Semi OT: Other teams fans on Mgoblog
I saw this mentioned in a board entry earlier and was wondering how many other teams fans use mgoblog to get info on Michigan? I saw a Irish fan, I believe a Virginia fan, and maybe a Minnesota fan.
I every once in awhile go to Bucknuts or some OSU site to stay informed on some OSU football matters. I think its great if other teams fans can come here and contribute to discussions without trolling, it brings a different prospective to the board.
So how many different teams do we have on Mgoblog? Just looking for people to give a shoutout to their schools if they want.
Some of us have multiple degrees. MaizeandblueWahoo is a Virginia alum as well I think. MaizenblueDevil and I have Duke degrees. Other Chris is a big Virginia fan. Poguemahone is an OSU fan.
Couple of Spartan fans here, DrWorm and SpartanDan. As for that random Irish guy out of nowhere, well, I have no idea why he's here talking about ND so much.
I read BHGP pretty consistently, and BSD would be good if Mike wasn't a complete douche/retard towards Michigan.
I am a Virginia alum, but not actually a Michigan alum. Just the son of a Michigan alum father who raised me right. Also helped that I grew up in Michigan.
why? Followed the blog for a while and it seemed to have a knowledgeable college football community so I joined.
but there is more than just 1 ND fan on here. I am just obvious about it.
OSU, really?
I thought he was commuting from his parents basement to Oletangy Community College.
Of course, there's not much difference.
Well I graduated from Grand Valley, but I'll admit that I didn't really follow the team this past season. Previous years I went to a few games and was fairly knowledgeable about the team.
He's contributing without annoying. I don't mind that at all. As far as other schools, I'm here representing my Central Michigan Chippewas! HAIL TO THE CHIPPEWAS!!!
Though I'm a big Central fan, I'm still a Michigan fan first though.
I was born and raised a bigtime UM fan, in all sports.
But, I went to college at Indiana University, so I guess you can put me in the category of 'fans of other teams' at mgo.
The Wolverines will always be a passion for me and I still sit in the same seats I sat back in 1979 when I attended my first game.....coincidentally, the second game I ever attended was the famous Wangler to Carter play against the Hoosiers.
Go Blue.....and Go Big Red.
9/26 will be a blast for me.
I have no idea what I'd do if UVA and Michigan ever played another football or basketball game. I purposely avoided Big Ten schools for that very reason. Penn State was the only other Big Ten school I applied to, and it was kind of a safety school and by the time I got my acceptance there, I'd already got my Michigan one so it was moot.
Honestly, I'm a bit dodgy on this issue.
Football, I cheer for UM over IU
Hoops, I stay nuetral. I cheer for the home team. Or, who needs the game most for Bubble implications. March, 2006, I was actively rooting for IU at Crisler Arena in that de facto play-in game to close the season. However, this season with how bad IU was, I was clearly pulling for UM in that game.
Flame away, people, flame away.
Excellent use of the word "dodgy"
It's very easy -- you root for the team that is the underdog. That's what I did as I sat in the Big House, thinking I was going to see Virginia pull off the upset. But no matter how it turns out, you win, you know?
UVa '93
UM '95
My thought is that I'd end up rooting for whichever would benefit more from the win. Then I noticed the "who should we play to open the Big House next year" thread where UVA was suggested as an opponent and realized when both are 0-0, how are you supposed to figure that?
I don't think I could really use the underdog rule. Say it was March Madness and one team was a #1 seed and the other was #8 or something. I think in that case it's gotta be the higher seed. It all depends on the situation, I guess.
Western for undergrad/CU for JD. Michigander for 30 years so I had to pick a side.
Never saw the Buffs play in person. Never saw the Broncos sober. Seen UM in person about a million and a half times, give or take. So, I usually (curse you, MAC loving Bill Martin) can follow/root for them all without conflict.
what percentage of this blogs readers, and especially contributors, actually are alums. Not that I begrudge fans who didn't attend in any way at all, just out of interest. I assume that the % of non-alums/non-students would be much higher here than many other schools.
I'm a lum.
Seriously Dex? I thought it is only 38%. I have the Quadratic and Pythagorean theorem to back me on that one. Differential. Um...math.
but my dad and uncle are alums and my dad has season tickets. My brother is also currently attending Michigan so I think I have a right to root for them.
IMO, you don't need to justify your right to root for UM.
I have a buddy who is maybe the biggest M fan I know. He can rattle off the score of a random game in 1992. He actually graduated from USC. He didn't go to UM, has no family from Michigan, no friends (before he was a fan) who were M fans or alumni. Nonetheless, major big-time M fan. I love that shit.
His reasoning? He grew up in Hawaii and when he was a kid M played UHawaii in Honalulu. He went to the game and loved the uni's. BOOM! Lifetime fan.
I probably played in the UM "band" at that game (1986, I think?). Seniors and top players raised some money to go represent M - they'd already contracted with a Honolulu high school band to play half-time, so we joined together. The H.S. kids had a lot of fun playing/marching with us. We had a great time playing for alumni on the beaches for beer and going snorkeling. Glad to hear some other good came of that trip.
Me? UM alum, though it hardly matters to youse as I largely just lurk here during work.
but just in case, based on these replies, I'll say again that I don't care where anyone went, and everyone's welcome, it was just idle curiosity.
When Michigan plays Miami (not that Miami), I typically root for a decisive but not embarrassing Michigan win. Something along the lines of 31-17.
Penn State was the only other Big Ten school I applied to, and it was kind of a safety school and by the time I got my acceptance there, I'd already got my Michigan one so it was moot.
UM double Alum (UG, G)
EMU alum (G)
U. of Findlay alum, D II hoops champs this year! Native Toledoen raised right by my detroit native folks.
Grad at...sadly, ND. was employer paid for and was there over 2 summers, so was never there for any sports season.
That championship game was awesome.
One of the best, if not the best, endings of the season.
I am a current Michigan student and son of four Michigan degrees, so I have no wavering loyalties whatsoever.
Which of the two degrees were your biological parents? Some kind of swinger arrangement, if I had to guess.
I am the assbirth of Lucy Liu and Rich Eisen
EMU for UG
Wayne State for G
my Dad went to UM and I've been going to games since the late '80s. Who would want to be an Eastern fan anyways? I'm pumped about Ron English though, I hope he can bring them some success.
As a Ross B-school alum I am the arrogantiest of all michigan arrogance
I didn't go to college. Does that make me some sort of free agent?
We'll sign you for 10 MGoPoints.
Wait a second. What's the MGoSalaryCap?
No one is sure how the MGoSalaryCap works, but I think its decreasing next year. Whatever you do, don't suggest we use our MGoPoints to sign a hot young goaltender or else, BAH GAWD, some people will be very upset with you and threaten to put horse dicks on your face
I'd use mine to sign pic#16 from MGoGallery of womens hotness.
Foshizzle
Also, I didn't go to UM. Much smaller, much crappier school I'd rather not name. But yeah, lifelong M fan.
grew up in a2 and graduated from mich. there are no other schools.
EDIT: And want to still be living in a2 but that is currently proving difficult so for now it's the east coast..
Michigan undergrad for Aerospace Eng., and then applied to grad school, but apparently smoking pot most of your freshman and sophomore year doesn't help the ol GPA too much. I had to settle on choosing between Purdue, Penn State and Illinois for grad school. Purdue was the best of the three in my field so I went there. I try and get to every PU/UM football game (AA or West Lafayette), but I have never cheered for Purdue in any contest. I grew up in a family full of Michigan fans, so I became one by default at a very young age.
But not those assholes from East Lansing, the ones from Athens, Ohio!
....to quote the Good Ole Grateful Dead, "Never had such a good time in my life before"
Go Bobcats. Phil Steele picked them to win the MAC this season. OU vs UM, Motor City Bowl. Meet you at the MGM black jack table.
also picked UM to play Miami (that Miami) in the eh hem... Champs Sports Bowl.
I grew up a big virginia tech fan and i still am but michigan has way overtaken the hokies in the last 3 years. VT is my #2 school though
I grew up in Piscataway so I also cheer for the mighty scarlet knights of Rutgers
UG and G: Univ. of Sydney
Doctorate (current): UNSW
my old man is an M alum (med school), attended the whole 1991 michigan home games while i was there (the ND game is right up there as the most cherished experience in my life).
Sounds like a plan!
Edit: Thank you to Nebraska by the way for Frank Solich.
CMU. Lifelong fan. Brother graduated from M.
UG Div III
Trade School Michigan
Degree for the hell of it Div II
No cheering conflicts and some Saturdays I hit the trifecta.
Raised in Ann Arbor, attended all home games from 10-ish to 17, then attended Northwestern during the glorious Kustok/Basanez years. I cannot root AGAINST Michigan, and cheer madly for the Wildcats, but when the two meet I have to root for the team most in need of the win. That's not true. When they play my soul is in complete torment, and I just keep checking the scoreboard to make sure OSU is losing.
My dad went to Duke and I grew up on tobacco road. There was not a bigger Duke fan than me as a child. I also just finished my freshman year at UM. Cheering for Michigan against Duke was not hard at all although Scheyer's mother remembered me from my days at Cameron Indoor Stadium. I also grew up with Duke football. This past Michigan season was the most games I've seen the team I cheer for win.
I am blue through and thru. Thats all that matters to me. Oh and I'm a Michigan Student if you couldn't figure that one out
