OT - Former Dirty MSU Hockey Player's Pro Career May Be Over

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

Saw this on the MGoBlog twitter and thought it was worth a post.

Andrew Conboy of the Elmira Jackals (ECHL) was released after receiving a 20-game suspension for deliberately trying to injure an opponent.

This is apparently a reoccuring theme for Conboy, which dates back to his (brief) college career. Back in early 2009, Conboy -- a MSU freshman -- helped Corey Tropp to attack Michigan defenseman Steve Kampfer after a clean hit on Tropp. Conboy was suspended for the rest of the season and quit soon after.

I was not a Michigan fan back in 2009, but I can only imagine how furious Michigan fans must have been about the incident. There is no place for that kind of violence in sports. Unfortunately, some players just don't understand that, which ends up making already dangerous sports even more dangerous.

EDIT: DId not realize how big of a moment the attack was in Michigan sports history. I got angry just reading all your comments. FYS.

This is why I have been so adamant that Sparty needs to be crushed and put back in their place.  It's why I detest them far more than OSU.  Every team at MSU is taught to hate Michigan.  Hockey and football players have been trying to deliberately injure Michigan players since what seems like forever.

To me, OSU is a respected rival.  MSU is just a bunch of criminals who define themselves by their hatred of Michigan.  I have felt that way for at least thirty years.  I don't think it's going to change any time soon.

FYS, indeed.

I don't care if it was 6 years ago or 100 years ago.  One of the best Bo stories is from the documentary Tiebreaker that was run on BTN.  When we got screwed in '73 after the other schools voted against us Bo would tell future Michigan teams, "Ok, we're playing Illinois today. We gotta stick it to these guys because they screwed us in the vote 10 years ago!"  Ok, those weren't the exact words, but the point is FUCK THAT.  Wolverines have been known to kill bears when they get cornered.  You are either with us or against us.  I'm tired of getting pushed around and I'm pretty hyped to see us get back to imposing our will on other teams.  I won't ever forget how great 1997 was and I won't ever forget the pain and frustration of going 3-9 in 2008 and having our streaks snapped.  So yeah, I don't give a shit if it was 100 years ago, bitch, you ain't getting off cheap!  Go Blue!!!

Kampfer had recently suffered a skull fracture, missing a significant number of games. The players knew, and were deliberately attempting to seriously injure him. My blood boils when I hear Tropp's name.

Is it was one of the very first games Kampfer was back after the Mike Milano bodyslam incident so everyone knew he was fragile. To see him lying motionless on the ice with 2 Spartans standing over him was about enough for people to start climbing over the boards. I remain a little mad that Mitera (I think that's who is in there first) didn't f*cking clock one of those guys

If Yost had the big screen with repay capabilites back then, it would've gotten rreeeeall ugly fast. Like cancel the game ugly.

Looking up his ECHL stats he's been with four teams in the last four years, this is his second time being waived and he peaked on games played two years ago.

He apparently goes out of his way to prove he's a scumbag at every opportunity and hopefully for the sake of the sport he's done for good.

I took a girl I was briefly seeing at the time to that game.

As much as I tried to contain my fury when the hit happened (right in front of us, as chance would have it), it's no surprise that was the last time we went out.

you should have checked with me first.  having a first date at a Moo U Meechigan hockey game is bad, just bad.  i did the dame thing back in the early 90's.  the game was at JLA.  its the game with the bench clearing brawl.  Steve Shields was a freshman in the nets that game.  the starting state goalie had the night off and was on the bench; he was the first off the bench and went straight at shields.

there wasnt a second date...

meechigan vs msu hockey is NOT  a date night.

Ha, great thing is: he dropped out of MSU, so he doesn't even get that third-rate degree.  Now he's out of minor league hockey.  He's a, what, 24 year old with no skills, no education, a forgettable hockey career, and name that should prevent any Michigan alum from even considering hiring him.  He is life is downhill from here on out.

He'll probably have a few battery charges for run-ins at local dive bars, probably defending a slightly overweight, overtanned, dyed-hair girlfriend.  Then a few domestic assault charges for battering that same chub.

Man that's cheap. I played in college but you gotta have respect for people. Just sad and pathetic. Stuff like that is just dumb and clerly not needed.

I was at Yost when that happened. The rage from the fans nearly blew the roof off of the place. Kampfer's dad was at the game and tried to get into the MSU locker room to fight the two players (at the time, the only thing separating the visitor's locker room from the concourse was a curtain and a few event staff/DPS).

Good.  This is why Spartans are looked down upon by everyone.  That degree is nearly worthless and the only area in whic Spartans are more successful than Wolverines is their ability to spread STDs.  Truly a classless "university" up there in East Lansing.
