Gunner Kiel commits to Indiana
Possibly the biggest football recruiting commitment in Indiana history. Will make the "Leaders" division very interesting in the next 4 years.
JC Shurburtt- Nation's top quarterback Gunner Kiel commits to #Indiana per @SWiltfong247
This reminds me of when Tim Couch commited to Kentucky. Can anyone think of a top 1 or 2 national QB going to a similar program?
LeBron James and Dwyane Wade are two of the best players in the NBA. I suppose then, using your logic, Eric Spolestra one of the best coaches in the NBA.
Your analogy backfired on you. Are you saying that a coach who "led" a team to the NBA finals cannot be considered one fo the best coaches in the NBA? If so, you're wrong.
You're not really suggesting that the Miami Heat couldn't have won a conference championship without Eric Spoelstra, are you?
Doesn't end up being Pat Riley.
And you are assuming phil jackson wont take the job.
It really fits his style
I mean, he has to coach the best player in the League.
But Riley would have to go somewhere...I don't see those two getting along.
There are a few Nancys on this board who neg you on the spot.
wow, amazing pickup for them.
Holy cow, when was the last time IU picked up a football recruit with this amount of hype?
They've had some good players, but the only one who was a strong high school standout is Anthony Thompson that I know of.
As a Hoosier and an Indiana University graduate, I can assure you we have never had a recruit this big choose IU. The last time we were even respectable for more than a single year was during the Mallory era and Anthony Thompson, while a very good prospect, had nowhere near the hype Kiel does. Hell, most of my friends are excited when we geta borderline 3* at any position or even just a lot of dudes choosing IU, regardless of ranking.
Maybe we can finally win something besides the tailgate in the next four years!
I've been to a few IU games and tailgates and I have to disagree - IU doesn't even win tailgating. Not WINNING.
Get some linemen to protect your investment. A 5 Star drop back passer surrounded by 2.5* players is just a big juicy target for defensive ends.
See that glint in Tom Strobel's eye? That's him looking at 2 star linemen.
Does this mean the all the recruiting "experts" will drop his ranking since Indiana isn't a football powerhouse? Good luck in the future except when playing Michigan of course.
Hey Gunner, good luck buddy. Now Rod Smith can turn you into Denard...oh wait, you're a Pro Style QB.
I know but Sam Bradford was at...Oklahoma...with weapons and an OL.
Maybe the plan is to have him redshirt behind his brother for a year after his arrival.......Keep peace in the family plus maybe get him some more players knowing he will be there for 4 years after that....
Or at least 3 years. Likely he and his brother get along pretty well and that will make whatever goes on easier to deal with. Kind of a nice and safe and warm blanket for coming into college football....
Tandon Doss is probably wishing he could have played with kid...
Happy to see him go to IU. It helps the profile of the entire conference if they can improve and be more competitive (especially out of conference).
Maybe this will help their attendance. One player is not going to change that football program, but he will be the BMOC. They've had a decent offense for the last few seasons, but we all know what wins games and championships!
I applaud him for not going to any of our rivals!
Go Blue!
Shit. At least Indiana is in the Leaders division.
This, and the fact that we got Shane Morris comin in a year later, makes me alright with this. It is gonna be awkward for him and his bro though.
BEAT OHIO...and WISCONSIN.
And sparty... who is their protected crossover game.
The silver lining.
Interesting strategy - will have the reigns and attention of a major program with little worry of 4 and 5 star qbs coming in year after year behind him. If he can be a major agent of improvement for them he will have a great platform for his future. Good for Indiana - they need a little positive stuff every now and then.
New mgoblog post tomorrow morning:
"OT: Gunner Kiel drops to a two star"
I wonder if he'll make people forget Tim Clifford.
Under Lee Corso, he led Indiana to its first bowl game victory in the Holiday Bowl that year.
The UM diehard and, also, jerk inside me wants to say something extra sarcastic along the lines of 'hey, sounds like a real fighter,' etc.
But the less-jerky part of me realizes this is a young man with the biggest possible decision he'll ever make on his hands, and wanting above all else to find a place to call home. Must have been a gut-wrenching decision, especially when the final choice turns out to be Indiana. Football.
But if that's where he feels comfortable, good for him and I wish him luck. Except when we play him.
..down the drain.
If there has ever been one football recruit who could singlehandedly change the direction a program, this guy at Indiana would be it.
I prefer him going to Indiana over Alabama.
I'd rather have him end up at Indiana than, say, Notre Dame. Indiana could use a break anyway.
This rocks. Great for Indiana. If not Michigan, I would rather him be at Indiana.
Wouldn't it be grand if OSU/Penn State/ Wisconsin had to fear Indiana? This may start something there in my opinion.
Did we just see a recruiting voilation happen? Im stunned, I didnt think he'd go here, but I never thought he would go to Indiana.
There's a lot of reasons he'd go to Indiana. Close to home, family on the team, shot at early playing time, new coach who was a kickass OC, etc.
Weird to see a 5* QB go to Indiana but not as big a surprise in this case as some might think.
All the reasons ND should be kicking themselves in the ass! Gunner going to Indiana over ND would be the equivalent of Shane Morris announcing for the Chippewa's. Not sure what it was about ND that rubbed him the wrong way but WOW!~and GOOD!
Best tweet yet by EDSBS:
Gunner Kiel laughs. Takes off rubber mask. Is Tate Forcier. "San Jose State? SIIIIIIIKE." #QBFORCE
When in history has the #1 recruit in the nation - a quarterback to boot - committed to play at a program the likes of Indiana? This has got to be the "get" of a lifetime for IU's coach and the program in general. I knew kids that chose smaller-name schools because they felt that they would shine there but geez! Well, I guess he's chosen a place where he'll almost definitely be a starter and quickly. Something to be said for that, I guess. And Bloomington is a great campus. But still . . .
Heaps to BYU happened last year..
Yeah, but BYU has a pretty rich tradition of great QBs.
