W-L Record with John O'Neill as Referee

Submitted by UPMichigan on

I'm not saying this was where I pointed the finger after this loss, but in all honesty what is our all-time W-L record when he is the official? Only person I can think of that would likely know this is WD.

In 2017 we are 0-1

In 2016 we were 1-1 (UCF, Iowa)

In 2015 we were 1-1 (MSU, Oregon St.)

In 2014 we were 1-2 (OSU, IU, ND)

In 2013 we were 0-1 (Nebraska)

In 2012 we were 1-1 (Illinois, OSU)

In 2011 we were 1-0 (Illinois)

So in the past 7 years we are 5-7 with him as the head official.

**edit - I added the results from other officials upon request. It was also interesting to see how favorable we are with some other officials**

Here's results of other officials who did a minumum of 2 games from 2011-present

Jerry McGinn we are 5-2

Mike Cannon we are 7-1 (sole loss was 42-41 vs OSU)

Dan Capron we are 3-4

Ron Snodgrass we are 5-0

Don Willare we are 3-0

Mike Conlin we are 2-0

Todd Geerlings we are 2-3

Dave Witvoet we are 4-0

Alex Kemp we are 4-0

Bill LeMonnier we are 2-4

Dennis Lipski we are 3-0

Again, I'm not sayin John is the reason we lost. Just started to feel like a coincidence, so I figured I'd look.

I saw his name on the screen when he was announcing a call early in the game, my stomach turned. I did not have the stats the OP presented, but I damn sure had enough anecdotal knowledge of his name/history/reputation to get a sense that we were in trouble.Regardless the true impact, those numbers bear a rather unfortunate correlation

If we had lost all of the games that O'Neill officiated, or all of them besides Rutgers, you might have the torch and pitchfork people getting out their tikis and polishing their tines but

*Your afterbrain is the part of you that says oh wait right after you post something.

Meh, reffing is low on the list of reasons we lost on Saturday. I'd say lady luck is #1 in my book. MSU recovered both our fumbles. Lewerke recovers a fumbled snap and lands on his lineman and rolls for a first down. How on earth did they recover that muffed punt? The returner was running full speed and got shoved right before he fielded the ball and it bounced right into his chest. That was one of the most pivotal plays of the game. At worst, we get the ball inside the 10. At best, it's a touchdown for us. But alas, it wasn't meant to be.

was fine so we forgot about the first.  But it felt like they got extensions on 3-4 3rd down plays where they were given a first via penalty or where they wouldn't call holding on their tackle.  We had a touchdown called back and never had a drive extended via penalty as far as I can remember.  I was at the game though and I have a slight bias towards Michigan, so that might affect my memory...

Agree with comments above that the refs certainly did not cost us this game.  But is someone able to explain what happened I believe just before O'Korn's 2nd interception?  There were two penalties on the play as we were just short of midfield.  As I recall a holding against Michigan and something in the defensive secondary against MSU.  Yet, the penalties did not offset and we ended up with a 1st & 20.  O'Korn threw an interception I believe 2 plays later on something like 2nd & 13.

I was watching the game in a bar so couldn't hear enough to get an explanation but the way the penalties were assessed put us behind the chains and into an obvious passing situation during the storm.

So...you are not even going to attempt to compare this record to games when this dude was not the ref? Embarassing thread for the fanbase.

edit: The OP updated his/her post with a comparison (without noting that he/she did so).

we lost Saturday, John O'Neill is nowhere to be found. We weren't the better team in this particular day. They were. (edit: ON this particular day. And until Harbaugh and his offensive staff figure out how to fix the entire offense from the OL outward, we're going to be at a disadvantage there most of the rest of the season.)

Saw the game in person and didn't have the heart to rewatch later, wtf happened on the Grant Perry td that got overturned? It looked like he was in the endzone easily, what was the reasoning for putting him at the one?

Just for comparison the overall record during this span is 55 - 25. Under Harbaugh is 24-7. With this guy as the official we are 2-3. So of our losses he has officiated in almost half them under Jim.

There were a few game effecting calls.

Missed P.I and Missed Roughing The Passer.

But this was a clear game of who had the lead before the storm hit. We didn't finish on the few drives we had pre-storm and then once the rain. I think once the rain came Michigan felt it had to push everytime to score and it made errors it didn't need to do. Michigan State was content to secure the ball and play defense.

It was me. Saturday was my fault. See I always get a beer made closer to Ann Arbor than to our opponent. It's not superstition - it's real. Well most weeks it's pretty easy just to grab a Michigan beer. Lately I've been obsessed with Super Trooper by Petoskey Brewing. (everyone should try this beer) I totally forgot about MSU week beer rule - Arbor Brewing or Atwater. Ann Arbor to Petoskey Brewing is 255 miles. East Lansing to Petoskey Brewing 212 miles! Damn it! I'm sorry.
