Semi OT: Other teams fans on Mgoblog

Submitted by Double Nickel BG on
I saw this mentioned in a board entry earlier and was wondering how many other teams fans use mgoblog to get info on Michigan? I saw a Irish fan, I believe a Virginia fan, and maybe a Minnesota fan. I every once in awhile go to Bucknuts or some OSU site to stay informed on some OSU football matters. I think its great if other teams fans can come here and contribute to discussions without trolling, it brings a different prospective to the board. So how many different teams do we have on Mgoblog? Just looking for people to give a shoutout to their schools if they want.

Some of us have multiple degrees. MaizeandblueWahoo is a Virginia alum as well I think. MaizenblueDevil and I have Duke degrees. Other Chris is a big Virginia fan. Poguemahone is an OSU fan. Couple of Spartan fans here, DrWorm and SpartanDan. As for that random Irish guy out of nowhere, well, I have no idea why he's here talking about ND so much. I read BHGP pretty consistently, and BSD would be good if Mike wasn't a complete douche/retard towards Michigan.

Well I graduated from Grand Valley, but I'll admit that I didn't really follow the team this past season. Previous years I went to a few games and was fairly knowledgeable about the team.

He's contributing without annoying. I don't mind that at all. As far as other schools, I'm here representing my Central Michigan Chippewas! HAIL TO THE CHIPPEWAS!!! Though I'm a big Central fan, I'm still a Michigan fan first though.

I was born and raised a bigtime UM fan, in all sports. But, I went to college at Indiana University, so I guess you can put me in the category of 'fans of other teams' at mgo. The Wolverines will always be a passion for me and I still sit in the same seats I sat back in 1979 when I attended my first game.....coincidentally, the second game I ever attended was the famous Wangler to Carter play against the Hoosiers. Go Blue.....and Go Big Red. 9/26 will be a blast for me.

I have no idea what I'd do if UVA and Michigan ever played another football or basketball game. I purposely avoided Big Ten schools for that very reason. Penn State was the only other Big Ten school I applied to, and it was kind of a safety school and by the time I got my acceptance there, I'd already got my Michigan one so it was moot.

Honestly, I'm a bit dodgy on this issue. Football, I cheer for UM over IU Hoops, I stay nuetral. I cheer for the home team. Or, who needs the game most for Bubble implications. March, 2006, I was actively rooting for IU at Crisler Arena in that de facto play-in game to close the season. However, this season with how bad IU was, I was clearly pulling for UM in that game. Flame away, people, flame away.

My thought is that I'd end up rooting for whichever would benefit more from the win. Then I noticed the "who should we play to open the Big House next year" thread where UVA was suggested as an opponent and realized when both are 0-0, how are you supposed to figure that? I don't think I could really use the underdog rule. Say it was March Madness and one team was a #1 seed and the other was #8 or something. I think in that case it's gotta be the higher seed. It all depends on the situation, I guess.

Western for undergrad/CU for JD. Michigander for 30 years so I had to pick a side. Never saw the Buffs play in person. Never saw the Broncos sober. Seen UM in person about a million and a half times, give or take. So, I usually (curse you, MAC loving Bill Martin) can follow/root for them all without conflict.

what percentage of this blogs readers, and especially contributors, actually are alums. Not that I begrudge fans who didn't attend in any way at all, just out of interest. I assume that the % of non-alums/non-students would be much higher here than many other schools.

Seriously Dex? I thought it is only 38%. I have the Quadratic and Pythagorean theorem to back me on that one. Differential. Um...math.

IMO, you don't need to justify your right to root for UM. I have a buddy who is maybe the biggest M fan I know. He can rattle off the score of a random game in 1992. He actually graduated from USC. He didn't go to UM, has no family from Michigan, no friends (before he was a fan) who were M fans or alumni. Nonetheless, major big-time M fan. I love that shit. His reasoning? He grew up in Hawaii and when he was a kid M played UHawaii in Honalulu. He went to the game and loved the uni's. BOOM! Lifetime fan.

I probably played in the UM "band" at that game (1986, I think?). Seniors and top players raised some money to go represent M - they'd already contracted with a Honolulu high school band to play half-time, so we joined together. The H.S. kids had a lot of fun playing/marching with us. We had a great time playing for alumni on the beaches for beer and going snorkeling. Glad to hear some other good came of that trip. Me? UM alum, though it hardly matters to youse as I largely just lurk here during work.

EMU for UG Wayne State for G my Dad went to UM and I've been going to games since the late '80s. Who would want to be an Eastern fan anyways? I'm pumped about Ron English though, I hope he can bring them some success.

Michigan undergrad for Aerospace Eng., and then applied to grad school, but apparently smoking pot most of your freshman and sophomore year doesn't help the ol GPA too much. I had to settle on choosing between Purdue, Penn State and Illinois for grad school. Purdue was the best of the three in my field so I went there. I try and get to every PU/UM football game (AA or West Lafayette), but I have never cheered for Purdue in any contest. I grew up in a family full of Michigan fans, so I became one by default at a very young age.

Raised in Ann Arbor, attended all home games from 10-ish to 17, then attended Northwestern during the glorious Kustok/Basanez years. I cannot root AGAINST Michigan, and cheer madly for the Wildcats, but when the two meet I have to root for the team most in need of the win. That's not true. When they play my soul is in complete torment, and I just keep checking the scoreboard to make sure OSU is losing.

My dad went to Duke and I grew up on tobacco road. There was not a bigger Duke fan than me as a child. I also just finished my freshman year at UM. Cheering for Michigan against Duke was not hard at all although Scheyer's mother remembered me from my days at Cameron Indoor Stadium. I also grew up with Duke football. This past Michigan season was the most games I've seen the team I cheer for win.
