Week 1: Best thing you saw...

Submitted by mi93 on

While I watch a lot of games each week, I don't see it all and thought it'd be interesting to hear what was the one thing that you saw that reminded you that nothing beats college football.

Since it's first time effort I'll offer two:

1) Nebraska's missing man punt formation;

2) Texas players lifing Charlie Strong after beating ND in 2OT.

NOTE: This could be a fun weekly thing, but neg away if it's not an interesting item to post each week.  Have a great week all.

This weekend was phenomenal.  All the quality top 25 matchups made it feel like a bowl game weekend at the end of the season, not the typical "preseason" first week.

We'll join the party next year.

Best Game? Toss up between Wisky-LSU, UT-ND, and FSU-OM.
Best Team? Alabama and it's not even close. I think we are better than or can beat every team in the country except them.
Best Moment? Nebraska punter tribute. I got chills when I saw that.

about not being that far from Alabama, and I think we have the talent to compete with them, but maybe not the depth quite yet.  As well as our freshmen played, tAlabama has sophomores and juniors on their two and three deep.

When all is said and done, our team has had 2 years of Harbaugh and their guys have had 3-4 years of Saban.  4 years of Harbaugh and the margin will be non-existent.

We probably have a defense that can match up in the trenches. But our offense may have trouble against their defense. It depends on how well the OL progress this season. We definitely have our strengths on our offense, such as TE and WRs. But QB, RB and OL still need to develop more if we want to compete and beat AL, if we get to the playoffs.

USC looked good until the end of the first half when their defense got tired and the wheels came off.  Even if you have 10 Five Stars every year (cheating scholarship limits),  if you don't have depth you're going to lose.

Going into the season I thought the two unbeatable teams we would possibly face were Bama and Clemson. It was nice to see both struggle in their games...until Bama found their rhythm. They're probably going to be just as good as always come postseason. FSU looked crazy good once they scored that first TD. If they keep it up, look out.

It got overplayed a bit, but it was nice seeing seeing Travis Rudolph (FSU Receiver) sitting at the table with the autistic boy (named Bo!), especially seeing how much it meant to his mother.

I'm finding the SEC conference pride machine, headed up by Paul "I look like a little penis with glasses on" Finebaum, completely insufferable. Want to hype up Alabama? That's fine because it's obviously well deserved. But after one weekend you can color me unimpressed.

They were lucky to be 7-7. I'd expect almost every sec team outside of bama to drop after this week. Tennessee should drop out of the top 10 for struggling vs app state. Florida was unimpressive vs umass. Arkansas beat Louisiana tech by 1. Georgia ends up being their second most impressive win. I'm sure they will still find a way to put several sec teams in the top ten, but they really only deserve one.

I loved the story that played out on gameday and the day before. From the Q&A asking about Jordan's first college game, De'veon waking him up and getting him hyped, the picture of him looking in amazement at the Big House as he was walking in, and finally, the big performance that got everyone talking. The progression set him up as an excited, maybe nervous, freshman, and then he went out there and killed it. Can't help but be happy for him.

when he avoided a three-yard loss and turned it into a four or five yard gain.  Visions of Gordie Bell, Jamie Morris and Barry Sanders came to mind in seeing the display of outstanding athleticism by Mr. Evans on that play.

quite an opening weekend indeed.

bama looks like bama
osu looks like osu
msu lacks enthusiasm
fsu is dangerous
clemson is overrated
lsu is a bad team
wisky isn't that good

oh, this isn't a hottakes thread?

I'm going to provide my hot takes on your hot takes:

Bama is Bama. USC was out athleted but severely out coached.
OSU is OSU but BG is not BG of last year.
MSU definitely lacks enthusiasm but I just don't think their lines are half as good as they were last year. Their offense is significantly worse without Cook and Burbridge.
FSU will beat Clemson and make the playoffs behind another freshman QB.
Clemson is underwhelming but they played at Auburn and that's not easy.
LSU is not a bad team. Coaching incredibly handcuffs them. With Harbaugh at the helm LSU beats Wisconsin by 3 scores.
Wisconsin is surprisingly good. They aren't world beaters but I expect them to be a top 25 team thought the course of the season.

My fresh hot takes:
OU - Big Game Bob strikes again and I expect them to finish the season 9-3
Texas - after 2 underwhelming seasons they will go 9-3 and share the Big12 title with Oklahoma and Baylor
Houston makes the playoffs. The only way they lose is if Ward Jr. gets injured or Louisville plays out of their ass.
Irish - they will go 10-2 and blow out MSU with Kizer playing the entire game.

My updated college football playoff:
1. Alabama
2. Florida state
3. Michigan
4. Houston

Trying to stay off the hype train but Evans was great. Seems like other teams consistently burn Michigan with players like Evans, and I am hoping Michigan finally has a player that can really create matchup nightmares. Who was the last running back like Evans? Wheatly? Tony Boles? Maybe you could say Denard if he played running back full time. Michigan needs to have some players with game breaking speed like Evans if they are going to take the next step and play with the big boys.

Maybe this week to rest him, but there's no way an established senior starter gets dropped behind a freshman based on one game, no matter how impressive. Let's see how Evans handles the tougher, bigger defenses we'll face before we promote him to starter.

WI win was amazing, but what that LSU OL did to the DB that sealed the win should have criminal. Great job Les Miles giving a one game suspension. #Suspect, #nocharacter, #classless I'm still pissed.

1. Sam Foltz tribute

2. James Conner playing scoring for Pitt

3. Michigan's OL and D in a win vs. Hawaii (place the Houston return here if you don't want me to e a homer)

4. The Texas/ND game - especially Texas' offense with a true freshman QB and the 18-wheeler package

5. The SEC struggles

I Want To Believe

1) Nebraska's 10 man punt formation to honor their fallen punter was amazing. I was immediately reminded of when the late Sean Taylor was murdered. The redskins played the first defensive series of the next game with 10 men to honor him. I'll admit, in both instances I shed a few tears.

2) Michigan freshman class. I have followed Michigan recruiting religiously since roughly 2004. I can tell you without hesitation that the 2016 freshman class is the most physically gifted / imposing freshman class I have ever seen at Michigan. Yes, we did play Hawaii. But it was easy to see the skill that several freshmen put on display. Eddie McDoom is going to be an absolute stud. His first catch showed off strong hands, good route running, great awareness, and the huge upside that exists in his game.
Chris Evans looks like a kid that could end up being one of the largest diamonds in the rough ever found. Admittedly, I didn't expect much at all from Evans this year. I can tell you right now that Evans is the real deal. The last subtle cut he made on his first TD run was beyond his years, which to me implies elite instincts. Mike Hart had elite instinct, which made him one of the best vision / cut back RB's ever. Evans appears to have that same ability but also has breakaway speed and receiving ability. Can't wait to see how his deployment within our offense develops as the year progresses. I thought Rashan Gary played well for his first college game and definitely played a role in the Stribling pick six via his QB pressure. I liked his energy and his speed chasing Stribling to the end zone was insane. Gary is going to be very solid by the end of the year.
To me, those were the 3 that really stood out, but I was most taken back by the speed / athleticism of Devin Asasi considering how enormous he is. The freshman class is for real, and by the time the last ones graduate it will go down as one of the best classes in Michigan history.

3) Tom Hermann at Houston is one of the best 6 coaches in the country in my opinion. I really hope he never ends up at osu or any other big ten school. That guy scares me more than Meyer.

Rashan Gary looked like the real deal to my eyes. i know Evans is getting the hype, but Gary was consistently manhandling the lineman put in front of him. This bodes well, especially with injuries to the line. I also thought Dexter Lawrence from Clemson looked a little better in his debut, if I'm being honest. One game but that guy is going to be an issue for teams.

Among non-Michigan things here:

For sheer entertainment value, I would actually have to say last night's FSU-Ole Miss game, and I say that because watching Florida State suddenly find a groove and basically bowl over Ole Miss from the end of the second quarter onwards.

For emotional boost, the end of the Texas-ND game - seeing Notre Dame lose has somehow always been satisfying and helpful for my general mood going into the next week.

The DLine functioning as a unit to stop the run. They were like a moving wall forcing the RBs to bounce to the outside where the linebackers took them out. A few holes appeared here and there, but overall, an oppressive defensive front.

If we  had Ruddock for another year, I'd be way too optimistic. Speight is looking good however and he did look particularly good on the medium range throws. I hope this is the start of another long run of great UM passing QBs. As much as I truly loved watching Denard Robinson run (he is the best UM player I've seen play in person) a 2500 yard passing season would be terrific.
