What did we learn from Draftageddon 2016?
I guess I am a sick puppy because I try to make sense out of Draftageddon. I do think there is some helpful insight as to which programs are likely to do better and who to look out for as dangermen throughout the season. With that, here we go:
Draft by School:
2016 | 2015 | |||
EAST TOTAL | 68 | EAST TOTAL | 72
OSU | 14 | OSU | 19 | |
MSU | 8 | MSU | 15 | |
Michigan | 23 | Michigan | 17
PSU | 9 | PSU | 10 | |
Indiana | 7 | Indiana | 2 | |
Rutgers | 3 | Rutgers | 4 | |
Maryland | 4 | Maryland | 5 | |
WEST TOTAL | 36 | WEST TOTAL | 32
Wisconsin | 7 | Wisconsin | 9
Illinois | 3 | Illinois | 4 | |
Minnesota | 4 | Minnesota | 4
Iowa | 10 | Iowa | 5 | |
Nebraska | 7 | Nebraska | 6 | |
Purdue | 1 | Purdue | 2 | |
Northwestern | 4 | Northwestern | 2 |
Results: Let's look to last year to see how accurate this way of looking at it is. OSU was by far the best team (other than that one game where they forgot how to coach) and that was supported by their number of draft picks. M and MSU were pretty even (except for that thing that didn't happen as far as I can recall). That was born out in the numbers also. PSU was the next toughest and that held true also. Over in the west, the crew pretty much missed on Iowa completely, but their numbers for Wisconsin & Nebraska probably accurately reflected the relative strength of those teams. Based on this Northwestern over performed.
So this year, yep, Michigan homerism certainly shows. But probably not as bad as last year as many of the players are now known entities. So, OSU will still be tough, but probably a shade less so than last year. MSU takes a pretty big dip. PSU & Indiana will be middle of the pack upset specialists (both ways). It looks like the crew came around on Iowa with little to no change for everyone else, except maybe Northwestern continues on last years good year.
But who really has the good talent? Last year I also looked at who had the most picks in the first 10 rounds to see if the talent was concentrated in a few schools. Here's what it looks like:
Draft picks in the first 10 rounds:
2016 | 2015 | |||
EAST TOTALS | 27 | EAST TOTALS | 33
OSU | 6 | OSU | 14 | |
MSU | 1 | MSU | 4 | |
Michigan | 12 | Michigan | 4 | |
PSU | 3 | PSU | 6 | |
Indiana | 3 | Indiana | 1 | |
Rutgers | 1 | Rutgers | 3 | |
Marlyand | 1 | Maryland | 1 | |
WEST TOTALS | 13 | WEST TOTALS | 7
Wisconsin | 2 | Wisconsin | 3
Illinois | 1 | Illinois | 0 | |
Minnesota | 1 | Minnesota | 1
Iowa | 4 | Iowa | 1 | |
Nebraska | 1 | Nebraska | 2 | |
Purdue | 1 | Purdue | 0 | |
Northwestern | 3 | Northwestern | 0 |
Results: So, yeah, homerism be damned, no one is even close to Michigan in elite talent this year. A significant reduction for OSU from last year. Last year, the MGoCrew thought MSU had a lot of talent but not much of it was elite. In fact, they thought Michigan and MSU were equal in elite talent. That was probably spot on. Indiana may finally win one of those games they are not supposed to because they have a couple high end talents this year. Other than Iowa (and NW) the west looks pretty pedestrian. Althought the split between East and West appears to be a little more narrow this year. How the heck did PSU finish...oh yeah, Franklin. 2016, even less talent and more Franklin!!! I don't think that ends well.
Now the most helpful thing I looked at last year. Based on the draft, what does the first team and second team all B1G look like. To make this suffering come to an end, I will not post last years teams, but trust me, last year was pretty spot on minus a few unforseed out of nowhere type players.
Your 2016 First & Second Team ALL-B1G based on Draftageddon:
2016 First Team | 2016 Second Team
QB | JT Barrett | OSU | QB | CJ Beathard | IA
RB | Saquan Barkley | PSU | RB | Justin Jackson | NW
RB | Corey Clement | UW | RB | LJ Scott | MSU
WR | Jehu Chesson | UM | WR | Chris Godwin | PSU
WR | Jordan Westercamp | NE | WR | Amara Darboh | UM
TE | Jake Butt | UM | TE | George Kittle | IA
OT | Cole Croston | IA | OT | Michael Dunn | MD
OT | Nick Gates | NE | OT (QB) | Erik Magnuson | UM
OG | Dan Freeney | IN | OG | Jacob Bailey | IN
OG | Sean Welsh | IA | OG | Billy Price | OSU
C | Pat Elfein | OSU | C | Mason Cole | UM
DE | Dwauane Smoot | IL | DE | Sam Hubbard | OSU
DE | Taco Charlton | UM | DE | Tyquan Lewis | OSU
DT | Malik McDowell | MSU | DT | Ryan Glasgow | UM
DT | Chris Wormley | UM | DT | Mo Hurst | UM
LB | Raekwon McMillian | OSU | LB | Josey Jewell | IA
LB | Nyeem Wartman-White | PSU | LB | Riley Bullough | MSU
LB(HSP) | Jabrill Peppers | UM | LB(HSP) | Anthony Walker | NW
CB | Jourdan Lewis | UM | CB | Gareon Conley | OSU
CB | Desmond King | IA | CB | Will Likely | MD
S | Godwin Iguebuke | NW | S | Marcus Allen (NTMA) | PSU
S | Nate Gerry | NE | S | Dymonte Thomas | UM
P | Kenny Allen | UM | P | Ryan Santoso | MN
K | Griffen Oaks | IN | K | Drew Brown | NE |
Results: Well, you can see why the MGoCrew is so high on Michigan this year. Players sprinkled across the first and second team offense and defense (even special teams). You can also see why OSU is not going away. Their defense should keep them in games and JT Barrett with just enough of an O-line will still score some points. Iowa should be able to score some points, the defense is a little more of a question mark. No MSU to be found anywhere in the secondary and only a DT and one LB up front should make this D a little easier to gain yards on. Indiana has two O-lineman. Is Jordan Howard gone? Yes. Ok. Whew!
I hope this brings a little more insight into the glory that is Draftageddon 2016. Now, log your complaints to the owners and proprietors. I just drink here.

I learned it was possible to not care about a front page post.

if you have any as a result of a plea bargain, I'm just sayin'.
Seriously, thanks, found it useful. I'd upvote again if you were to add, say, position group rankings based on the draft?

Thanks. I think.
I'm sure very few people made it to the end, but the final post did have a chart of the draft by position group. Scanning through, it was pretty easy to see what teams had strength or weakness, so I didn't duplicate that here. I figured it bad form to copy and paste from a main page post in a board thread.

So good, in fact, that I found it the best Draftageddon-based entry. Seems like such a summary would be valuable Front-page stuff.

Please no.

That even when it comes to college football, and even when it is very beloved Michigan-based, I still do not care about other people's fantasy football teams.

I learned I not only am unable to read the full draftageddon posts, but I'm also unable to read a summary of the draftageddon posts.
Oh you meant about the Big Ten or our opponents? Notta whole lotta.

haha. Easily the worst feature on this website.

That I dislike board posts about Draftageddon as well as the front page Draftageddon posts.

While we're at it, I also think the name "draftageddon" is uninspired.
A few suggestions based on the PAIN inflicted to readers:
- Big Ten Draftastrophy
- MGoBlog Fantacide
- Rotisserie Footbullcrap
- Death by Boring Content
- Front Page MGoCompliant Thread
I will admit I get a lot of pleasure out of the comments sections, though. So good job to all the snarky and/or overreactive posters out there.

Death by Boring Content is my personal favorite - reminds me of the death by bunga bunga joke.
By the way, clicked on this thread purely for the snark value, and I must say that I am not disappointed.

False.
"Harbaugh uber allies" implies that he is axis, which can't be true.

Good stuff. Thanks.

this should be the entire front page series for Draftageddon. Hold the drafts, ets etc, just give me the results in this format the 1st week in Aug.

This is impressive.
