Thoughts on Fields from OSU insider

I have had a long history in the past of providing inside info to the board, some bits were popular, some were not, but I’ve always delivered the goods. My initial takes on Justin Fields were not received particularly well by the board and some mods, nonetheless it has recently finally been echoed by Ryan in his last two pressers.

I’ll paraphrase my spring thoughts on Fields and then go into my post-fall camp thoughts.

-In the spring when he transferred here I (and many people close to, on the team and coaching with the team) were very concerned at the unrealistic and insane hype surrounding Fields. Yes, he is a top ten all time QB coming out of HS. But he is also VERY raw and inexperienced with the weight of the world on his shoulders. He came into the spring not knowing the offense. He was slightly outplayed by Baldwin, it was not that he was terrible, Baldwin was just way better than anyone realized, still the staff thought Fields would pull ahead at the end of fall camp due to his upside and getting comfortable with the offense. But during the spring, if we had to win now in the big house, Baldwin would have gotten the nod. I think Baldwin transferred because he was frustrated, he felt like he was outplaying Fields and still wasn’t getting enough 1st team reps. He felt like the writing was on the wall and that he (no matter how well he played) would not start because of how ridiculous Fields upside is, even if his production wasn’t matching Baldwin’s yet.

Baldwin’s decision: Both QB’s were told at the end of the spring that a decision had not been made and that they would both battle for the starting spot during fall camp. Baldwin at this point felt disrespected and undervalued by the media and fans as he was outplaying Fields and receiving little to no respect. He also felt like the coaches wanted Fields to take the reigns and be the guy MORE than they wanted the best man to win. He felt like even if he was named the starter he’d never be secure here. When he told the staff he was going to compliance to put his name in the portal it shocked the hell out of everyone and the staff was mortified. At this point Fields didn’t know the offense (don’t give a damn what was said or reported, he was a chicken running around with his head cut off) and Chug loved the frat parties more than football. The most game ready QB was off of the roster and everyone and I mean EVERYONE was freaked out. Then we got Hoak and that added security but a backup at Kentucky who didn’t have a single rep here heading into fall camp was never going to start here.

Fall camp: Fields was terrible in his first week. Awful. Lots of turnovers, not setting the proper protections and checking into the wrong plays based on the looks. There was a silent panick and it was very real. Going into week 2 Mike, Day and Dennis calmed him down, told him not every play has to be a touchdown, told him to forget about hype, accolades or media expectations and to JUST THINK ABOUT THE NEXT PLAY. He really became a student of the game and made mistakes but much less than week one. By week three he was a different player. He was calm, setting the right protections, making some more of the right reads and making plays. By the very end of camp he started to look like the starter we need.

Expectations: Guys, calm down. Remember that this kid has never taken a meaningful snap. Remember that he’s a wide eyed (basically) freshmen that has immeasurable pressure on him. He is not Dwayne yet. He is going to turn the ball over, make the wrong reads at times and have his head-scratching moments. He is also going to make someone miss and go 70 yards to the house at some point. He could very well throw a pick six on the next play. Bottom line, he will be what buckeye nation wants him to be someday, but right now he’s a work in progress.

Projected stats through 12 game reg season: 24 passing touchdowns, 2650 passing yards, 11 interceptions. Completing 61 percent of his passes. 9 rushing touchdowns, 780 rushing yards 6 fumbles, 4 fumbles lost.

Last time OSU had “wide eyed” quarterbacks playing against Michigan, they dominated.

Braxton Miller did work on Michigan in 2011. That game was a W but was not a walk in the park at all. It literally came down to the last possession... and they were a 6-6 outfit that year.

And yeah Haskins still gives me nightmares from 2017. That Metellus drop sigh...

some of those snaps were designed qb runs or quick pass or run options, they did not have a true game plan, for him, they were just using fields to say hey you got on the field, he is raw and needs to develop accuracy, I'm sure Day will dial up plays to cater to his legs, so i imagine heavy option, rpo, and getting guys open in space

It kind of felt like he was building a movie narrative. Exaggerating how badly he looked at first and how through training camp and the coaching acumen of the great Ryan Day, Fields has risen up and become the QB OSU needs.

The only thing missing from the comment was a training montage.

Haskins played his first game in the big house and looked quite fine. Then last year before the season, people talked about how Shea’s experience would be the tipping point against OSU since Haskins hadn’t been a starter. Needless to say it didn’t work out that way last November. Bottom line is, they are merely 2 pieces of the puzzle! If our defense can’t come up with a better game plan than last year it will not matter how much better or more experience Shea has over Fields.

In November, I predict Fields will have 332 yards of total offense, complete 14-of-26 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns and make most of his big plays on the ground, rushing for 96 yards and a score on 17 carries.  A pretty good individual performance for a QB.

Also Braxton Miller’s stats when we won at home in 2011.

I thought things were in our favor in 2001, 2004, 2006, 2012, 2016, and 2018 as well.  Despite what seems like a coin flip game and it being played in AA I think OSU has earned the right to assume it can handle things until proven otherwise.

I'm sorry, did I miss something?  Is this last year or the year before?  Why concede to the team down south?

Past experience.  They've proven they can beat us with a new HC.  They've proven they can beat us with an inexperienced QB.  They've proven that they can beat us with significant injuries.  And, they've proven that they can beat us on the road.  The only thing they've haven't really been able to overcome in recent history is the Tatgate and an interim HC.

I'm not sure what it will take to get over the hump.  We do have continuity with JH in year 5 now.  We should have depth now, although there are still some concerns at DT & CB.  We do have a proven QB and o-line now.  We should finally be getting a more modern offense now.  And, we do have the game at home for once when it's expected to be close.  But, there were reasons before to think we could win and we didn't, so I still give them the edge until proven otherwise.

Im glad some of the fans on this site aren't wearing winged helmets. There must be a sale on wet blankets. Best talent in years, best coaching since Carr, Best Ol in more than a decade, One of the best DCs in college ball, good QB and rich in WRs.  and you doubt this team before the season begins.

No shit, we're fans.  I played college ball.  I can tell you from experience being a player and a fan are completely different.  In some ways it's easier to lose as a player because as a fan you can't do anything.

Best talent in years

We've had talent.  Are we any more talented than last year?

best coaching since Carr

Our staff was pretty good in 2016.  Gattis while promising is unproven as a coordinator.

Best Ol in more than a decade

Interior...I'd agree.  But, we don't have a Lewan, Long, etc. tackle and that has been our problem.  OSU's DEs beat us last year and it's the same matchup this year so they'll still have that advantage.

One of the best DCs in college ball

True, but Day put up 62 on Brown last year.  Brown has a lot to prove against OSU in 2019.

good QB and rich in WRs

Same ones as last year.

and you doubt this team before the season begins.

There's a difference between doubting a team and thinking it's a coin flip game with OSU having the edge.

So you think the coaching staff was pretty good in 2016?  I suggest the QB transfer made the OC look pretty good. And as far and coaching and talent go, look what Warinner did in one year. Don't you think that coaching with more time on task will bring them to a higher level?

And your comparing a known quantity in past O lineman with guys being developed.

Day didn't put up 62 on Brown. The poor offensive scheme shares those 62 points. You say you played college ball good for you but the statement that Brown gave up 62 is nuts.  Drive after drive stalls, balls are dropped, and turnovers factor into the time and situations the D has to defend. Is the pick 6 and extra point on DB?

The team shares that 62. The offense, the defense and the special teams.

So you think the coaching staff was pretty good in 2016?

Yes, I think Warriner is better than Drevno, but Wheatley, Greg Jackson, John Baxter, and Jedd Fisch were probably more proven their their successors.

And your comparing a known quantity in past O lineman with guys being developed.

I am comparing OSU's DEs to our OTs.  Chase Young & Tyreke Smith gave Runyan & Steuber trouble last year.  Why do you think it will be different this year?

The team shares that 62. The offense, the defense and the special teams.

OK, so if you look at it objectively what gives you reason to believe UM will win in 2019?  Are you simply projecting an o-line improvement and Gattis revolutionizing the offense?  If you're projecting wouldn't it be reasonable to expect OSU to improve in areas as well?

I researched the biggest question on the OSU offense   Heres some of my reading on the OL. https://www.landgrantholyland.com/2019/8/11/20800502/ohio-state-offensive-line-rebuilt-2019-starting-lineup

Last year, the OSU offense ranked seventh in the B1G in rushing offense, with 171.29 yards on the ground per game, the first time since 2011 that they hadn’t finished first or second in the conference’s rushing. Four starters are gone. They have a mixture of experience and youth. I realize they are loaded with talent. However, last years performance in the run game doesn't bode well for coaching. They had the goods but something fell short. This year is a new mix of guys.

Warinner is well ahead with a more experienced line, I believe is equally talented. I don't see a first year blend of guys molding into the unit they have had in the recent past.

Thayer Munford is 19 years old, but he’s now the only returning starter on OL. He's very good granted.

They have a 5th year senior Bowen RT, challenged by a talented red shirt freshman Petit-Frere.

Branden Bowen  has been out since the 6th game of 2017 with a knee injury.  Jackson is at left guard, and very good. Any injuries to this new unit will be costly to the season.

OC?  That's a coach.  I'd agree at QB and OL, but the 2016 group also had a better d-line with Charlton & Wormley and a better DB group with Peppers, Lewis, & Stribling.  Overall I'd say they are pretty similar, but with strengths and weaknesses in different areas.

Emotionally, if this does it for you, rock on. But it's pretty far from science. Every year brings a whole new set of variables, some of which look like they set up pretty nicely for us this year. A good deal will happen between now and (T)OSU, and that's what--year in and year out--makes that game so special.

With that said, God grants no special dispensation to OSU QBs, no matter how much of the Bpone koolaid you or anyone has drunk. So far, Fields is shaky, and they're sweating in Columbus; that's just great.
