not that I ever did for the old site, either), but it was a lot easier on the eyes than before.

using the latest IE browser on my other computer.  Probably a pop up every 5 seconds.  Looks like the new marketing guy is working OT to squeeze more revenue out of everywhere he can.

All maize and blue makes for a really hard to look at website, so in terms of aesthetics, the new version is much better. Then again, ads plastered everywhere don't make for a great experience either... Haven't used it enough to know whether it's more functional/intuitive yet.

I've long been surprised at how such a great university can have such a lame website. This change does nothing to alter that opinion.

ads were no big deal.  and i read dave brandon's explanation of improving cell coverage in the stadium, and i didn't feel like he was trying to sell me a pizza.  it was....believable.

But the desktop version sucks. That ad in the middle of the screeen when you click is AWFUL.

They definitely when the iPad/Mobile route and you can easily see why it's a huge upgrade their, but again, the desktop look is horrendous.

to know I'm not alone.  (I was tempted but too cowardly.)   I think the new design is ugly and amateurish.  I'm not opposed to change and innovation, but here I'm in the "why fix what ain't broke?" school.

The old masthead was so much classier.  The new one has weird spacing between letters and letter sizes that aren't consistent enough or inconsistent enough to seem actually "designed."   Guys on this blog do better graphics work with their Paintshop and little or no budget.  And there's way too much white space for my taste.  Pale limited text, and having to cursor constantly to find what I'm looking for or even finish reading a sentence.

There.  I feel better telling someone.
