PSA-Get to know PUH-RA-MUS

Submitted by Gameboy on

As one of our most important high school pipelines, it might be worthwhile to learn a bit about Paramus, NJ.

Paramus NJ, is a favorite shopping spot for NY residents as there is no sales tax for clothing. The town is full of malls including one of the largest in NE. However, better shop on Fridays/Saturdays as the local Blue Law mandates that all malls close on Sundays (appreciated by locals as traffic is horrific outside of Sunday).

But most important of all... I beg you, ACE, to correct Brian's pronunciation of the town.

It is pronouced PUH-ra-mus, not para-mus. I beg you, please show some love to the town which has graced us with so much bounty.

Sincerely,

A Paramus High Graduate

Having grown up five minutes from Paramus I can confidently tell you there is nothing else there except shopping malls. There are like three or four of them right next to each other off a major highway that hooks up with New York City to try to lure in the weekend shopping traffic.

I think this is what he's saying. Regardless, good job on the phonetic spelling. You've indicated inflection/stress which is crucial and nobody else seems to grasp. puh-RAM-us or PAIR-uh-mus I believe it's the first one.

Puh-RAH-mus?  Ra, as in the sun god?

It's not clear in the OP whether "ra" is RAH or RAY (as in, ignoramus).

I, personally, was saying para-mus.  So correction is apparently necessary.

Sure, it could be puh-RAH-mus, though I've only heard it the two ways I listed.  Who knows?

But you saying "para-mus" doesn't help me, either. There's way too much room for me to guess at your pronunciation.  What is "para-"?  I assume you mean that like in "parachute" or "paramedic", but that's an assumption on my part.  You don't want me assuming.  You're trying to convey correct pronunciation.  You want to remove all doubt.

If you're trying to spell phonetically, "par" to me rhymes with car.  And if you know Spanish, that's how "para" is pronounced.  So I read "para" and I could think you're intending to rhyme with car:  "KAR-uh".  Maybe you were falling back on your Spanish.  Is that what you meant?   I have no idea.

If not, "PAIR-uh" is pretty hard for me to misinterpret.

Anyway, not picking on you.  I see these types of things all the time all over everywhere (often in media guides attempting to clarify player names).  People write it and read it in their head and it makes sense.  But others trying to determine pronunciation can interpret it a hundred different ways.  Maybe "para-" is like in "parade" in your head.  Did you mean "puh-RAY-mus"?  I doubt it.  Just pointing out the possibilities.

Wow.  How did I get here?  I don't know where I am.

That would still be different than the way I've been saying it, though.

I've spoken it as puh-RAM-us... but on reflection I suspect that you're probably right about the puh-RAH-mus.  It's a Catholic school, so the Latin for "we prepare" seems a reasonable assumption.

But then again, Americans mispronounce a wide variety of place-names, so who knows?

It's very grating to here Brian pronounce it wrong, but I think it's a reach to say it's a shopping destination for NYers. Was way more likely to head upstate to Woodberry Commons or out to LI for Roosevelt Field Mall.

Signed, a NYer

I first heard about Paramus while watching one of those professional bowling shows on early 50s television.  Seem to remember that "Wrong Foot" Lou Campi bowled out of Paramus.  He was a right-hander who delivered the ball after stopping on his right foot.

New Jerseyan here. You guys up in Bergen County realize the traffic is so bad outside of Sunday because everyone has to get all of their shit done on one weekend day (or in the few hours after work during the week), right?

The way you wrote "NE" made it seem like a reference to New England. If you had written "the NE" it would read as a reference to the Northeast. New Joisey is NOT part of New England, but is part of the Northeast.

Properly speaking, Jersey is part of France, although it isn't ruled by the Paris government.  It's a weird holdover from the days when the King of England was also a French nobleman (Duke of Normandy).   To this day, Elizabeth II reigns over the Channel Islands as Duke, not as Queen.
