TTB: Scouting the 2018 Quarterbacks

Submitted by Magnus on

For those who are interested, I took an in-depth look at the eleven quarterbacks Michigan has offered so far in the class of 2018. Michigan isn't heavily pursuing all of them anymore, and several are already committed elsewhere. I didn't think the 2017 class was very strong at the quarterback position overall, but 2018 looks to have more elite talent.

Well, the coaching staff has been working on Matt Corral, but he's committed to USC and pretty solid. I don't know if Michigan could flip Sitkowski or not. He's a New Jersey native (before transferring to IMG), but the coaches backed off on him and he committed to Miami; I'm guessing that ship has sailed.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson is my first choice of guys we have a shot at, but it seems more and more likely that he's going to UCLA.

Yes, "we" as in Michigan. In case you're trying to climb up on your high horse, let me remind you of your past comments:

"That game was the worst I've seen Michigan as a team play in over a month. Just sucks we dropped it at a sweet sixteen game. And we still could have won. Fun season which we overachieved so it's hard to be too mad. I am dealing with it better than I thought I would."

"We made the elite 8 in 2014."

"I sure hope we win."

17 touchdowns responsible for on 75 touches is pretty crazy, regardless of how lopsided the talent differential is. Interested to see how that holds up in a larger sample size, and how much his accuracy/timing improves with full time work (he'll almost definitely be committed by then, but still).

I won't be surprised if they end up with a sleeper-type guy. Being coached by Harbaugh/Pep is huge but it's damned hard to bring in top QB talent 3 years in a row.

I'm taking a wild guess here & I'll assume that part of the tough part of recruiting a blue chip QB at this point is they're looking at the depth chart.  Speight with possibly 2017 & 2018.  Then Peters and/or McCaffrey clogging up the line at least out to 2019 and 2020 possibly 2021.  Other positions like D-Line or RBs (depending on the system), or LBs it's not as much of an issue because there's more spots on the field & a rotation.

But incoming QBs for the 2018 class know there's a good chance they'll sit for at least 2 if not 3-4 years.

I know it's a "high class problem to have"--makes me wonder how some of the blue chip programs land 5 star QBs seemingly once per year.  At some point you run into the playing time problem.

Would love to know what the top coaches say to these kids to get them to come despite the depth chart.  Just point to player development/NFL track record and play to their ego?  Recruit kids cocky enough so they just assume they'll beat out the other 2-4 stud QBs on the team & then if/when they discover they didn't by their 2nd or 3rd year, just tough luck for the kid?

any film on DTR and I have to admit, I was not overly impressed. As you point out some could just be because of lack of reps, but think he would need a lot of work before he would be ready for the college game.

He reminds me of an athlete playing QB, rather then a QB that is athletic. He appears to have really good receivers who helped him out a lot on throws. Lots of mechanic work needs to be improved and timing definitely.

That's one reason why I like posting these types of articles, because I think it encourages people to actually watch the film. I think there are a lot of people who want whomever the recruiting services, bloggers, etc. want, but like you, they don't have the time or inclination to watch every recruiting film out of context. This gives people some context.

I had figured since he was a 4* and some big name schools were all over him that he would look great on film, but just wasn't that impressed.  Always enjoy watching some film though and getting a feeling for some of these kids

Pure athlete that might develop into a QB, but if not can be switched into another position. Your selling that kind of kid on the program, player development and ability to morph into a slot back to have a shot at the NFL. Harbaugh creates optionality for the true dual-threat QB not physically big enough (i.e., not Cam Newton) to last in the NFL. I mean what does JT Barrett do when he is done at OSU? Braxton Miller was fortunate in a way to have messed up his throwing arm and get a shot at developing into a slot back. Braxton was at least drafted in the 3rd round but JT might go undrafted.

To answer this question, I generally have to go by whom Michigan was recruiting in those classes. I don't keep as close of an eye on QB classes altogether.

I would say this class is probably the best ouf of the 2015-2018 classes, or at least the guys we're recruiting are at a higher level. There have been a couple years overall where I've thought, "Really? This is all we have to choose from?" From the time period mentioned, here's how I would rank them:

1. 2018 (Lawrence, Corral, Thompson-Robinson, etc.)
2. 2016 (Peters, Haskins, Costello, etc.)
3. 2017 (McCaffrey, Hockman, Mills, Martell, etc.)
4. 2015 (Rosen, Gentry, Malzone, etc.)

That 2015 class was rough, by the way. I'm talking about guys we offered and who were getting attention. Kyle Kearns is struggling at Wake Forest, Brady White missed the 2016 season, Jimmy Fitzgerald transferred from Illinois to Dartmouth, Jack Beneventi decommitted from Iowa and ended up at Western Illinois, Alex Malzone can't get on the field, Zach Gentry is playing tight end, David Edwards is an offensive tackle, Sheriron Jones has played in just one game for Tennessee, David Sills played WR at WVU before transferring to JUCO and then returning to WVU as a WR, Riley Neal's the starter at Ball State, and Nick Johns transferred from Virginia to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

Out of that group, the guy who had the best year in 2016 was a guy who threw 13 TDs and 12 INTs as Ball State's starter (Riley Neal).

Saw a nice clip of him running about 75 yards for a TD.  Was surprised he had that agility/speed for being as big as he is.

He did commit to MSU well after the season ended and after all the recent issues came to light.  He's likely firm if he felt comfortable commiting at that time.

Magnus

Yeah, he's got some decent straight-line speed.

We'll see about the firmness of his commitment. I mean, I'm not questioning it, but more and more has been coming out about the suspensions and such.

It basically just means that he has a strong arm. Trent Dilfer calls it "arm talent." To me, it also means that he has good arm strength without needing to fully step into the throw or get his body going in the direction of the ball.

agreed, live arms can fling it without fully stepping into throws or off balance, etc - i think philip rivers has been a good example, that dude can throw a football.  hes not always the most accurate and there are QBs with stronger or better arms (ie aaron rodgers - prob the most overall arm talent right now) but rivers can lace it from any angle and its usually snapping

I don't know if DTR is the one or if Dylan, coming from that family may add a number of different layers to his overall athleticism a year, possibly two  removed from high school, specifically speed,  because this is the one area I've seen a large number of high school athletes improve greatly in, due to nothing more than the large disparity between the ages of so many of them, some of them graduating without yet turning 18 and many others turning 18 about a week after their senior year starts.

Leave it to the Damn Trojans to pull in yet another. I don't know what the experience factor looks like at USC, but as usual, I am sure they'll have a roster filled with superior ball players I do know, with the exception of Watson, there was not another qb I would have rather had last season than Darnold  Fast forward two seasons and Watson would have come up second. This young man appears to be about the most natural I've seen play the position in years. His mastery of the pocket, alone, is worth the pride of admission. He appears to be playing with twice the legal amount of sedatives allowed. The young man simply doesn't get shook and where most others woud have bailed about .3 earlier, he'll hang in, make the pass , usually with positive results and the only question I have concerning him is why Helton didn't want to win the NC earlier

That last statement is purely in jest, of course, but obviously he is the type of player opposite of most, as described in his pocket mastery above. And where with most you wonder if they'll be able to show the same sense of calm once the statdium is filled with over 100k With him, you instead wonder just how in the hell he can remain that calm.

This has noting to do with 2018 qb and i'll take all and any negs you want to hit me with, but damnit, the next time we discuss RBs, and I see another Barry Sanders, i'll do the same damn thing. He is the first collegiate athlete I've seen since Winfield that I've seem enough game action and tape to know he could have made it in two sports. I'll just have to take the word of the experts on the w. coast and guess that he probably had a future in baseballl as well.

Don't know what their D looks like this year Have them marked for a Final Four team this season, barring unspeakable injuries.

Michigan just offered '18 QB Michael Barrett from GA. He's only 5'11 205, and Michigan seems to be one of his only power 5 offers. Could tell you how they feel about DTR and Milton. He is a dual threat QB as well.

The thing with quarterbacks is that they usually commit to a place and then stick with it because they're seen to be the leaders of that particular recruiting class. So if DTR is going to commit sometime in the next month or two, he's probably likely to stick with that school; if it's UCLA and Mora gets fired, then a decent hire would probably keep him around. If he were waiting until January or February to decide, then a bad season for UCLA might push him in Michigan's direction.
