Wife Day 2022 – Appreciating whoever supports your fandom

Submitted by mi93 on October 19th, 2022 at 9:44 AM

With the bye week (and while I appreciate two weeks of “Hate” week), the past weekend previews of the bye week, inclusive of a pic of Denard carrying shopping bags was very much a favorite of mine.  For those who don't know or haven't seen in awhile, I believe these are the originals: The Preview, and the precursor to FFFF.

In honor of those that put up with our passion (or confirm and participate), please share an appreciation of someone that tolerates your rabid fandom.

In my case, my spouse, and an anecdote of how she gets me…Sunday night, a four-lane road, a red light, but the left-middle lane is car-free and as I change to the lane, green light.  BOOM, through the light and gone before anyone else leaves the intersection, and nothing but grey pavement in front of me.

Me: Wow.  That was as easy as running on Penn St.

Spouse: <crying laughing emojis>

Me: Hit the hole and gone.

Spouse: Nothing close behind us, nothing in front of us, headed for the score.

Who gets you?  (Other than those of us here.)

And have a great rest of the week!  Go Blue

My wife will come with me to get lunch, knowing full well that I will be entranced in the game.  She orders for us and reminds me to eat while I am fully focused on the TVs above the bar.  She realizes that I spend all summer on the yard and that this is my reward.  I am a lucky guy.

My best 1/2 is also a big Michigan fan, although she was born in NY and lived the majority of her life in PA.

When we were dating she gifted me a Denard jersey.... Denard promptly got injured.... She later purchased a Mitch McGary jersey.... a couple games later Mitch got injured.... I told her NO MORE JERSEYS!

I got covid during the bye week so my wife and daughters locked me in the basement for the week.  They are definitely enjoying the sports free week.

My wife is spectacular.  Nothing is as enjoyable as heading to Ann Arbor and hosting a tailgate for friends, our children (both current students at Michigan), handing out - regardless of how warm or cool it is, and enjoying the spirit of Maize & Blue fans.

During "away" weekends, I'll hang out and enjoy the game in its entirety, and - she supports every bit of it.

There are many lucky men in this world, none more fortunate than me.

My wife was an early Michigan woman athlete (1976).  She has never forgiven Bo for kicking her team out of their reserved gym so the football team could work out in bad weather.

She won't go to any football games, but she will watch them on tv, is happy when they win and sad when they lose.  Loved the 1997 National Championship.

Spring of 2021 I began dating a woman who has been an MSU fan due to geographical mandates (grew up in Grand Ledge). I stayed down at her place on November 26th of that year, and made the drive from Lansing-ish back up to home in Saginaw on the 27th. I think the feelings I had that morning will stick with me forever - it was gently snowing, and I knew if it kept up OSU would have trouble playing in it. Also, we were driving separate vehicles back to my place and she had been running behind that morning, so we set off around 11:30 am and drove through a good chunk of the first quarter. So, while I was nervously excited about the snow, I was also quietly (and then when we got into those separate vehicles, loudly) pissed that I had to listen to that first bit of the game on the radio. We got back to my place just after Cade had thrown that interception in OSUs end, and happily watched the rest of the game in the comfort of what's now our home. That day she proclaimed herself to be a born again Michigan fan and my new good luck charm.

I was previously married for 11 years, and spent most of it in agony. Swore I'd never do it again. The difference between my first one and this one is night and day. Bought a ring a couples weeks ago and plan on giving it to her November 25th this year, her birthday. I've got some inkling that it's going to be a really stellar Thanksgiving weekend this season.

I married a fan of MSU.  We dated in HS, and I knew her dad was an MSU fan.  She was more of a casual fan.  I think she pretended to like football because I played football and I liked to watch football.  She used to wear a pair of MSU running shorts that looked great on her, I could forgive the MSU logo.

We married in April of 1988.  On our first anniversary, we were at Jimmy's Famous Seafood in Baltimore.  Over her shoulder I could see the TV over the bar.  It was the Final Four game UM vs Illinois.  We all know that UM won on a tip in.  During our "romantic" dinner she noticed that I was distracted.  Looked over her shoulder saw the game and said "is this going to happen every year on our anniversary" and I replied "I hope so".

Fast forward to 1991.  We take a overnight trip for our anniversary.  We are at the hotel deciding where to go to dinner.  UM is going to play Cincinnati in the FF.  She says "let's just go to the hotel bar and watch the game and have some fun."  That's when I knew I got her.

2000 UM at Northwestern.  A-Train fumbles, she hurls a fork at the TV.  Transition complete.  100% die hard UM fan.

2005 PSU at UM. Had friends over to watch they game.  PSU fans.  Ref puts one second on the clock.  She kneels over a footstool like a makeshift alter.  Henne hits Manningham in the end zone.  She celebrates and talks a bit of trash to our friends.  I was beaming with pride at how I had changed her from a casual MSU fan to a full blown UM fanatic.

That NWU game. I was watching it an apartment on South Packard. I sat there in a dumbfounded stupor for 10 minutes. Then I got up and walked away.  To this day, those apartment buildings still upset me. That game made me lose some of my lore about Michigan. Never lost my fandom. Just it was the damn A-Train. He never fumbled again in his life.

My wife gets a lot of credit for putting up with me during the season. I was unable to get the lawn mowed last Saturday morning, because of other chores I had to get done around the house.  I told her I would get it mowed after the game.  While I was watching the game she got the mower out and mowed the entire lawn.  She is the best!!!

I know it's all about give and take, but this season, I don't feel compelled to be self-sacrificial since I haven't caught more than a quarter of any game live.  And that's just fine since it's meant doing things with the kids and handling other family demands.  Hopefully things will free up later on this year or next at worst... This weekend is more of the same, but at least it's up north and the weather should be nice.  That's her happy place anyway.

Isn't every day wife day?

Y'all are lucky. My wife is always trying to get me to prioritize anything over watching Michigan games, as if my position on this would somehow change after a decade of marriage (she knew what she was getting into when we were dating).  She'll schedule trips, activities, whatever she can on fall Saturdays. She'll even try to have the world's lengthiest conversations with me when the game is on even though she's not said hardly anything else to me that morning.  Unbelievable.

I do love her immensely, just not more than Michigan when they're playing.

My wife comes from a rabid sports family, but sometimes jokes that her only disappointment in marrying me was that she thought she had found a guy who "wasn't interested in televised sports." I only discovered Michigan sports after I moved to San Francisco, and started going to a bar to watch the 97 team as it made its run. Now I'm pretty nuts, for hoops, too, from the Beilein period on.

Anyway, she was an all-state tennis player and jock, knows enough about sports to have a pretty nuanced view, and we also bonded with my daughter over FSU's perennially great women's soccer teams. She's down on Harbaugh right now for his abortion stance, but otherwise always ready to hear me tell a story, watch a highlight reel, sit down if I beg her to when there's something on. Through her and my daughter I've started watching a lot more women's sports, too, and--honestly--at this stage I'm happy to watch the UM's teams in anything.

dear wife is a socal girl so her intro to michigan and michigan sports was our dating 30 yrs ago.  she is not an avid fan but will sit and watch the big games.  i will say she is a much more interested michigan hoops fan, men or women, which is good.

all of our children a huge michigan fans.  at least in this instance, the apples didn't fall far from the tree.

My wife has zero interest in sports and knows almost nothing football. I also work swing shift hours and currently work on Fridays and Saturdays, so I don’t get to sleep until around 4am those nights. That means I have to record early games and start watching when I wake up, which is usually about an hour after kickoff. I zip through between plays and commercials until I catch up to the live broadcast around halftime. Once the game ends, it’s shower time and then off to work again. In other words, I usually spend the entire time we have together on Saturdays watching football. She never complains and just sits right next to me, happy that I’m enjoying myself. I’m thinking about dropping the few thousand dollars it would take to go to the Ohio St. game next year and if I do, she’ll be right there with me. She’s the best.

My wife is phenomenal. Very little interest in sport but understands my love for Michigan. She hopes they win and enjoys watching big games with me. We'll be married 7 years on 11/6 and we started dating right before the Capital One Bowl in 08 against Florida. Her first introduction to Michigan was the darkest of days with RR, so she's been enjoying Michigan's latest successes, albeit marginally. :)

She's the best.

my wife and i have been together for 26 years, and married for 24.

it took a long time, but she has been fully converted from "sportsball is stupid" to "what time is the game on so I know when to start making drinks and ordering wings." i think she yells at the TV more than I do. She watches college football (even the non-M games), NFL games, NHL and college hockey games.

she still hates baseball ("too slow and boring") and basketball (she hates the constant squeaking of the shoes).

I laughed at your shoe comment. My wife refers to basketball as “squeaks.” Both my current wife and my ex-wife are Michigan alums. I do not think I could tolerate anything else. My wife will watch games with me when she can but she usually spends that time entertaining my children so I can watch, alone. Could not ask for a better partner.

Eh my wife is a Pac-12 grad who hates college football and considers it a corruption of the values of higher education, mildly resents the fact I follow it, gets angry if any planned activity is in any way disrupted by football, and makes mocking comments almost every time she happens to catch a bit of a game.

The problem is that I can't really mount a cohesive, intellectually honest defense of it because quite frankly most of her views on CFB are entirely justified. My only defense is "well you love makeup even though it's superficial and based on beauty standards imposed by the patriarchy". It sort of works to keep the opposition at bay, but she's smart enough to know 'tu quoque' is rather specious and doesn't actually work to justify behavior.

my partner gets me and gets my fandom.  she went to western, but her father, brother, and sister all graduated from michigan, as did her son, so she's an all-in fan.

she also gets football and even listens when i go on and on about when we pull the center around the end or when j.j. fires an out, on-time, to the other side of the field.  well, rather, she doesn't roll her eyes too hard, and that's enough for me...she sometimes even asks me to elaborate.

she even brings up the games and looks forward to watching them with me, as in "where are we watching the game on saturday?"

i'm the luckiest guy i know, for more reasons than i can say.  michigan fandom is probably the least important of the reasons.  but boy, the days i've spent with her in the stadium, watching her son march in the band?  those are truly some of the happiest days of my life.

My hotter half is a University of Arkansas grad and she wears Michigan attire on gameday.  Her Mother once said "Go Michigan" and Jessie corrected her that it's Go Blue.  Proud moment for me.

My first fiancee did not understand why I needed to park myself in front of a TV from noon to midnight with my football-watching crew pretty much every fall Saturday.  I told her since I don't care about pro football she can have me all of Sunday, but just give me 12-13 days a year to enjoy the sport I love the most by far.

My second fiancee *did* understand -- even though she personally doesn't (didn't?) like football.  Part of why she's my wife now.  Never made it to the wedding with the first fiancee.

My wife went to Michigan State, but she's supportive of me watching the games and loves Ann Arbor (she was born there too). There are times when I will sacrifice watching a game in lieu of family things. The Big Ten Championship last year was one of those times because that was our anniversary weekend and we were in Atlanta. I recorded the game digitally but we were able to watch the 4th quarter.

Since I've only seen the PSU game live this season... because the wife has made other plans every Saturday for us thus far, this coming Saturday is going to be man day in my house and I will be celebrating, among other things, by wearing my Polk High #33 football jersey!

My wife fully supports my habit.  We met while undergrads at Michigan.  She's as addicted to Michigan football as I am and she's the one that pushed me to buy season tickets back in the dark days of Rich Rod.

We are taking a long weekend trip to Montreal/Quebec City which she knew would need to be booked for the bye week.  She's a keeper.

I appreciate my former Sparty ex-wife. More so that she is not my current wife.

But my current girlfriend is also a Sparty. Some lessons you just never learn I guess. Although she is not my wife so maybe I learned something after all.

I appreciate that she changed her stance on sports. I remember very specifically her saying that she wouldn't marry anyone who was that into sports...well it looks like I won that battle as we got married on 10/1/22. She was even nice enough to be late for pictures so we could finish watching the Iowa game. Now she will sit down and watch Michigan, F1, and English Premier League with me on the weekends. If there is somewhere she wants to go for a weekend she always checks the schedule for a bye week.

Couldn’t ask for a better bye week! 10 yr anniversary tomorrow and my wife’s bday this coming Monday!

That being said, my wife loves football too. Has no problem watching games all Saturday. We’ll watch much more college than pro, but she is a Colts fan 🤦🏻‍♂️

My wife tries.. She was out and about Saturday during the 1st Qt. She keeps up with the score so she knows what approach to take once she returns home.. I got a text when Michigan was up 3-0.. " How does a team get 3 points".. Being a smart ass I said " 3 XP".. Then she said " XP , like what Alex ( 8 year old son) gets in fortnite.. Its a work in progress but she sure does look good rocking the Michigan gear ! .. We'll be soaking up what looks like nice weather in central Indiana at the kids soccer tournament!
