Ronald Bellamy on the Drive with Jack Ebling in Lansing 92.1 (O'Korn related)

Submitted by Maizen on

Former Michigan WR Ronald Bellamy, now the head coach at West Bloomfield High School, was on Jack Ebling's radio show a few days ago to talk Michigan and MSU football. He said from his discussions with the Michigan coaches and the people in the program, John O'Korn "just lit up" the first team defense as the scout team QB everyday in practice. He said he was doing it against Lewis, Peppers, etc and the Michigan defensive coaches told him that O'Korn was going to be a flat out stud.

On something less positive for Michigan fans he said that MSU commit Trishton Jackson (West Bloomfield HS QB) was the best athlete in the state this year and is better than Corley.

Thought this bit of info might asuage some of the people who are worried about the QB situation next year. FWIW this also falls in line with something Sam Webb shared on his message board earlier this year. Sam said Roy Manning (now at Washington State) told him that several Washington State coaches coached against O'Korn at other schools and said he's going to be a 1st or 2nd draft pick.

Future is bright everyone.

Add to info pile suggesting O'Korn may have been the starter this year if eligible then? Good to hear. I just have supreme confidence that Harbaugh will wring every but if potential out of the QBs at this point. Now if that potential is high...well could be a special season in 2016.

MSU's WR class is going to be a pain in the butt for years to come. Corley will contribute immediately and has a high ceileing, Jackson looks like a huge sleeper, and Cam Chambers' film is quite impressive. I'd take any of those guys in a heartbeat.

And Corley may be the most likely. They have a really good WR class, but Corley can play both ways, as could a few others.

And I think the Jackson praise is legit. Really good athlete, and when I watched film of him playing WR he was surprisingly very natural as both a route runner and as a pass catcher. I would have been happy had Michigan landed any of their 4 WR commits, though I'm pretty happy with Michigan's WR class as well.

As far as O'Korn, it's going to really come down to decision making. He can make the throws, he's a decent athlete, but he has to be able to read defenses and make the right throws. That's the major concern with him.

I think the O'Korn part is credible, but, and I'm not just being a homer here, how much stock do we really put into a high school coach saying his own player is the best in the state? If the kid were on another team maybe, but his own?

If Trishton Jackson was worth a damn then Harbaugh would have offered. Harbaugh saw him up close at camp and passed. Sounds like Ron just hyping up his player.

This sounds like hyperbole.  I am sure O'Korn impressed on the Scout team, but what receivers was he throwing to that could have "lit up" Jourdan Lewis, for instance?

Unfortunately I have been following this stuff longer (and more closely) then I care to admit, so I don't have the benefit of being naive. How many times do you hear a player is unblockable, can't be covered etc, and then ... nothing. I always temper my enthusiasm when i hear those type of practice rumors. I think we all forget that Malzone was running away with the QB competition, until alas the spring game got in the way. If we believe the Bellamy report both in letter and spirit then you start to wonder how he could have ever gotten beat out by a freshman in Houston. If anyone is lighting up Lewis (the best cover corner in the game) regularly, then he has to be the best QB in college football.

But still a positive report.

And I don't think he would be lighting up Jourdan Lewis like a Christmas Tree. Lewis coverage is so good, he forces you to throw a perfect pass, and unless your Tom Brady with no pass rush, you ain't lighing him up.

Lighting up Lewis, with his coverage skills, is not realisitc for anyone. You can be an All American QB and still not have much success against him. So when I hear those type of practice rumors, they are probably hyperhole. Not to say he wasn't good or effective.

O'Korn has a significantly higher ceiling than Rudock. The big questions are about his decision-making--something we never had to worry about with Rudock. But with Harbaugh and Fisch, I'm feeling pretty good about where he'll end up.

Yes he most certainly was the #1 cause of that loss. 3 picks...one a pick 6. He overthrew numerous touchdowns. With average QB play we win that game. I'm not sure how one could argue the point.

He was great the last half of the year. I'm a fan...you can still be real about what occurred and not have revisionist history of "no worries". He had 3 TD's and 5 picks through the first 3 games. People had questions...

There is nothing wrong with pointing out the obvious when expressing opinions. Rudock had a day to forget on Utah, and he would probably tell you that himself. He finished his season admirable and should be proud of the season he had, but the Utah game was a dud. Three INTs (including a pick 6), missing two wide open WRs for touchdowns. You can cut him slack for the reasons you gave, but that still doesn't change the fact that it was a bad game for him.
