OT: NFL Draft Day 2 Open Thread
OK, it's still early, but the board is slow, and I've had enough of Sportscenter reruns hearing what they think of round 1, and while Day 2 isn't as exciting as Round 1, there may be some interest (and it practically carries us right up to the Red Wings game start). So till they hit the podium, who were the winners and losers of day 1 to you?
I hope I'm wrong, and it's NOT off-topic, but I'm thinking our players don't get drafted till tomorrow. So the Pats are on the clock. And are probably working on trading it as we speak.
Yeah I see him having a Reggie Bush type of role. I'm not impressed with any of our other rb's either, but I think they can be productive if our o-line magically gets better at run blocking. The Young pick makes me believe we'll be a pass heavy offense unless we find a back to compliment Best. Tennessee did that with Chris Johnson and Lendale White when Schwartz was there.
Why on earth would we go for a WR in the 2nd round when we need OL/CBs that can contribute right away. Strange pick.
Mayhew's philosophy seems to be don't draft on need and his track record (Levy, Delmas) in the second/third rounds has been pretty good so far. I bet a lot of the corners they liked were taken in that 33-40 run on them.
They also had Ayers and Carter taken right before their pick.
Mayhew must be really confident on getting Houston back or has a plan during Free Agency. It's just too obvious a need to be neglected in the draft. Obviously, some being taken right before the pick probably influenced his decision. (I.e., avoid a Minnesota "derp" moment)
Not blown away by Titus Young, but we always seemed to lack that last receiver. If Young works out and takes some pressure off of Burleson and Calvin, this could be quite a good pick. Would've liked a CB, though.
What happened to drafting best player available.....young is good but def not the best player available at this time....they said they loved bowers when he came in for a visit draft him and let him learn from vanden bosch
Unfortunately for Bowers, his knee problems may end his career within 5 years in the NFL.
I like the pick. I'm not very impressed with Harris and all the good LBs were gone. I don't want to see Bryant Johnson anywhere near the field next year and Derrick Williams looks like a bust.
Bowers finally goes to the Bucs. 51st overall.
Tampa's d-line could be very scary in a few years. I think they're trying to one-up the Lions.
You're assuming that Bowers can play for a few years.
Hence the "could be".
Turned on the radio, and all the goodwill the Lions got from yesterday's pick went out the window with the pick today. They're getting fried By almost everyone.
Why? Compliments for Calvin and Best. Some good things are being said about their draft online.
Aren't at any position they've drafted for, which is excusable when you're getting top 5 talent, but not when you're getting a third WR that could have been had in the 3rd round. And follow it up with another top round RB after last year, when you have gaping holes at OLB, CB. And instead of moving up to get a RB they could have moved up for one of the CBs or LBs taken just before them in the round.
They'll still get their OLB and CB, whether it be in FA or later in the draft. Still some good players on the board that it was wise for them to wait on.
But the free agent OLB class is extremely weak. And as the rounds get lower, it's diminishing returns. They must be thinking to get what they can now, and target those other needs next year.
here we go! i love that pick!!
What does that pick say about Best? Another curious one.
It actually makes a lot of sense. Jahvid Best isn't an everydown back and in today's NFL you need more than one runningback, unless you have one named Adrian Peterson, Chris Johnson, or MJD
I agree with what you say, but I'm not sure that the second round is the place to address that. There's a lot of history of lower round backs being very good. I'm thinking there are more needs.
Leshoure? Really? Hmm...
Uhm, yeah...2nd round back ups for the Lions.
1,2 punch at the RB position. Good pick. Need a stable of backs.
Everyone has great job security with WCF, so they can get who they like and worry about wins down the road. Still sounds like a better draft than New England.
I don't like these picks at all.
Here's a write up from ESPN draft tracker:
Pro Football Weekly draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki: Jim Schwartz has been seeking explosion on both sides of the ball, and in Young he lands that type of receiver. The greatest concerns about Young: his sinewy, narrow frame and corresponding durability, and his overall immaturity. He turned off a lot of teams in the interview process and his lack of attention to detail could drive his position coach crazy. He might supplement Stefan Logan in the return game.
That review is less than stellar.
And now the Lions just picked up Leshoure? What the hell? Haven't we seen this movie before (taking WRs and RBs)?
I trust that Schwartz can evaluate the needs of HIS team (you know, the one he spends the entire year working with) and goals more than Mel Kiper. Evaluating a draft class on draft day is about as pointless as judging Brady Hoke before coaching a game.
Where's the fun in that?!

Don't ruin it with your cold hard logic.
I've heard is like Deshawn Jackson, but not nearly as fast.
I'm actually excited about Leshoure. It's a nice 1 2 punch. Leshoure is the every down back the Lions were missing IMHO. Best is the kind of back that can break a game open if used correctly but Leshoure looks like he could be a work horse.
I can see the rationale in taking a WR and RB, but at the same time, when Mayhew said he looks for the best player available and doesn't always look at need, I didn't think he meant he would take the opposite of need. So far we've taken a BPA and two nice-to-haves. I mean, did anyone look at the roster last year and think, "man, this would be a playoff team if we had a third wideout to go with Burleson and Johnson"?
In the 2nd round!
Mouton second round?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Mouton!!!!!
congrats Jonas. San Diego baby.
HOLY SHIT Mouton drafted by Chargers at 61.
Mouton drafted by the Chargers at pick #61!
Is no longer Off-topic.
That was a lot earlier than I expected him to go. Kinda like him in a 3-4.
Mike Martin wants to smack Mel Kiper.
LOL yeah. Kiper is an idiot, saying "Mouton was the best player on that Michigan defense"
2nd round for Mouton? Nice, that's nice.
There's irony for you.. Jonas to San Diego and Hoke to AA. This will be a great place for him to develop!

Irony? Really?
The Lions can find a corner or servicable left tackle in the free agent market. They are taking value where they see it, which I like.
But I think they really believe they have a chance of landing Nnamdi Asomugha in free agency. The price will be very high, but what CB wouldn't love to play behind the line the Lions will be putting on the field.
But why do they think they have a better shot than anyone else? They have that much cap room?
