OT: A Tradition Unlike Any Other - Bruce Feldman Knows Greg Schiano's Agent, Guys

Submitted by State Street on

With Oregon's Hire of Willie Taggart, a yearly tradition has come to pass: Bruce Feldman insinuating Greg Schiano is a candidate for a job (in this case, Oregon) that he never seemed to be in serious consideration for.  We all saw this year's tweet:

Another name to keep an eye on for the #Oregon HC vacancy I'm told is #OhioState DC Greg Schiano. Will have more in my story in a few min.

— Bruce Feldman (@BruceFeldmanCFB) November 30, 2016

Previous years' gems included Schiano being a candidate for such jobs as:

Miami - http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/miami-hurricanes-butch-davis-greg-schiano-dan-mullen-mark-richt-coach-search-120115

Pitt - http://www.app.com/story/sports/college/rutgers/2014/12/18/greg-schiano-answer-pittsburgh-search-football-coach-athletic-director/20574695/

South Carolina - http://www.thestate.com/sports/college/university-of-south-carolina/usc-football/article47808365.html

And I'm sure I'm missing a bunch more.  This has become something of a frequent occurrance.  Which begs the question, what kind of photos of Bruce Feldman does Schiano possess?

I hope Schiano stays at OSU. Rumors have been circulating that if he leaves, Charlie Strong would take the DC there and wait it out til he could land another P5 head coaching job.

His defenses under Meyer at Florida were terrifying.

Once GMatt arrived, Strong was promoted to Assoc. HC and split the DC duties with Mattison.

Before Strong got to Florida, he had some pretty impressive defenses at South Carolina which was unheard of at the time.

I have no idea what the hell happened at Texas.

He was apparently scarred by his year as interim coach. Plus he is from Columbus and has been at OSU since he was eighteen more or less. It's probably a lot more appealing to stay where he is than to take a job in the MAC. Cincinnati is something of a step up from a Bowling Green/Akron time job and therefore more appealing

I wonder if he'd want to go back to Tampa and coach at USF... Then again if I'm them. I'm calling Mr. Strong ASAP!!! Fleck as well, but Strong has rings in the state...would be an awesome fit.

Cincinnati should be throwing all of their money at Miles and Fleck. USF should be throwing all of their money at Strong and Fleck. Temple should be throwing all of their money at Greg Schiano. IMO, those are ALL great fits.

With bonuses, he was getting $2.2 million. I think there's a ceiling for what they should pay. $3.5 million and up is more than a lot of Power 5 jobs pays and very close to most of the ones above them.  There isn't much return unless they can move up to a Power 5 conference. Maybe Cincinnati and Houston will hire with that possibility still in mind.

I can't speak to the other rumored jobs you allude to, but it has been confirmed that Oregon interviewed Schiano, so it's disingenuous just to fit your narrative to suggest that that was all smoke and he was not a serious candidate.  In fact there were only two confirmed interviews at all, Schiano and Taggart.

Schiano was a consistent winner at Rutgers and was making headway with locking down New Jersey recruits before he took the job in Tampa. His failure there was pretty much the fact that he acted like a college coach, which NFL players resent. I'm not sure why it's so impossible to believe that Greg Schiano would be a candidate in several schools searches. Not everyone interviewed is the top choice.

which is very good at the college level, and his recent job opportunities. He spent two years out of coaching, now one season as co-DC at OSU. That's not a bad job, but it pays about half of what an SEC DC gets. Something doesn't quite add up. Maybe he's terrible at interviews. I would have expected him to have gotten some HC offers for 2015 and 2016.
