OT: Best Jellies and Jams Thread

Submitted by Moleskyn on September 14th, 2021 at 7:19 AM

Good morning. I like jellies and jams. Do you? Let's talk together about our love for various jellies and jams. Here's my ranking:

  1. Strawberry jam
  2. Peach jam
  3. Raspberry jam
  4. Blackberry jam
  5. Grape jelly

What about the rest of you jelly and jam loving degenerates?

Also, I did this because Rob F dared me to...

Rob F, before you nuke this thread and send me to Bolivia for my crimes, please consider a couple things:

  1. Would this thread have happened without your instigating comment?
  2. Is it not a great thing to have this thread anyway?
  3. What is your jelly/jam power ranking??

Jam up and jelly tight, 'Moleskyn'!

I hereby preserve(s) your status on the MGoBoard as an esteemed fan of the Detroit Tigers and U of M sports, and would never send you to Bolivia (the land of dry toast) for this minor infraction that I instigated.

My favorites include but are not limited to : Orange Marmalade, Peach Preserves, and the mighty Thimbleberry Jam (one of the 7 Wonders of the U.P.).

Even more OT.

In the early 1970s, on one of our first dates, my wife to be actually asked me what my favorite song was. (I had just embarrassingly admitted to liking MacArthur Park.)  Having no credible response, I retorted "Jam up and Jelly Tight."  Broke her up...I knew I was in love.  Bless Tommy Roe.

It's a good thing.  Mgobloggers are able to walk and chew gum.

I've been making my own jams, jellies and syrups for about a decade.  I pissed off my wife when I made a few suggestions that she didn't like and I was told if I didn't like her method, do it myself.  I foolishly accepted the challenge.  The biggest problem I face is finding really tasty fruit.  Not all fruit is the same.

My favorites in order, and we often do blends of more than one fruit and add spices:

1. Blueberry

2. Strawberry

3. Blackberry

4. Raspberry

Controversial pick: garlic and onion jam. Put it on burgers and it’s *chefs kiss*

Also like a bourbon bacon jam.

But perhaps these are technically relishes instead of jams?

I'm betting you keep a couple pieces of your favorite candy in a pocket just in case, right?  No sense in not being prepared if things start to slow down...  If so, replace that with a jam of your choice.  Win!!

(Seriously - my dad was diabetic and often needed the sugar; also, I've had two co-workers go down due to lack of sugar.  Poured a coke down both to perk them back up before EMS arrived.  Shit is serious...)

Red raspberry is my favorite.  Growing up we'd pick black raspberries at the golf course to make jam.

Since we are on topic I'd like to give a shout out to the Jam Pot in Eagle Harbor, MI.

Jam Pot is legit.

I also was happy to be able to get Michigan made jams from Stover's in Berrien Springs mailed to be for $5 a jar (the same as the fundraisers my kids used to do) all the way to Kentucky. (Local jams here are a little suss.) EDIT: they've raised the price to $6 a jar... but they do have Blackberry and Raspberry jams that include seeds!

Strawberry is the best and grape should not even get ranked.

Your list is also missing blueberry jam and marmalades. Not sure what's going on with that.

Cloudberry jam is my vote for best specialty jam. (Might be carried by an IKEA near you, but otherwise you're probably not getting it stateside.)

Raspberry-jalapeño jam rules the land of toast.  Also good on sliced pork tenderloin.  My wife makes the onion jam cited above, and it rocks on savory foods.

I am a huge fan of whatever is at the bottom of the Publix yogurt blueberry fruit on the bottom.  I am pretty sure it is a blueberry-like substance and it is worth having to eat your way down there.  TWSS I know.

If that's the case, then I guess you can call me a closet terrorist.

I eat about half or more of the yogurt off the top, it has already absorbed some of the fruit flavor and serves as the appetizer to the bottom half of the yogurt, which I then mix with the fruit for a taste explosion ?? ?
