Van Halen 1984
Coldplay Parachutes
February 7th, 2022 at 7:57 PM ^
People like to (rightfully) make fun of Coldplay but Parachutes is a fantastic album. I'd put A Rush of Blood to the head up there too
My list off the top of my heads:
Rilo Kiley - The Execution of All Things
Florence + the Machine - Lungs
At the Drive-In - in/casino/out
Motion City Soundtrack - Commit This to Memory
Electric Light Orchestra - Out of the Blue
February 7th, 2022 at 8:16 PM ^
+1 for Motion City Soundtrack. I just went through a time warp to 2004
February 7th, 2022 at 8:41 PM ^
same +1 - some excellent rock/pop-punk albums dropped around the early to mid-2000's.
Motion City Soundtrack happen to be doing "Commit This to Memory" anniversary tour - Detroit on June 12 for those of you still in-state - link - tempted to check out the July show in Denver myself..

You must have had time to think about this while sequestered in Memphis.
Springsteen - Born to Run
Pearl Jam - 10
Robert Plant - Now and Zen
The Killers - Hot Fuss
February 7th, 2022 at 4:49 PM ^
I was but luckily for me I had a Constructive Summer
February 7th, 2022 at 4:52 PM ^
Hot Fuss was one of the first that came to my mind too
February 7th, 2022 at 5:30 PM ^
Well, at least you are in an era I recognize.
Anything Duane Allman participated in. Allman Brothers, obviously. Also, Delaney and Bonnie, Boz Scaggs, Derek and the Dominos, Wilson Pickett. Check out his work on Pickett's version of Hey Jude. Greatest guitar player of his era. I realize the competition was fierce but...Duane was the best.
Best album? Allman Brothers live at the Fillmore East.

Just listened to your best album the other day. Always enjoyable.
February 7th, 2022 at 10:07 PM ^
Stormy Monday.
Which qualifies as any Monday after the Lions play.
February 7th, 2022 at 9:08 PM ^
Saw that Friday night show.
February 7th, 2022 at 5:59 PM ^
PJ 10 is awesome
I’m old school - not a bad song on Boston’s first album.
Pink Floyd has two: Animals and Wish You Were Here
U2 Joshua Tree (Super Deluxe) has both the studio and live versions, making it double perfect.
February 7th, 2022 at 4:49 PM ^
You left off the last sentence of your post...
One of these is actually a real band paired with a real album...can you guess which one?
February 7th, 2022 at 4:50 PM ^
They're all real and they're all fantastic
February 7th, 2022 at 4:51 PM ^
Johnny Cash (At Folsom Prison)
John Prine (John Prine)
Nirvana (MTV unplugged)
Colter Wall (Colter Wall)
February 7th, 2022 at 4:52 PM ^
Haven’t heard much of Colter Wall, but Caroline is great
February 7th, 2022 at 7:10 PM ^
Colter Wall is great, perfect voice/singer.
February 7th, 2022 at 4:52 PM ^
My musical tastes are all over the place, but my favorite all time albums are:
The Clash and London Calling (the Clash)
Kind of Blue (Miles Davis)
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (Wilco)
I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning (Bright Eyes)
Blood on the Tracks (Bob Dylan)
I really enjoy hip hop/rap too, but for me so single album makes the cut, except for maybe Ready to Die by Biggie
February 7th, 2022 at 4:54 PM ^
About 20 years ago Bright Eyes was my favorite band in the world.
I'm a bigger fan of Letting off the happiness or Lifted but I'm wide awake is a beautiful album.
February 7th, 2022 at 4:58 PM ^
Yeah, for me it’s really just that one album of his. I like some of his other songs, but none of his other albums really hit me like that one. He put on an amazing show at the Michigan Theater somewhere around 2005 or 2006.
February 7th, 2022 at 5:19 PM ^
Bright Eyes reminds me that I had a huge Elliott Smith fixation.
February 7th, 2022 at 5:55 PM ^
+1 for Kind of Blue. Was typing my response, scrolled first, and saw this. Trane's solo on Freddy Freeloader is just...my goodness.
February 7th, 2022 at 10:43 PM ^
As long as we’re talking jazz,
Sonny Rollins-Saxophone Colossus
weather report-stormy weather
Mahavishnu Orchestra-Birds of Fire
As far as classic rock goes,
Grateful Dead-American Beauty and Workingman’s Dead
Rolling Stones-Beggars Banquet
February 7th, 2022 at 4:53 PM ^
The Appleseed Cast - Low Level Owl: Volume I and II
February 7th, 2022 at 4:56 PM ^
Rebecca Black - Friday (Remix)
February 7th, 2022 at 4:56 PM ^
Nirvana - Nevermind
Pearl Jam - Ten
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust...
The Ramones - The Ramones
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Paul Simon - Concert in Central Park
February 7th, 2022 at 5:11 PM ^
From your list, I’d recommend watching the PJ20 Documentary. That’s a great list BTW.
February 7th, 2022 at 5:22 PM ^
Thanks. I've been meaning to watch that but for some reason I just never got around to it.
February 7th, 2022 at 7:25 PM ^
It captures a (not going to say the) lens of the Seattle scene. I never even had heard of Mother Milk Bone. The contributions from Chris Cornell (RIP) provided great insight. It loses my interest by the end, but one of my favorite music documentaries with some awesome old footage. I owned PJ Ten on cassette, CD, and record (likely influenced by the bands, or Eddie’s, stance that records captured the right sound).
Warning: not much controversy in the film, so more of an overview and chronological journey than intimate expression/experience. In some ways, it feels like the band from Almost Famous saying, “just make us look cool”.
February 7th, 2022 at 5:51 PM ^
Really is a nice list. Though I was more Aladdin Sane more than Ziggy Stardust.
February 7th, 2022 at 4:57 PM ^
I have an actual question about this. I think Songs In The Key of Life is an all time top 5 maybe top 3 album. My issue is it has "Isn't She Lovely" on it which for me is an immediate skip. However, the rest of the album is transcendent genius. How do you parse it? This is the micro of the macro which is Speakerboxx/The Love Below. I love Speakerboxx, I think its slept on, but it isn't as vital and brilliant as The Love Below.
These are the things I think about when I used to have traffic to be stuck in
February 7th, 2022 at 5:01 PM ^
IMO (which obviously counts for nothing), I’d say one shitty song on a full double album isn’t enough to take away all time status.
February 7th, 2022 at 5:03 PM ^
Agree, it's an immediate skip. Honestly, I can't think of a single song with prominent harmonica that doesn't fall into the same skip category for me.
February 7th, 2022 at 5:10 PM ^
I guess I wouldn't classify "Isn't She Lovely" as an immediate skip, but I do agree it is the weakest song on the album. But, the fact that a double-length album has only one weak track just goes to show that Stevie Wonder is an incredible musician and artist.
February 7th, 2022 at 5:13 PM ^
I personally think that Innervisions is the best album from Stevie - although it doesn't have any of his all-time hits (edit - forgot about Higher Ground), it's sequenced brilliantly and shows off his skills in a variety of genres while still being incredibly cohesive. I'd also regard What's Going On in a similar vein of mastery - every track just flows so naturally into the next.
February 7th, 2022 at 4:59 PM ^
1. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
2. Stevie Wonder - Songs In the Key of Life
Perfect is a pretty high standard.
February 7th, 2022 at 5:00 PM ^
I think you could have honestly added Goodkid and Damn as well. Kendrick has an incredible hit rate
February 7th, 2022 at 5:07 PM ^
My personal rankings of Kendrick albums is slightly different from the consensus that I have encountered in the mainstream hip-hop fanbase.
1. To Pimp a Butterfly
2. Section.80
3. good kid, maad city
4. untitled unmastered.
5. Damn
6. The Black Panther album
February 7th, 2022 at 5:10 PM ^
if he just kept future off the soundtrack it would have improved it so much for me
February 7th, 2022 at 5:15 PM ^
Stevie had an unbelievable streak with albums!
February 7th, 2022 at 5:00 PM ^
Suffer: Bad Religion
Hello Rockview: Less than Jake
Let's Face It: Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Punk in Drublic: NOFX
...And Out Come the Wolves: Rancid
Dancing with the Curse: Get Dead
Just One More: Mad Caddies
Drunken Lullabies: Flogging Molly
Ballads from the Revolution: Good Riddance
True Brew: Millencolin
February 7th, 2022 at 5:04 PM ^
I like your style
February 7th, 2022 at 5:00 PM ^
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV
Metallica - Master of Puppets
U2 - Achtung Baby
February 7th, 2022 at 5:58 PM ^
Ride the Lightening is my favorite Metallica album. I equate it to the ‘27 Yankees. For Whom the Bell Tolls is Ruth and Fade to Black is Gehrig, but the whole lineup is strong.
February 7th, 2022 at 5:01 PM ^
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Exit Stage Left - Rush
Eat a Peach - Allman Brothers
February 7th, 2022 at 5:01 PM ^
The Clash - London Calling
February 7th, 2022 at 5:03 PM ^
At my age, I may have heard of these bands, but I can't remember right now. Nevertheless, best live albums ever recorded were Live at the Fillmore East by the Allman Brothers and Little Feat's Waiting for Columbus. If you prefer "shit-kicking", anything by Patsy Cline or Johnny Cash. "Shit-smoking", a varied menu by the Stones, Clapton, or Dylan. What do I know? I'm still looking for the Air Aces on WABX.
February 7th, 2022 at 5:39 PM ^
Jerry Lubin. Was always listening to him.
February 7th, 2022 at 5:03 PM ^
1) Radiohead - OK Computer
2) Fleetwood Mac - Rumors
3) Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
4) Def Leppard - Hysteria
5) Pink Floyd - The Wall
Bonus: love Blind Pilot
Nuetral Milk, amazing!
