Your daily Harbaugh to the NFL pot stir: Chicago edition
Here we go...
Quick summary: IF McCaskey and Kevin Warren have the stones, Jim should be the only guy on their shopping list.
Plenty of attractive draft picks, intriguing roster mix, new stadium in the way.
Would be the biggest thing to hit Halas Hall since Ditka.

Good Lord. He's staying.
Just stop.
December 5th, 2023 at 3:04 PM ^
darn right franz, and i've got $2 riding on it.
besides, michigan is about to pay him 8 figures/yr and NFL doesn't like those numbers for coaches. too bad, so sad, no harbaugh-to-NFL dreams for our enemies.

I've come to the sad conclusion that this is pretty telling.... I've heard of deals being signed and not released but I just can't see it. There is only one reason its not signed, sealed and delivered.
December 5th, 2023 at 4:14 PM ^
i have not 'spent' the $2, so to speak, and i have emotional support systems in place should it come to pass that it is tragically taken away from me. with counseling, therapy, strong family ties, in time i would recover.
by the same token though, i filed a $2 lien on your $500 gambling winnings (beautiful story, taking all those ohio fans' money. absolutely beautiful) and you had better have put that $2 in a secure, interest bearing account until this deal is decided. otherwise, i might have to call in some muscle....
December 5th, 2023 at 4:20 PM ^
Ya gotta love consistency.
December 5th, 2023 at 4:43 PM ^
MGrow; I'm really not trying to poke at you too much here (maybe gently)... but man, you are almost always wrong about this stuff. But you get so emotional and outspoken in your opinions. I just wish more people would step back, and really assess things from a cold, logical perspective, while keeping JH's personality traits in mind.
I'd be happy to wager you, if you like? I see no way JH leaves at this point. One nice crisp two dollar bill.
December 5th, 2023 at 5:00 PM ^
Ahhhh Timmaay, my battle-worn foe from MgoWars of long ago (I always have to double look at your name to make sure I spell it somewhat correctly)
A few non-emotional points I'd like to make:
1. I do think he'll stay but only if the NCAA doesnt do something monumentally stupid like suspend him for a significant length of time
2. The insiders have been the ones wrong, not me. They're the ones that have literally been saying the extension is "any day now" since the beginning of the 2021 season. I just pointed out their respective errors in predicting the extension
3. I could see him leaving if we win it all this year knowing he did what he set out to do and that the program is in very, very good shape. Because he's definitely going to get multiple offers to do so from NFL teams.
Do I want him to leave? Hell no. I did after 2020 but I was wrong as were many others.
Do I think he'll go? Probably not. But he'll have offers absolutely nobody knows what that crazy fucker is thinking. I guess we'll see.
December 5th, 2023 at 5:22 PM ^
If he wins it all for us, he can ride off into the sunset in peace. Go with our blessing.
He will have given us all that we could ask for and then some.
He will be a Michigan legend they'll talk about 100 years from now.
(IMO, that is what he is doing and why no contract has been signed. Harbaugh is waiting to see how he does in the CFP. If he wins it all, he will go to the NFL. He might even go to the NFL if he just wins the Rose Bowl. That is what is going on.)
December 5th, 2023 at 5:56 PM ^
He’s about to turn 60. If someone wants to offer him an NFL job, there’s no guarantee he’d get another if he turns it down, and remember he didn’t’ t receive an offer during his prior flirtations. He’s made no secret that a Super Bowl win is his ultimate goal. Im sure an NCAA title would be his second biggest goal, but if he’s ever going to win one, this is his best shot, with his best team, in a year when both Georgia and Alabama aren’t quite what they usually are. If it doesn’t happen this year, it will probably never happen. Add to all of it that he’s in the crosshairs of both the Big 10 and the NCAA. I don’t think it matters whether Michigan wins another game this year. If he gets an offer, he’s gone.
December 5th, 2023 at 9:15 PM ^
Honestly, if Harbaugh left right now he would ride off into the sunset with all our blessing. He has brought us from the depths to the heights (where we currently sit at #1).
However, I think that Ryan Day and Tom Petitti have greatly increased the chance that he stays long term. Now Harbaugh has a grudge. Plus, the Michigan administration and fans have given Harbaugh what he wants -- love and loyalty. I suspect that Santa Ono's stalwart defense of Harbaugh means a ton to our beloved coach.
As for turning 60, you would think at that age one realizes he will not accomplish everything he wants but needs to choose what he loves. I think Jimmy will do this and stay with his boyhood team, the Michigan Wolverines.
December 5th, 2023 at 5:29 PM ^
Fair enough. Appreciate the reply.
I try to not fight the internet wars these days. It's not healthy.
December 5th, 2023 at 10:00 PM ^
what’s being wrong got to do with anything :-). emotional, short sighted, cock sure, with a touch of hubris is generally considered the proper form
December 5th, 2023 at 6:38 PM ^
I think you mmisssed an M.
Winning it all seems like the most likely reason he would consider leaving.
Im not sure he has ever been happier coaching these kids.
December 5th, 2023 at 7:18 PM ^
Right but you're always in the negative boat on Harbaugh leaving.
December 5th, 2023 at 3:57 PM ^
you've got $3 riding on it..... see below. I took the liberty of piggy backing your wager. (i'll cover the third George Washington, if need be)
December 5th, 2023 at 4:11 PM ^
this is getting out of hand, like michael jordan and charles barkley betting on the golf course. oh my.
December 5th, 2023 at 6:31 PM ^
Their bets had a few more 0’s than these bets.
December 5th, 2023 at 3:01 PM ^
Seems like Ryan Day would be a good fit from what I'm hearing.
December 5th, 2023 at 3:19 PM ^
2024 USMNT would be an even better fit for Day.
December 5th, 2023 at 3:21 PM ^
At least then crying would serve a tactical advantage
December 5th, 2023 at 3:23 PM ^
Is there crying in flag football?
December 6th, 2023 at 9:18 AM ^
Shit I just watched this 11 times.
December 5th, 2023 at 9:21 PM ^
Are you trying to get a PI firm investigating the Lions?
December 5th, 2023 at 3:02 PM ^
Counterpoint: If the Bears do follow a lot of the mock drafts and take Caleb Williams first overall, he's gone on record stating he wants part ownership of whoever drafts him. I do not see Harbaugh vibing with that type of energy because it screams of entitlement. I think that alone, plus his demeanor to stick it to the man through winning, should be enough to deter him and keep him here at Michigan. But who am I but one person behind a keyboard?
December 5th, 2023 at 3:04 PM ^
He has not gone on record 😂 I think that had the same amount of credibility as Harbaugh taking this job.
December 5th, 2023 at 3:09 PM ^
Per multiple sources, the representatives of USC quarterback Caleb Williams had been making it known to prospective agents that Williams wants partial ownership of the team that selects him in 2024, if he declares for the draft.
I know there's been a lot of discourse around the validity of "sources" being thrown around in articles due to Signgate, but this is one of many articles that were put out this year referencing the very point.
December 5th, 2023 at 3:20 PM ^
Well, at least he "gotcha" with the laughing/crying emoji, which is always a slick burn 🙄
December 5th, 2023 at 3:26 PM ^
"Not So" MightyMatt?
December 5th, 2023 at 3:20 PM ^
Don't know ithat I would classify this as "on record"
December 5th, 2023 at 3:11 PM ^
I haven't seen a quote from him but it's been reported by a lot of different outlets.
EDIT: Ballislife beat me to it and with a link.
December 5th, 2023 at 4:14 PM ^
Probably a pretty solid reason you haven't seen a quote from him going "on record"
December 5th, 2023 at 4:22 PM ^
Because it wasn't actually him that said it, but "reportedly" it was his "camp." In any event, it's not happening since the NFL already said no to Rodgers trying the same thing.
December 5th, 2023 at 3:05 PM ^
I see Williams following in the long line of awesome college QBs who did not pan out in the NFL. Hard to think of someone with the mentality of "I want ownership to play for you" having ever worked out in the NFL. He seems neither humble nor tough.
December 5th, 2023 at 3:11 PM ^
He's another Lincoln Riley System QB.
/ducks
December 5th, 2023 at 3:42 PM ^
What are you ducking for? Williams is looking like he's going to be Riley's third QB drafted #1 overall, and the previous two have underperformed to say the least. Actually Hurts is the only one that's truly shined (forgot he had transferred to OU), and he was a late second round pick. So it's not exactly going out on a limb here...
December 5th, 2023 at 4:03 PM ^
Mostly a joke, but CW has been getting the Generational label with folks like Mayfield saying that it's reasonable to compare him to Mahomes. Predicting that a top-five QB will bust is also the logical default given the hopium NFL teams apply to those picks.
December 6th, 2023 at 9:22 AM ^
Caleb doesn't need to be humble. He wears #13, walks under 3 ladders, on the cover of a video game, and has a black cat.
December 5th, 2023 at 3:12 PM ^
I think it was Williams' dad that said that thing about wanting ownership right? Also, isn't that illegal in the NFL/all sports leagues? Like what if he gets to own a part of the Bears and then is traded to the Lions?
December 5th, 2023 at 3:23 PM ^
If ownership is allowable in the first place, I would guess that a trade would present a requirement to sell the portion or Bears' ownership prior to the trade being approved.
December 5th, 2023 at 3:33 PM ^
That's the thing that is so crazy, it's NOT allowed at all. Infact, it's not allowed in any of the 4 major US sports (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL). Basically, as I have read, it violates the Salary Cap in the 4 major sports, among other issues.
Now obviously, once you retire, you can buy a stake in a Team (Jordan, Magic Johnson have done so) but you cannot as an active player.
This is why after everything that has happened this season, if I was a GM, i wouldn't take Williams at #1. For starters, he didn't have a great season and played pretty bad in some of the more "important" games on USC schedule. 2nd, the fact that this story even saw the light of day tells me that either Williams just doesn't get it, or you are dealing with a Lavar Ball situation 2.0. Either way, I don't think he is worth the headache.
December 5th, 2023 at 4:12 PM ^
Here is a good article from Yahoo summing up why this can't happen:
https://sports.yahoo.com/caleb-williams-wants-own-nfl-150000323.html
December 5th, 2023 at 5:59 PM ^
No one’s going to give him part ownership. I’m not sure why anyone would think that’s even a remote possibility.
December 5th, 2023 at 3:19 PM ^
Countercounterpoint: Jim could take MHJ and JJ.
December 5th, 2023 at 4:25 PM ^
But he'd still have to deal with terrible owners. That didn't work out well for JH in the past.
December 5th, 2023 at 5:19 PM ^
Let's see...
Against Oregon - QBR 68.4
Against ND - QBR 57.8
Has thrown ... zero ... passes in the NFL or against an NFL defense.
Franchise ownership... Sure, why not just give him an option to own the entire franchise after his team's second win of the season.
How will his career stats compare with those of JaMarcus Russell. IIRC, he was a "can't miss", franchise changing QB too.
